    Iray or 3Dlight render?

An option in Iray is the use of an emissive shader for the 'laserbeam'. In combination with the bloom filter in the render settings you can get a result as seen in the image (however, bloom effects all lights...)

((edit to add, a real laser wouldn't be this visible, only the particles in the beam and the famous 'red dot' were it hits a surface would be seen....))

  • How about adding a cylinder primitve and make it for example red, half transparent and emiting light in surface settings?

Well, this did get me experimenting again

In this image, the laser-beam is a very narrow/long cilinder, with a separate square at the "end" where the beam hits the wall. The surfaces are light emitters with custom textures applied for luminance and opacity. The beam-length can be adjusted.

As such, no real particles in this "Red Dot" but a simulation of it.....

If there is any interest, I can see if  I can make a downloadable version of this with the textures I made/used (but without the Magnum model of course).

Unless you add atmosphere/smoke, then you would see the laser beam.

  • True but going for the Hollywood effect, for my graphic novel.
