So how come his nostrils are illuminated again?

All the lights have shadows turned on. He casts shadows, even his head casts shadows...

Just beware of the atomic sneeze!

    Studio I assume.
    I think making highlight and ambient colours for nostrils black helps.
    or just make the diffuse darker too.

    There's always the old solution of sticking a tiny point light with negative intensity up each nostril.

    (No, really! It does work! Even though it sounds downright ridiculous...)

    Try lowering the Shadow Bias on the lights. To low and you will get dark bands as the mesh shadows itself, but the default is a bit high for portraits and the like.

    As Richard said above...I normally use a Shadow Bias of 0.10

    Oh. Much nicer. And I didn't put dark emitting diodes in his nose. (I'll have to remember that suggestion).
