I Can Do Everything But Rig
I've taught myself how to model using zbrush, carrara, wings, hexagon, etc. I am proficient at Photopaint and fairly good with Painter. I can use Daz and Poser. But I still can't get a figure rigged properly. I've rigged figures dozens of times in 2d apps and it is beyond me why it so difficult to get something rigged on a 3d model. I've made hundreds of models I'd love to offer but I can't get them rigged. I wish someone would make a product (if I were still up on my programming skills I'd try it myself) that emulates a joint--- you know, drag an elbow to this point, drag a neck to this point, drag a pelvis over here-- you get the idea. Position the part in 3d space then use a dial to control a zone of influence and shazam. Rigged. If there is something out there that does this, please point me in a direction. (Mixamo is awfully erratic, btw)

There are several packs in the store that are tutorials on how to rig. Here are some.

Is it not possible to copy the rigging from an existing figure onto a figure object in DS? Of course this would not work properly, but I assume it would be a starting point for modification (or would this constitute a potential violation of copyright if you sold the end product?)
Yes you can copy the bones but you can't sell them to my knowledge.
Ah, thanks for the clarification. I kind of thought so even as I wrote down the idea. It makes sense since someone has put a lot of effort in to rigging the working figure. Maybe a PA would be willing to make a generic rigging or two which could be used as a Merchants Resource.
Sickleyield has several product in store that have a template that is used with the transfer utility to add extra bones to clothing. I use them all the time
