Dynamic Clothing causing Daz 4.9 pro to crash when loading

I have always loved using dynamic clothing as it looks so much more natural but I can't even get a piece of clothing loaded onto a figure without having Daz crash.  Kind of defeats the purpose of having the dynamic plugin. So far the only piece of clothing that it will load is the maids dress and then the drape really sucks no matter how simple the pose.  I really love the century nightgown but that isn't even an option as Daz crashes upon trying to load it. Are there others here that are having the same problems and am I just out of luck with dynamic clothing from now on?  If so, back to Poser I go.  I've even tried deleting the dynamic clothing that I have in my content libraries and then redownloaded them in hopes that there might have been some kind of updates that I had missed. Hopefully there is a fix out there somewhere.

At what stage does it crash, and what is your viewport drawstyle?

  • It crashes whenever I try to load the clothing on the model. Drawstyle is texture shaded. Can't even get a good start due to the fact that the clothing causes crashes. Only just one model in scene and nothing else just as I have always done things.

  • Deleting/reinstalling the dynamic clothes is the wrong end of the problem — you should be looking at the dynamic plugin. Have you updated to the new version of DAZ|Studio? And have you also updated to the new version of the dynamics plugin? These are always updated together, and you must have matching versions (the last two numbers of the version number will be the same), or else Weird Stuff™ happens. Usually the dynamics system just doesn't work, but sometimes more drastic things happen.

  • But does it crash while the progress bar is stil going, and if so how far did it get? Or does it crash after the progress bar closes?

  • I have the latest build of both daz and the plugin but just in case I uninstalled and then reinstalled.

As for the crash, generally it happens befor the progress bar even comes up.  If it does come up on the rare occassions it doesn't get past 0 %. As I said in a prior post, I have been able to get the maids dress to load and even tried a sim but the cloth comes apart, not a good look.  I would imagine that I would have had these kinds of problems when I first started with dynamics but I have been using them for years with none of these kinds of problems. For a while the plugin didn't work well with my mac but hadn't had that problem for quite a while. Besides, I am having the same problem on my Windows machine as well.

  • Crashing before the progress bar can even appear would be very early in the process. Is there anything in the log - open it before trying to load the clothing item and when DS crashes you should be able to refresh/reload to see any additions (or you may actually be prompted to get the changed version).

I was having the same problem but then I updated and reloaded everything and it does not crash anymore. It does not work anymore either. The clothing falls through the character no matter what I try. I am hoping a new version will come along that will fix this. It worked fine when I used this before but that has been regrettably a few months ago.

That's a pretty common type of failure when the D|S program and dynamics plugin versions don't match. See my last reply upthread.

Alternatively, did you remember to set the collision list before running the drape? It's easy to forget, especially if you haven't used dynamics for a while.

I was remembering to check everything before renderind but I will go back and check to make sure the versions are synched. Thanks!

  • Don't forget the hidden gotcha in setting up the collision list — the dynamics plugin is easily overloaded, and if you have too many things selected to collide that could never actually collide (e.g. hair with trousers, or parts of a room environment way over on the other side of the scene) the drape might run as you described, as if nothing was selected to collide at all. Be ruthless in pruning that collide list (in many cases you can deselect the head, hands, and feet), but be aware of when you have one dynamic cloth draping over another one.

The Optitex dynamics system is a true and verified pain in the anatomy, but when it works, it looks great.

Thank you spotted kitty. I will go try that in a moment.

  • Anybody successfully use the plug-in with Daz 4.9 and OS X 10.12 Sierra? I am thinking about buying the plug-in but the note on the product page is quite stale:

Note: This has been updated to work with DAZ Studio 4.5 (32 and 64 bit, Mac and Windows.) (There are still known issues with Mac OS 10.7).

The Dynamic Clothing Plugin is still unstable on the Mac.  Dynamic Clothing for V4, G2 & G3 normally works fine but any dynamic cloth item designed to be used with the Genesis range of characters will cause studio to crash.  DAZ & the Vendor are aware of the problem (which started with Daz Studio 4.8) and know what the cause is but so far they have been unable to fix it. Daz Studio 4.7 was the last version when the Dynamic Clothing Plugin worked without any problems
