Does iray or 3DL material load automatically?

Potentially silly question! When I load up wardrobe or an enviroment that has both 3DL and iray materials, which loads by default? I've been going in and manually applying the iray materials to be sure, but is this an unnecessary step?

There isn't really any uniform standard, because some products, especially those that came out right around the first release that included Iray.  But that said, in the surface tab, select a single surface and then look at the very top of the listing.  Up in the 'header' it will tell you which base shader is being used.
