The ad for this weekend's sale features a lovely droid . . . that I don't recognize. What product (or combo of products) is that? Because if I post this on my blogs with "hey, great time to get into 3D"? Somebody's gonna wanna know how to make the droid. :shut:

Somebody asked this in members only http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/14927/
Seems it is probably http://www.daz3d.com/bot-armor
or it might be http://www.daz3d.com/aikobot-2
To me, it doesn't look exactly like either one. But the face looks like a Genesis character to me. Probably a new version of those older sets that hasn't hit the store yet.

Yeah -- looking at those, there's some similarity to the neck and "ears" of Aikobot2, but the elbow and shoulder joints don't look like either of them. Seems like some serious kitbashing went into this. Did DAZ's marketing people really put together a promo intended to draw in new-to-3D customers featuring products that in any practical sense aren't available? :-/
I see no issue with kitbashing for the promo. It showcases what can be done with the product by simply combining it with another or leaving out one part and applying the metallic shaders to the skin instead of a prop. Its very creative if you ask me and a very smart marketing.
Look at the bot armor the way it's shown in this pose product - http://www.daz3d.com/v4-bot-armor-poses
I think the promo is a combo of bot armor and either plain genesis or the supersuit, plus different shaders.
If that's what happened, sure. I could say "That's X, Y, Aikobot2, and DzFire's Real Metals silver shader" -- no problem. Is that what happened? If so, what are the products?!? Because none of the joints from shoulder to thumb are from the V4 Bot-Armor or Aikobot2.
Aikobot 2 has those thumb joints plus the lights inside the knuckles: http://www.daz3d.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/a/i/aikobot-2-3.jpg
Ah, thanks! I didn't spot that in the promos, and I'm not at home to check (I have Aikobot2, not the V4 Bot-Armor though). Any ideas on the shoulder'n'elbow anybody?
Bot Armor says this on the promo page:
"Easily load a whole armor/joint prop set, or load individual parts like one hand and forearm for example. Simply hide or delete smart prop joints to change robot parts to armor. You can even combine the robot figure set with helmet and mask as a stand alone figure. The possibilities for this set are only limited by your imagination."

That upper arm might be from a regular shirt - it's amazing what you can do by using the same shader across multiple figures.
Both bot armor and Aikobot2 have a lot of styling (grill vents/etc) in the arm and forearm segments that is actual geometry, so not easily hidden. Whereas this bot figure has very smooth arms. The hands also look much slimmer than Aikobot2's, to me. The geometry of the cowls from both sets don't lead to easy hiding of items to get the look of the cowl on this bot, either, even with judicious use of the PGE.
Bot Armor led to Aikobot led to Aikobot2. My guess is that this is the next iteration on the product, probably for Genesis. If it was exactly the same as a prior product, even with the flexibility that Genesis brings, I don't think a lot of people would upgrade. Hence why this looks so similar, and yet isn't.
I hope this gets figured out, Is lovely and I could use it myself.
If it's a new, not-yet-released product, that's annoying but not a huge problem -- if I knew for sure then I could say so, at least. What I'm worried about most is that the shoulder'n'elbow joints are hand-painted transparency'n'displacement maps on a figure over an armature like DzFire's Cyborgs, created specifically for this promo and therefor never to be available. That would, IMHO, be deceptive advertising -- it would violate the strongly implied "Buy Our Products And YOU Can Make Art Like THIS" (I've been doing this for almost eight years, and every time I've attempted that I've failed miserably).

That face is V5 and the body looks like hers too.
There is a placeholder in the documentation center for "Bot Genesis"

Could the newsletter be a sneak peek ?
Very, very likely. The geometry is too different to be a simple edit/postwork of the V4/A4 versions. Plus the face doesn't really have that typical V4/A4 style really. (At least in my opinion.)
I wonder if Bot Genesis was meant to be available in the store before that newsletter went out, then. Still, looks like it will be a must-buy set, if that is indeed what it is.
Oooooooooo, helpful, thanks!
.
Hopefully there is a male version as well. =-) I do intend to buy this. I love sci-fi.
If its for Genesis then one size should fit all. From what clothing makers have told me about the basics of modeling for Genesis is that you model the clothing for the base shape and Genesis/DS4 does the rest as far as shaping goes. But like I said, thats the basics. Beyond that Im lost as I dont model yet.

Yes, that's the 'basics'...but if you don't want the 'cling' look, you need to at least make some custom FBMs for some of the shapes...at least Basic Female, V4 & 5 (A and S are good too), Basic Child and now the teens and depending on the item maybe some of the more 'exotic' or 'toon' shapes (troll, Anubis, Jasmine, Hitomi, etc...). And 'hard' items almost always need extensive 'correction morphs' or to be individually made/adjusted for a particular shape, otherwise they will distort. So while there can be 'one size fits all', there are a lot of things that still need to be done the old fashioned way.
...pretty "swiss" chrome there.
Finally, I will have Mercurial for my Shadowrun scenes.

Beyond that Im lost as I dont model yet.As I discovered recently, you do need to make a few allowances for certain morphs, but in general what you said is very true. The tennis outfit I'm working on morphs flawlessly with Genesis now, no matter how big or small I make the character.
I've not found a single published Genesis item which didn't work with all morphs, though I did find a freebie top which had some poke through issues at times.

'Hard' parts...things that are supposed to be rigid and items you don't want to follow the breasts, like the purple V4 bra...need the extra morphs. The auto-generated ones have improved, though.
