Restoring my user categories in 4.9

I have been categorizing my content into my own categories for years, and am periodically Exporting User Data to back up the database.  However, luckily, I have never had a reason to actually restore my categories due to a crash or catastrophic destruction of my content.  I would like to know exactly what steps I need to take in case a loss would occur.  The only tutorial I find is Adam's tutorial from 2012:

I am wondering if the method for restoring User Categories has changed or if you still need to work with stopping and restarting the CMS and delete the entire database?

  • To restore from exported user data you just use the same Content DB Maintenance dialogue as for exporting, and then in the next dialogue check only the user data options. Adam's guide is for backing up the database files, for the old Valentina database.

There is some problem with my databse. I experience corruption and issues with it not recognziing new products in product view until I reimport metadata. So I am familar with this process.

What I do is periodically back up all my user datas. I then reset the database, reimport the meta data all of it, then lastly I do user data.

Because I have 7 user data files, it seems to matter that I import them differently. I've noticed order of importation is important. I've found if I just let DAZ reimport user data file at the same time as I reimport the meta data, some categories will be empty. There is some pickiness to studio in the order of importation, and so I usually do recent first.

I'm not sure why I now have 7 user data files, but I cna't afford to reinstall DAZ and start from scracth. My custom cateogries are very involved and have taken me months to have things the way I like that.

To be doublely sure I backup my whole DAZ Folder as well as the folder with CMS. This makes reinstallation much easier, since I also have a ton of custom content I have downloaded elsewhere to reinstall if I have to.

Thank you, Richard and Serene Night.  Much appreciated!

By the way, what is the difference between UserData 1 and UserData PublicBuild 1?

  • PublicBuild is the beta, so presumably that was exported from oen of those. Perhaps the name was made distinct to ensure you didn't damage the data from the relase version if there was a bug.

  • Yes, thank you, Richard.  I think it was an export from while I will still running the earlier version.

I have found it best when restoring user data to only do one at a time. When I restore userdatas all at the same time, folders ace created with empty contents. If I click User data 1 restore it, then wait, and go and do 2, it seems to work better.
