Gtx 980ti or gtx 1070 iray fast

hi guys

Which of the two cards is more fast in iray rendering??

thanksss

1070 should be; it has more RAM too, so massive amounts faster when the RAM is enough on the 1070 but not the 980ti

    @nicstt  "1070 should be"

Are you positive? 980ti has substantially more CUDA cores. I'm not sure how much difference the architecture or clock speed makes.

I suppose a better question is: Can you find a 980ti for less money than a 1070?

You can't really make that comparison between different generations of NVidia cards. The 10-series cards are more efficient, so even if the number of CUDA cores is less, it's likely to render faster.

To be honest, though, there's just so many factors that can affect render speed. There's memory type (some older cards still use DDR3 VRAM while newer ones use the faster DDR5), clock speed, card drivers, how well the card integrates with the rest of the computer (especially the motherboard slots), and so on.

Acfording to this site ( http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php ) performance of the 1070 is slightly better than the 980 but not much.  1070 is ranged 5th of of their sample of over 1,000 cards, 980 is 8th.   The difference between them in the particular benchmark is really nothing.  But benchmarks are tricky things, there are usually many different ones and the can give different results so your mileage may vary. That said, given how close they are you are probably safe buying whichever is cheaper.

  • then at the same price as you pick it up?

I'm well aware of all of that. Thus my question. I haven't seen any actual tests head to head of the various generations. In this case the discussion included a 980ti, which is a pretty solid card, and the 1070, which doesn't occupy the same tier in the Nvidia hierarchy .

The question was about the 980ti and the 1070. According to the site you linked, the 980ti outperformed the 1070.

  • I think 980ti should be better in terms of performance, but has less memory, hotter and takes more power. If you are planning to render not too big scenes a lot, and to change the card in the near future (in, maybe, year or two), then, perhaps, 980ti is better for you. For long term usage bigger amount of memory (cause of growing size of modern content) and better reliability (cause of less heat) would be better, IMO.

and there is a reasonable chance that the 10 series cards will get better in comparison to the 9 series. Rendering is still very recent.

Personally, I would wait a while yet. I plan on doing.

Max temp is lower on the 980ti than the 1070. Don't know how they compare in actual use. My 980ti overclocks to 1300Mhz, but stays at 80C during the render. Less power usage is always better. But the OP's question was which was faster.

True. i would expect a 1080ti to be pretty special.

On my system, the 980ti and the 1080 perform very close to identically - so the 1070 would be a bit slower than a 980ti. But it has a lower power requirement.

Definitely the 980 Ti... a better comparison might be between the 1080 and 980 Ti. That would likely be a closer race.

As for test sites, keep in mind that 99% of reviews only test GPUs for gaming.... CUDA rendering is a completely different animal....

There are very few reviews that actually test GPUs for rendering.... very very few.

A good starting point, is taking a look at the Octane benchmark results, since they show how each GPU's stack up against each other for pure GPU rendering. (note, for Octane, 10xx series is not listed yet).
