    Now I found this, I got to say some interesting information. I'm planning to make a webcomic with DS optic (well I will use postwork but it will be recognizable) and hope that I won't be dissed for that, once I put it out there.

    In the moment I'm still building places to use and trying to get my script together. As I don't plan to invest a lot into programs I was thinking of using Gimp for everything, but I wonder If there are cheap or free programs to letter and put panels together out there that make my life easier.

    Mostly a slightly modified Topaz Clean subfilter (which works in Photoshop or free Topaz Studio). It works VERY well in the right lighting and I set up a sort of virtual studio with fixed cameras and lighting for every character render.

    I think Comic Life 3 is really useful for making anything lettered and paneled out of 3d renders. It's $30 after a 30 day demo, which isn't SUPER cheap, but it's INCREDIBLY convenient.

    Yay, Divamakeup! Glad it's useful. I was still trying to wrap my brain around Topaz Studio when I recommended it, after using the Topaz Photoshop plugins for a while. But then suddenly it all clicked and my goodness, it's an incredibly useful free application, with the for-pay filter expansions broken into much cheaper chunks than the original Topaz plugins. I've been stacking it with the Nik filters on my current project and... well... yeah. It's nice.

    (I have not been working on my own VN nearly as much as I should be this week, because I've been playing with a different kind of image-based storytelling. I gotta focus more.... probably.)

    Hey guys, just wanted to share a comparison from when I first started using DAZ for the game's backgrounds vs now. I'm redoing some of the earlier backgrounds because I had no idea how to illuminate the scene and was basically just putting stuff, rendering and then doing A LOT of photoshop.  

    Render comparison

    • Straight out of DAZ, no postwork.
    • The older version was done without any lights and using the default HDRI environment map to light things. The cars are low poly free objects I found in turbosquid (if I remember correctly). I placed them in as is, which is why they look so funky.
    • The new version is lit by one of the iradiance day skies HDRI maps. For the new version, I also changed the surface texture of the cars (using car paint, metal, glass and plastic). I also rendered out an outline with LineRender 9000.

    • This is the day version of the scene with postwork.

    • For the night version, I used the same day render and just did postwork in photoshop (since it's faster than re-rendering everything but in a night scene). If this is something you're interested in (changing from day to night in photoshop) let me know and I can do a tutorial for it :).

  • Looks amazing! The cars definitely needed an upgrade in detail. I like the atmosphere created by the postwork. If it was for my novel, I think I wouldn't mind keeping the first old version, except for the cars.

    I have to say that I am a total noob in using special lighting settings and I never felt like buying anything for that, because I just don't know what would be important or not and I am already spending quite a bit on cloths, hair styles, environments, some props. I am happy I got the ghost light kit now because it makes indoor lights a lot easier to set up. By the way, there's a newer version for that now  https://www.daz3d.com/iray-ghost-light-kit-2 which also includes actual light props (lamps etc).

    Yes! I bought the ghost light kit 2 as soon as it came out! Architectural Lighting Rig for Iray is actually AMAZING for indoor lighting. I just started using it and I'm blown away! It's probably my favorite now. I'd say keep an eye out for that one. I got it for really cheap when it was on sale (with all those stacking discounts) and I didn't think much of it... until I started using it. I'll post some indoor renders I'm redoing to show the difference.

    Ask and you shall receive! I sent all weekend rendering like crazy and adding lights! So here are the results! The following are the renders, no postwork (save adding a photo of buildings outside the windows of the OLD VERSIONS).

    Bathroom Comparison:

    Bedroom Comparison:

    • Same as above, added more lights (Architectural Lighting Rig for Iray --I used it in all the new versions) and changed the textures (used Jepe's BeddingZ for Michael 7 for the bed). Didn't want to add the glow to the TV since I want a version with that turned off, so I decided to add the glow when it's on in postwork.

    Kitchen Comparison:

    • This one is much more subtle, but I wanted to also move the angle.

    Living Room Comparison:

    • Retextured some of the furniture, added the glow to the stairs, added more lights (and actually turned on that spotlight) and changed the angle of the camera. The outside view of the new version I rendered separatedly (Urban Sprawl 3) and just added it to show it behind the window. Unlike the old version, where I grabbed a random photo and added that to the window.

    Reception Office:

    • This one does have postwork done in both. Changed A LOT out of this one. I took out the stairs so I could add sofas (it is a waiting office after all). Changed to a different desk (the front details of the desk are all postwork), but the light looks much more natural.

    I used Poser Pro 2012 back in the day for that lot of renders.  Definitely a lot of older DAZ3D content in there as well.  Some hair geometry was modelled by me using Shade 3D.

    Nice to see some examples of those shaders/lighting put to use. They all look stunning. I am just sticking with my ghost light kit for now. I am admittedly putting quantity over quality. 

