Starship/Sci-Fi officer uniforms, Genesis 3

I know that there was a thread about this subject a while back, but I was wondering if we were any closer to get high quality officer uniforms for Genesis 3... or if any 3D clothier has decided to take on the task.
Comments
I haven't heard anything. The focus still seems to be on the usual stuff.
There is HFS officer for genesis 3 Males.
I started the original thread in January. NVent3d seemed interested in the project but no comments in that thread since April 12th (I think to many people wanted to go in too many directions in that thread). The HFS Officer for G3M is okay but still has too much of an armor look for what I was wanting Think uniforms from Startrek (Enterprise era), The Expanse, Battle Star Galatica (2004), Starship Tropers duty uniforms (not MI battle armor), etc. I am looking for Space Navy Duty uniforms. Even modern day Navy Officers and Enlisted Khaki Service uniforms and Work Blues would work. We have plenty of both G3F & G3M battle armor in the store and a few good space pilot uniforms. Just need some good uniforms for starship crews.for G3
Maybe if we keep posting it, one of the artists who make these things will take notice!
Personally, I would love to work in tandem with one. I'm an animator, but I'm not a modeler so I'm kind of at the mercy of others.
Could you guys post some refrences of what type of uniforms you'd like?
Do you model CGI clothing? I'm not a modeler, but I am an animator and content creator... maybe we could collaborate one on one?
standard star trek would be nice, not a body/cat suit, something that looks loose and would be used.
If you do Star Trek PLEASE make some variations so it's not just limited to fan art.
The general vibe, sure, but lwd have mercy - make either Material or Texture(s) choices that allow for original use.
Pretty please. And, of course - either unisex or Male and Female.
Yes, a 'Trek-clone-ish' uniform set would be valuable if there were lots of customizations possible. Insignias, rank markings, service medals, sleeve and shoulder additions, material zones that lend themselves well to other-party fabric shaders, etc., etc.
That's the issue that gives me the most pause. This outfit needs lots of customization options to work not just seprate textures
When it comes to Sci-Fi uniforms, you do tend to have a few kinks to work out. I think there needs to be a happy medium between Star Trek and Babylon 5/BSG. I think there should be the high collars and strong shoulders of the militaristic style, but brighter color options of a more exploratory feel.
Now, the DAZ Library DOES have some pretty good Sci-Fi uniforms... but they are outdated and even with tools to auto-fit to Genesis 3, they still leave a lot to be desired. I think the last halfway decent sci-fi uniform was for Genesis 2 male. It was all right, but it kind of reminded me of low budget British Sci-Fi shows from the 70’s- early 90’s. There was a lot of great idea with Genesis 4. The Space Defenders series was a fantastic jumping off point… but I will come back to that.
I think what people want in Sci-Fi uniforms… What I want in a sci-fi uniform is detail. This isn’t something you can really do with just one outfit fitted over a G3M or G3F. Based on body type, there should be meshes designed for both body types and along all the morphs that come with them. I really like the Interstellar Officer uniform, and am impressed with how it fits on both male and female figures. The downside I’m finding, is that when I apply it to a G3F, since it’s reacting more like a morph than an outfit, it tends to deform if you turn the head or other body parts.
What I really liked about the Space Defenders series was that there were SO many options. The New Adventure Continues series was similar in that, while it didn’t offer much in the way of outfit options, it DID offer a lot in the way of customizable insignias and textures.
Space Defenders, had it been designed for Genesis 3, would have been FANTASTIC, and should probably be used as a baseline reference as far as clothing options. To that end the hypothetical Genesis 3 series should contain the following for both G3M and G3F.
Admiral/High Commander.
Captain
Officer
Security
Medical Doctor
Nurse
Enlisted
Casual
I think all options above Enlisted should have some kind of high collar and squared off shoulders for a more formal look which covers the entire series. I also think there should be a skirt option for G3F, for officers who would prefer a skirt over pants (but can still wear them if they choose). It might even be an interesting novelty (certainly never seen before) to include a utility kilt option for G3M officers. The Utility kilt is kind of a new thing, but it’s never been seen before and it would certainly get people’s attention.
The highest-ranking officer should probably be the most formal… usually represented with an overcoat of some kind. An added option could also be a long skirt with a high slit up the side for a G3F option… formal but elegant.
Captain should be similar to the officer, but with an added little something here, or there to make it stand out… kind of like Captain Picard’s jacket over his grey uniform shirt… not necessarily a jacket LIKE that, but something that sets them apart.
