Category Problems in Studio 4.5.1.6 Pro
Is anyone else having problems with Categories in 4.5.1.6 Pro? A few weeks ago I found I could not create new categories anymore.
Support suggested de-installing the content manager, deleting the database files and re-installing Studio but this didn't fix it. On my last attempt I de-installed Studio and the content manager, deleted the database and re-installed Studio. I even looked in the windows virtual store to see if there were any Studio 4 or content manager files lurking there. This time I did not migrate my old Studio 3 database and I did not re-import the metadata but it still doesn't work. I created a few categories yesterday, this morning the category folders are there but there are no items in them.
Does anyone know of any files apart from the content manager database directory that might get left behind by the de-installers? Apart from that I'm out of ideas.

Is there a triangle next to Categories as shown below, if not, the CMS is not running.
Yes, the triangle is there.
The categories I creaated are shown in the column to the right, but when I click on one of these categories the content pane underneath is empty. When I created the categories I put items in them and yesterday they were displayed in the content pane. I have tried right-clicking the category and selecting "Refresh" but it still doesn't work.
What OS are you using?
If it is Windows 7 or Vista, there may be permissions problems. Are you running as Admin, and did you install CMS to the default location?
I will give this a go a little later, I don't use Categories normally, but I would have thought if it it was a bug in 4.5.1.6, somebody would have complained by now. Can you create new categories now, and have you tried to do this again since?
I'm using Windows 7 Pro and I'm not logged in as administrator. I used the default installation settings for Studio and Content Manager.
This problem has only happened recently. The annoying thing is that I have spent many hours setting up the categories so I can actually find things and now that is all lost.
I just tried again and I'm getting a similar but not identical problem. I created a sub-category under People called "Victoria 3" but it was displayed as a folder icon with no name. I right clicked it and re-named it, it seemed OK. I then created another sub-folder called "Michael 3". This also appeared with no name, and when the list scrolled down the Victoria 3 folder lost it's name again.
The sub-categores I created yesterday are there with their names, but without their contents.
You don't need to be logged in as Administrator, but you will need to run DS as admin so that it has the permisiion to write to the DB folder.
In Win 7, right click on the icon on the Desktop, and choose Run as Administrator, and see if that helps.
Another suggestion, should running DS as an administrator not work, is to check the CMS log files. I recently had some odd behavior and noticed that the CMS was logging errors there. Resetting the DB from inside Studio cleared up the issue for me, which you've already done, but maybe the logs can shed some light on the issue.
Is it possible that portion of the pane is closed? Does it actually say "None" as in JimmyC's image?
Same with me. I could categorize without any problem before and suddenly from one day to another it is not working anymore.
I select category, apply and after when I check, it is still not categorized. And I didn't make any changes on DS on that days.
And yes, it was 1-2 weeks ago.
And when I save my newly created hair, it doesn't show on thumbnail as hair as it did before. or accessory or materials...even if I categorized and set everything when I saved.
I hope now my problem will solve when I install new version of DS.
This really sounds like a bad index file.
There's a tutorial in my .sig below for "recovering from a corrupt CMS". That's the procedure I suggest you try next.
Thank you!
I tried something...exported my datas and reset Content DB. After import metadata. Now finally categorizing is working again, but I lost many-many categories even if I imported user data either. As I see, now I have less items in smart content tab. Will check later....I hope I didn't loose any important thing.
I lost almost all of Smart Content even if I imported metadata. We really need to download and install those products again?? There was a time when there were separated metadata...I hated that but now it would be so much help to download only metadata again ....
Just an example ... I have Gabi for V5 and it isn't show in smart content. Before I reset CDB it was shown without any problem. It is somehow outdated?
If you run the re-import metadata maintenance process it *should* pull all that back in with no need to reinstall or redownload anything.
I tried many times....without any success....tried to select all, after I selected only in 10 groups, nothing. And because categories didn't work and I didn't see any items in products...I mean there were products lists, but when I clicked on a product, it didn't list the included items. So I thought maybe CMS is corrupt. So I uninstalled, removed manually all database (I already exported my user data) and reinstalled whole DS again. It is automatically installed CMS again and finally it is working now!
Now re-import worked well and I imported your category tree too. So it was solved, but still don't know why CMS stopped to work well. And it was not enough to run it...because it was run in DS, but didn't work.
I was wondering about reinstall something, because I read in a thread that if in Runtime/Support the dsx file is before 2012 September, it should install again. But maybe I misread something. English is not my language.
At least now I have smart content...but my whole day was spent with it :)
Thanks for helping
They standardized the default categories for metadata, so a lot of products with metadata older than 2012 September use non-standard categories. They haven't all been updated yet, however.
but in this case category should created when import metadata...or not?
Yes, the category is created, the old metadata still works, it's just not consistent with the newer standard.
