It won't add directories on its own (you may be asked if you want to add, if you have a folder selected for one content format but not the other).

  • Somehow with DS 4.12 update I can no longer load some characters and their associated materials through the Content Library pane.  So far have confirmed this with Vicky 7 and Girl 7.  When clicking on the figure icon under Characters, it tells me the associated .duf file "does not exist" even thought when I follow the file location structure its obvious that it is.  I've tried deleting and reloading the products through DIM, reassociating the file link via the right click command it wont make any .duf files available.  The Content Library Characters icon for the asset still shows and the file path is correct in the info card I get when I hover over the icon.  How can I reassociate the product file links to those assets missing it.  TiA...

Check your content library manager settings, the error sounds like the data folder is not in the mapped directory tree.

Thank you for the feedback - I did check these and all is OK.  The error finding the file based on its location is the issue as the duf is in the right location and I can launch Girl 7 from My DAZ Library file folder directly on my Hard Drive.   If it was a preferences error for CLM or CL issue exclusively then my multitude of other figures would give the same error and the Girl 7 morph characters would also not load as they need the "Girl 7.duf" file as well.  It's all simply an inconvenience - just wish there was a simple way to overwrite/correct the asset location script for the shortcut icon in the Content Library pane as this most likely is where the problem lies.  I ws also wondering if anyone else with a Mac had the same issue.  Cheers!

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/367571/what-if-blender-could-seamlessly-render-iray-materials#latest

In this thread, it's mentioned that Nvidia recently open sourced MDL material spec. This is what Iray uses for defining and rendering materials in Daz studio. Theoretically, anyone could write a renderer that replicates Iray's results.

So, might this make using the MDL material specs possible on a Macintosh with non-Nvidia cards? Here's a brief quote from the thread:

I'm wondering if anyone here would be interested in a product that allows Blender Cycles to render Iray materials just like Iray or very close to it. (this is currently not possible. Due to imperfect material conversion, one has to invest a lot of time tweaking Blender materials)

Why would one use Cycles over Iray?

    • Superior performance - the whole scene does not have to fit in VRAM because Cycles supports out of core rendering like Octane renderer
    • More integrated features - Motion blur, composition toolings, more render pass options, etc..

This could be made possible because Nvidia recently open sourced MDL material spec. This is what Iray uses for defining and rendering materials in Daz studio. Theoretically, anyone could write a renderer that replicates Iray's results.

Theoretically that should work if someone implemented that in Cycles, and then using the TeleBlender plugim by mCausal and that really exported the materials for cycles using MDL descriptions.

Ah, good to know. Let's hope for something like this to be done.

  • Yesterday a week after I updated my SSD, I installed Daz and I've been having an error message when opening DS, "A valid PostgradeSQL CMS connection could not be established...". It mentions something about firewall, network and anti virus. But when I check directories (following other topics in this forum) I found that in the folder PostgreSQL CMS the app pgAdmin3 says that it needs to be upgraded.

    • I've tried installing from zero but that did't work
    • Tried to install the beta version I used before due to an error while saving a project, did't work neither
    • I'm unable to login even after following the suggestions to star CMS or stop and star it again
    • Needles to say I can't see anything in Smart Content

If anybody can help me I will appreciate it. Thanks

    I'm running MacOs 10.15.3

Thanks, it worked¡ I did't understand that thing of ownership despite that I read it many times that topic;  but trying and googling about setting me as owner of the folder

Good video and explanation of the feud between Apple and Nvidia, saying why Apple ditched the Nvidia cards.

This tweet was interesting indeed, now I would love to see AMD Pro Render for DS.

OK, I don't get the meaning of that thread above. Just what is it saying? Does this provide some hope for faster, better renders in DAZ Studio, using AMD cards? Would it make use of iRay or what? I'm interested; I just don't get what the tweet means.

It suggests Apple will start to use AMD processors (they just released a 64 Core CPU), that would make rendering with CPU in both 3Delight and Iray much faster, and then, hopefully, someone bold might make the AMD Pro Render accessible from DS.

  • inquireinquire Posts: 2,198

    Thanks for adding some info.

How soon might Apple start to use AMD processors? Is there already an AMD Pro Render app? For the someone to make the AMD Pro Render available from DS, I'm guessing they would have to write a linking app, something like Reality for LuxCore. Is that correct?

