I just reloaded Carrara in Mac 10.11.6 and see nothing...
I guess this should motivate me to move toward Daz studio. NO!
I am officially leaving after almost a decade.
I'm going to blender where the community actually matters. This is sad, because I really loved Carrara. I can only take so much negligence..

also there was an issue some had on Windows 10 needing running in compatibility mode
maybe the Apple users can help out.... at least the screen shot looks like it's on a Mac...

Content ha been installed with the install manager. So who knows!
Let me install this real quick and see what my experience is.
I am installing the following for my test.
Carra 8.5 Pro (Win 64 bit)
Carra 8.5 Pro Native Content
Carra RenderNode 8.5 (Win 64 bit)
Does this line up with the peices you installed?
Well Sir,
I got the same very poor experience on loading Carrara 8.5 Pro the first time. I suspect that the 8.5 Pro Native Content doesn't provide all that much and you need to install the 8.0 Native Content. Going to sort this shortly.
Ok. here's what's up and I do agree that it is a particularly poor user experience. Logic says that if the version of Carrara is 8.5, the content will be appropriately named and that latest version is all you would need. However this is not the case. Go back and install Carrara 8, 8.5 & 8.5 Pro Native content and then your presets will show up. also install the Bryce, Carra & Daz Studio IRay HDRI. I've attached a screenshot of everything I installed through DIM. Carrara now loads with the expected content in the bottom panel.

I don't think the HDRI is needed. But as you said, the Carrara 8 native content is crucial.
To install Carrara, my experience is to EXACTLY follow the directions on this page.

Solved!!!
I uninstalled then only installed Carrara 8.5 Pro. After (seperately) I installed Carrara 8.5 Pro content and now I am good to go!!!

My pleasure and i'm glad it worked out. I've got to get myself educated on Carrara. It is such a robust program for content creation. Literally, all I've ever done with it is to setup scenes from pre-built content and render. Some of those Howie Farkes sets are just amazingly life like!
