Assuming you aren't getting a missing file error that sounds as if you switched to Bounding Box preview mode. You can change preview mode using the sphere icon to the left of the camera/view picker at top-right of the viewport, or by using ctrl(Win)/cmd(Mac) plus a number key - 9 for Texture Shaded, 0 for nVidia Iray.

Hi Richard - Sorry to come back to you so quickly but I'm still in a fix.  I have managed to recover the correct view of the 'actor' it's no longer a stack of cubes, great. However I am still having issues with the viewport. The problem is only in 'Actors, wardrobe and props' view, in this view my viewport is grey. In all other views ie 'Pose & Animate, Lights & Camera' and 'Render' the viewport is showing normaly in perspective view. Whatever I have tried I have been unable to correct the problem. I do apologise for being such a PITA.

    Have a nice day.

Do you mean you just have an empty grey space, without ther loaded items or the viewport controls in the corner? That sounds as if you have closed the Viewport pane - you can reopen it from Window>Panes(Tabs)>Viewport, then drag it by the top edge of the frame to the top of the gey space until you see a line of highlight colour, and then release - or you can use Window>Workspace>Select Layout to completely reset the workspace.