    One thing I noticed is that the buildings outside as seen through the windows don't seem to be completely horizontal?

    I have been looking at your videos also and the story seems quite intriguing. The music is very good for setting the mood. I see you have used a well known classical piece of music. Do you have to pay for using that? I read that even if the music was written a long time ago, you would still need to pay the performers(?)

    I have a website now for my novel and I keep a daily blog there https://baetendirk.wixsite.com/7thgoddess. Right now I am building a scene where I try to integrate a coffee shop interior into urban sprawl 3. I obviously want to make it look as if the coffee shop is a normal part of the city block.     Personally I get quickly bored from pretty much every visual novel that I saw so far (including great ones like stein's gate) because I want to have more graphic variety compared to the amount of text. That's why I am trying to make something different. But I can see also that there are several important issues with this, because for example when using software like Daz instead of having everything hand-drawn, you rely on material created by others which is often from a different quality, different building style etc.

    Well, all of the music we're using was purchased through (several different) royalty-free stock music website. Based on their licensing, we can use the stock on commercial proyects (including visual novels --we asked).

    Thanks. I decided to add a simple full black border on the bottom. I think this looks nice because it's similar to the long horizontal border in the middle of the building.

    I have almost 1 GB in my data folder now. Maybe in the end I could have around 6 GB(?) I read that Tyranobuilder doesn't put a limit on file size, only that it will take longer to export your game. I don't know if people have had issues with too large sized novels. I did see that some websites put a limit on your game for uploading.

    The 'Elitists' from East Asia seem to be up-in-arms about it because it's an OELVN and it uses 3d created sprites and photorealistic or macabre line art backgrounds and ZERO anime art...and lots of punk, gothic rock, and industrial rock for the soundtrack. Essentially I'm breaking every rule in the 'visual novel cliche' playbook and it seems to be very polarizing with people.
    I'm a massive fan of the original HP Lovecraft Mythos, along with Hammer Horror, Clive Barker, Colin Wilson, Stephen King, Etc and the 80s films of Stuart Gordon and John Carpenter - and I decided to throw my hat in the ring of creating Visual Novels after falling in love with the Russian VN 'Everlasting Summer', which in itself is an anomaly.
    Arcane City *has* got some really gory, insane stuff going on in it. Then again, Stuart Gordon and John Carpenter being influences kinda gives that away, lol.

I've been working on a visual novel script for a year now and had recently completed it and realized that I needed to make several short stories out of the entire thing (because of it's size). Anyhow...I have just now seen this thread (I have no idea how I overlooked it) but once again thank you for starting it and thank you to all of the contributors to the thread!

    I'm a massive fan of the original HP Lovecraft Mythos, along with Hammer Horror, Clive Barker, Colin Wilson, Stephen King, Etc and the 80s films of Stuart Gordon and John Carpenter - and I decided to throw my hat in the ring of creating Visual Novels after falling in love with the Russian VN 'Everlasting Summer', which in itself is an anomaly.

    See, I prefer a more realistic style too and I wanted to try that with our VN but the rest of the team felt strongly against it, so I ended up with something in between anime and graphic novels style.

    I was wondering why you said that you need to make several short stories because of the size. Is it because the engine can't handle the amount of data?

    I think I might be having a problem with file size myself. I tried to export my game (1 GB) to windows in Tyranobuilder and it doesn't work. It should work because there are published games on steam with up to 2 GB made with Tyranobuilder, so I am not sure why I can't export. It did work on a smaller file before and I can export to browser format normally. There's an alternative method with command prompt but I am so bad with that, that I couldn't make it work even with a guide. I am now considering switching to Ren'Py (also because of other stuff not working properly yet in Tyranobuilder since their latest update) or maybe the soon to be released Visual Novel Maker.

    That's all very interesting. I like Call of Cthulhu because of the unique horror setting combining mystery/monsters and psychology/insanity. I did some play by post role playing with that. There will be some horror elements in my visual novel too but graphically it will probably never be extremely violent. 
    ​I have often been thinking why there are not more novels with 3d sprites. I suppose one reason is that quality will still be less than hand drawn? Maybe with the advance in software we could be seeing more and more 3d ? So for my novel I do almost everything in Daz, which means also the backgrounds. I love the idea of making something with an immersive first person perspective and being able to move around within a 3d environment is great for that. The limited number of environments available for use, is of course an issue. For example I wanted to have a night club with dance floor in my story, and I can only find one in the daz shop. 

    ​Everlasting Summer was the first novel I played (because it was free) and it was also the one sparking my interest in making something. I didn't actually enjoy it a lot, because already after a few screens I started clicking through the story as quickly as possible, but curiosity kept me moving forward until the end.

    ​I am definitely interested in your novel for the story. There are some great graphics too. I am just wondering how the combination of different style in background-characters is going to work out.
