How to disconnect

Probably a dumb question, but I have a cabinet, with moving parts.
and I can't delete parts of the cabinet. Seems like they are all connected with Bones / Childs etc.. I tried selecting them all, and have them linked to nothing, but still it deletes the whole cabinet.
What do i need to do, in order to make all the items loose from eachother?

If this is a figure you can click the eye next to the bone name in the Scene pane to hide it, or select all of the bones in the Scene pane and then use the Visible button under Display in the Editor tab of the Parameters pane.
That works, but it will be still included in the rendering correct?
from what I was reading, even though it doesn't show in the rendering, it still renders it as invisible..
That's why i was trying to remove it completely so it speeds up the rendering for that item.
If visibility is turned off in the scene tab, the item is not included in render calculations at all. If the item is made invisible via opacity in the surfaces tab, that's when it's still included in render calculations and slows things down.
