Genesis, Poser & Vue

I've been unable to experiment with Genesis as I'm stuck with Poser 8 for the time being. (My Poser 2010 was stolen and helping me replace the software wasn't high on SmithMicro's list.) So I'm figuring at some point I'll have to spend big bucks to get the latest version. But that's not a priority right now.

I am wondering how many people are having any kind of success with DSON. Is the functionality fairly smooth? I've only been hearing from people who haven't been able to get it to work. Also, is anyone exporting Genesis to Vue? It's my render engine of choice and if I can only create Genesis scenes in Poser alone it would certainly help me decide how much I want to invest in the figure. I've actually had to fight to not take advantage of the bundle sales DAZ offered recently because I can't be sure that Genesis will be of any use to me in the near future.

Thanks in advance.

    Sorry to hear that!

All I can say is-that it is very slooooowwwww in Poser. I just posted an example where it took 18 minutes to transfer active morphs to a set of clothing for one figure. I had a single Genesis figure- and a set of clothing that I wanted to put on the character. The script "projects" the POSSIBLE effect of EVERY Genesis morph-on every piece of clothing. So it can take quite a long time when it is calculating the effect of irrelevant morphs such as EyeSize on a pair of boots!
Bottom Line: It works. Needs vast improvement in speed-in my opinion. I think the ball may be in SM's court right now. A faster script with some way to deselect irrelevant morphs would help tremendously! For example- for Alruna Armor- just projecting upper body morphs
on the chest plate-would save much time. But it will project EVERY morph- eyelash length for example-and it will do that for all eight pieces of armor-hence the 18 minute time.
Blending various character morphs does work well

Poser: Genesis:Vue. Is currently being worked on.
I have VueINF 11- and the latest Beta does import-but there are still many issues.

Genesis should work ok with SkinVue if you use Gen4 mapping as that's the part it messes around with. I'm hoping it will be updated, or an add-on provided for Genesis mapping eventually.

    I haven't used DSON.

I have a kind of goofy workflow that I'm experimenting with between DS and Poser --it's fast and doesn't require the items to be DSON compatible, but it has some oddities. And the figure doesn't make it all the way over to Vue with the clothing conformed but here's what I've been doing (since I like both DS and Poser this is what works best for me - if you hate DS, don't try this :))

    1. Set up your figure in DS and conform or parent everything.
    2. Save that as a scene.
    3. Go to content library/my library/scenes (or wherever you save scenes in your library) and select the scene
    4. Right-click on content library and choose "create poser companion files."
    5. Tell it just to do the selected item, and to create it as a CR2 - this will create a CR2 reference script with Genesis plus all the conformed items in it
    6. Browse to the new CR2 over on the poser side of the shop
    7. Load it into your poser scene. You can re-pose, change materials, etc. I am having some elbow trouble with a couple of genesis characters but I think that's because scaling doesn't come across quite right.

Unfortunately when I bring it into Vue the clothes lose their morphs, so they don't fit any more...I'm trying a couple of ideas for that. I'm also trying to get the materials to come over properly--I suspect this is a problem with my library location for Vue. If I figure it out I'll post.

These three pics show genesis in DS, the settings I used to create the companion file, and genesis in Poser (the one with the backdrop) with her elbow "busted." Next steps in the next comment!

I switched from my assorted-dials-spun character to a straight V5 with a different face, and there is less of an elbow problem but it's still weird. V5 is a scaled character so that may have something to do with it? Anyway, changing the pose and shape back in DS means having to re-save the DS scene file but I did not have to recreate the companion file, since it's a script that calls the DUF file, basically.

Here's V5 in Poser, first as a straight import and then with some parrotdolphin materials applied to the shirt, and Syyd's Oxygen character applied to Genesis - these are Poser MC6 mats applied from inside poser after import. The last pic is what happens in Vue 10 when I merge the poser file in - the pokethru happens no matter whether I say to keep it poseable or not, and the all-white mats & completely transparent hair happen even when it prompts me for texture locations and I tell it where to find 'em. On the other hand, the weird elbow seems to be fixed. So, I'm still working on that since Vue is my preferred renderer too.

    Hi Canary
Are you importing from Poser as an obj file? What format are you using to import into Vue?

I'm saving the scene in poser as a pz3 and importing that to vue.

And it loads Genesis? How interesting!

I'm using Genesis and DSON in Poser Pro 2012, in my experience Transfer Active Morphs only takes a second or two

It loads genesis in vue, but without the clothing morphs and the textures, so I use obj export to get genesis into vue, currently--it exports normally from poser, same as a native figure.

Oh, and transfer active morphs is fast for me, too, but I have a fast machine so can't really say what's normal. However, one thing to keep in mind with genesis is that it loads morphs as you use them, so if you have a long session of playing around with dials, it'll potentially evaluate all of the morphs you've touched even if you set them back to zero. So it's probably faster with a ”fresh" genesis.

Thank you all! It's quite helpful.

I'm thinking for now I'll just hold off my desire to build a Genesis library until I can see what I'd be getting into. It was really hard to not take advantage of the recent discounts on the M5 and V5 bundles. I was almost like old times here! ;)

@canary: That's an excellent workflow solution but I don't use Studio. And I have really no desire to add another step to my procedure. It's why I haven't used Genesis before now. But thank you for your detail! :)

You don't need to use studio with Genesis, as long as you use stuff that's already DSON formatted, but yeah, that's less fun than having a giant runtime already full of goodies to turn to. I still use my older figures quite a bit because of that.

    Interesting,

I have Vue 10 Studio but haven't touched it at all. PP2012 and DSON came along and now I've got DS back again. It's always been my aim to master characters and outfits and then import them into Vue. I never seem to get to the Vue stage as something else comes along that keeps me back in the mastering stage with the characters.

    I'll get there one day!

    CHEERS!

Hi,I have been exporting into vue as objs for a long time.I'm not sure if you are wanting to move your models as you can with poser inside Vue...I just take them in with their maps ,export as obj and mostly they work really well.I love the atmosphere in Vue.In this Image I made the background shape in sketchup and converted it into a vue file to import it into vue.
