HDR in Iray dome and Terradome 3 question

pkappeteinpkappetein Posts: 506

ok,  I figure out, that  there is a dome in the Iray tab,  and I can change the images for HDR ones,  to get lightening.

When I render by default, everything looks fine,  but If I want to dim the scene like inside a house, how do I do that?
I tried playing with the settings from Iray, and it's making the scene outside dark,  but the inside seems to be staying the same.
Are there other tricks for that?
Also,  when I use those image, I don't see a dome, only when I render I will see the background etc..  are you able to make that visible ?

2nd.  If I use the Terradome 3  one,   can I use it also without the ground?  so I just get the skies etc?   Seems like I always get the ground with it, and messing up my
building etc.   or are there some good guides for that one as well?

Thank you

To see the HDR you need to have your viewport set to Iray -  (You can also use Aux view from Windows/Panes)

For Terradome if you only want to use the sky then you can just load the sky without the rest of the TerraDome stuff although when I did this I see  that the HDR also has lots of ground showing but perhaps your geometry will hide it or you can move your camera angle if it doesn't look right for you.

  • The Terradome skies are just regular Iray HDRIs, they aren't tied to Terradome specifically.

  • Aah cool..

    Thank you

Just bought all those other sales..  so got something to play with. Now figuring out if I can dim  inside a house the light  when those HDR (Dome) type thingies..  (sorry for the odd names lol)
Turning down some settings makes the sky etc dark,  but inside the house,  it stays bright... which puzzles me lol.

With the Environment dome on, an inside room should be virtually dark. If the room is lighter then are are likely some lights in the room that need to be reduced. it would really help if you could attach an example.

Well, it's this file.  I just  use the HDR from Iray.  I can't seem to make it darker inside the house , I can make is outside dark,  but that doesn't help for the inside..

Do you have the camera headlight on?

  • No.

How is the interior lit? If you are using emissive planes and theya re adding more than the dome then adjusting the doem will have little effect. What happens if you turn the dome off completely (Render Settings Editor tab set Environment mode to Scene Only)?

Looking at the scene (but not properly loaded, I didn't want to install the missing stuff) you do have the headlamp set to on as there didn't appear to be any lights and the headlamp is set to be on in the absence of lights (emissive surfaces aren't counted as lights for this purpose).

  • Oh. I thought it was off..  unless it got turned on, once I removed the old dome and lights.

So basically i have no lights inside.. just the one from the HDR outside..   I was assuming that if that get's darker, that things inside would get darker too?

Unless I miss understood that concept.

  • Adjusting the HDR won't affect scene lights - actual lights, emissive surfaces, and the camera headlamp.

  • Oh,  I did not know what.  I thought that everything in the scene would be affected to the light that's coming through the windows etc..

Guess I am really a noob then for this..  i need to hire a trainer

    Hi pkappetein,

if you're serious about the trainer, please send me a note.

I think you still have the camera headlamp on. There are two places to turn off the headlamp. To be sure it's off, I typically check both. First is Render Settings>General> Auto Headlamp> Never. This setting is pretty reliable and will stay set if you adjust you Save settings and new scene settings in Preferences.

    You also have the Parameters>Camera>Headlamp>Off

I've attached several quick renders. You can see the effect of varying Env strength, ONCE the headlamp is OFF.

    test render env 1.0.png
    997 x 560 - 2M
    test render env .5.png
    997 x 560 - 1M
    test render env .25.png

    test render env .1.png

  • Hmm.  I know iturned the one of for the camera.  and the scane on the screen was dark.   until i render it,  then it always stayed the same light.

I need to check this one: Render Settings>General> Auto Headlamp> Never

I played with the 4 dome settings for Iray.   and seems like all of them  showed the light,  but through the window it was just grey.

The only one that showed the scene was  "Sun/Sky"  setting.    Not sure why  Dome and Scene  isn't showing the sky etc..