  • TotteTotte Posts: 13,971

Blender Cycles has AMD Pro Render already, mCausal is working on a script to render using that, but I think there are more possibilites, worth investigating...

Thanks again for the info. Here's a good video on the AMD 64 Core CPU, as it's compared to Intel's top-of-the-line CPU:

I'm glad to read that I'm not the only person having an issue. I can't open my DUF/scene files anymore since the Catalina update. I tried installing the BETA public version for Daz but nothing changed, I still can't open DUFs.

EDIT: Okay, I got it to work in BETA now, thanks guys! :)

I hope the issue will be able to be resolved in the main program soon.

Strange, it should work in the public beta

Am I understanding this correctly about the AMD 64 Core CPU: If it were placed in a Macintosh, it could be used with DAZ Studio for iRay rendering via the CPU: is this correct? About how fast would the rendering be, verses using an Nvidia GPU?

Also, what about a GPU to accompany the AMD 64 Core CPU: would the GPU have to be anything special?

Regarding the link to the youtube video about the AMD I posted yesterday, it does show some pretty fast rendering using Blender, and not even using all of the cores of the CPU, unless multiple scenes were being rendered at once. Also, it shows playing video games using the CPU, and they seem to play very well. (I wish it had shown 3D rendering using DAZ Studio.)

I hope Apple does decide to make this card an option for the Macintosh Pro, and maybe for other models as well.

  • I have the same PostgreSQL issue. I have tried everything I can find to fix it, including uninstall and reinstall, redownloading, beta download, changing port, changing ownership permissions. Still same problem.

  • My MacBook Pro crashed on me few weeks ago, I was forced to install the Mac Catalina system using my iCloud account as a new user than my pervious adm. username.

I can't open my saved DazStudio's scene document(s).duf that I made from Mac Mojave system on  Mac Catalina system. First time using Catalina system everything was fine until I did the lasted updated.  Opening .duf file to edit my figure turn as blank scene screen. I saved my document(s) on iCloud because I don't have enough space on interal HD.  I installed all the DAZ assents through DIM and DazStudio directly this time. I only manually install third-party charcters and clothing.

I attached the a file I was trying to edit.

Watched this video on the AMD 64 Core. It does include 3D rendering with such apps as Cinema 4D, V-Ray, and Blender. Nothing on DAZ Studio or Poser. It's also on Windows. Couldn't find anything with Mac. Interesting, though. Is there anything out there about testing with the Mac OS, or with DAZ Studio, or with Poser?

It's AMD so it wont accelerate Iray, or Poser 2020 (which will get nVidia RTX support appearantly.

I don't understand. I'm not arguing. You know a lot more than do I. I just don't get it. I can do iRay with my Mac Pro 2013 late edition, in GPU. So, if the AMD 64 core were being used, wouldn't the iRay rendering go faster than it does with my 12 core Intel CPU? Also, I can do either the Firefly or the Superfly rendering in Poser. So, with an AMD 64 core CPU, wouldn't the rendering go faster in Poser? Such renders might not be as fast as they would be with an nVidia GPU card, but wouldn't they be faster than they are on the 12 core Intel CPU?

  • TotteTotte Posts: 13,971

It would, yes, 64 cores chew renders like crazy!
But GPU rendering is even faster, like Iray or AMD PRo render, or Octane wich uses hybrid GPU+CPU.

A very good article by Jason Cross discussing the possibility of Apple using AMD's 64 Core CPU in its iMac Pro and Macintosh Pro, and arguing that Apple should do so: https://www.macworld.com/article/3331849/apple-should-drop-intel-for-amd.html

(Hope it's OK to post this link to an article of opinion and argumentation. I'm interested in the possibility that this may happen.) MacRumors also mentions that there are references in the code for the next version of Catalina to AMD chips, but this may just be for internal testing.

  • I have OS X Lion on a donated Mac Pro a1178 I use as my backup workstation I installed Daz 4.12 but when I try to run it it just crashes instantly. I'm not in a hurry to run out and buy a new Mac as this is simply a backup computer but I'd like to see if I can get Daz to work on it before I decide to rid myself of it or not. Help me out please.