Officers… standard really. Formal high collar… broad shoulders… possibly a hat for added effect (which might require a unique morph for hair… I’m already having issues with the hat helper)
Security officers should stand out and maybe have the least amount of diversity. They should probably look more like soldiers, than officers, but with at least a little bit of formality for coordination sake. They should probably coordinate the most with the enlisted uniform while still being a little bit more formal… sort of a bridge between enlisted and officer.
The Doctor should be sleek… There should be some kind of white element. I always liked Dr. Crushers lab coat (but not its color) as it makes the medical personnel stand out. I think there should be a more formal medical officer for the doctors, while the nurse should coordinate, but maybe be a bit less formal… and there should be options for all genders.
The enlisted should look more like field uniforms. The interstellar patrol series, for both G3M and G3F is AWESOME and is a great reference point, but these should, of course, coordinate with the rest of the series. Possibly having a similar collar to the officers (for ranking purposes) but more subdued shoulders, and more options for weapons.
The Casual uniforms would be a novel idea as well… something an officer could wear out on the town, without being too noticeable. They should coordinate with officer uniforms, but could be as simple as Tee shirts or oxford shirts, coordinating jackets you can mix with casual clothing from other G3 sets. Something that says “I’m off duty, but I am here to help in an emergency”
I think the foot ware should be diverse too. A pair of knee high boots and/or stiletto heels along with combat boots, formal shoes and maybe even casual shoes.
Rank and insignia, along with possible name plates, should probably be simple shapes that can be easily customized via Photoshop bridge. There are way too many options as far as rank location goes so I suppose that is something that would depend on the overall look of the uniform.
Another think I thought was kind of cool with the space defender series was a “sexy” option which bared the mid-drift for female officers. It really diversified the series and gave way to a whole new slew of storyline options for characters who may be wearing it. Of course, a sexy option for G3M wouldn’t go amiss either.
It would also be great if there were options for things like sleeve and pant length… possibly removing the sleeves from some, or allowing the officers to wear shorts… you know, when you might be on a tropic/desert environment. And there should DEFINITELY, without a doubt, be different color options to differentiate divisions. With Star Trek you have, Red= Command, Gold= Operations/Security (switched in TOS) and Blue for Science. This is kind of a given for Sci-Fi, although the new Discovery uniforms deviate from this, differentiating divisions with uniform trim… different for sure… kind of cool.
Below are some links to references, as well as past uniform series that DAZ has done for much older Generations. It may be a good place to get some ideas. The Fantasy uniforms on pinterest may actually be along the lines of what many people are looking for.

Incredible post with a ton of resources. Thanks posting. I'm super inspired by seeing all this.
Great write up Adam! Ty for posting it
I personally don't want uniforms which ape known properties like trek, star wars or other franchise shows. I love those shows, but I like my art not to look like fanart.. There are already several knock-off trek sets for sale in other stores.
I like the idea of different branches. I think the set would be doable as long as texture expansions by others could be made. you really need to only make one set, with the possibility of either the user adding different badges and rank insignias or leaving room for other pa's to make those items.
I honestly think you should "cheat" and the entire set comes as one outfit and "how they wear it" decides their ranking.
For outfit, theres long, tight shorts and a tank top. That's the grunts gear or sleep wear or 'round the barracks'.
Long sleeve tight shirt over that and cargo pants. Stuff with lots of pockets for the grunts and the same pants with no pockets for the officers or ship crew.
Light, short jacket --> same jacket, but longer.---> followed by thicker jacket -longer equals overcoat.
---------------------------------
I'm not big on insignias because that usually leads to post work, but if you have to create a badge, make one big one and the morphs for it, removes parts making it more simplified in design for the lower ranks. Imagine a pizza pie and each slice removed = a lesser rank.
---------------------------------
All variations, like Medic and Infantry and Construction and security or armed soldier etc are done with texture expansion sets.
And if your base models works well enough, that can be outsourced to a bunch of other vendors.
---------------------------------
And I again state, how great it would be to NOT echo the major franchises...and do something original that helps with kit bashing.
I do agree; these uniforms shouldn’t directly be influenced by the major franchises, but I do think they should be used a baseline reference. We know that these uniforms from Star Trek, BSG, Star Wars and B5 work but we should build on them. Think of it like baking a cake; there are certain ingredients you will ALWAYS need; flour, sugar, eggs (cake mix if you aren’t making a scratch cake) etc. After you’ve established which ingredients work, then you start throwing in things that change the flavor a little bit, to make something completely new.
I think the elements that work should be used. I’m fairly confident most of us know what these elements are. Now this should move to something that focuses more on style. The standard sci-fi styles of the 90’s, 00’s and early 10’s are kind of a staple so maybe lets move away from that.
My first though it, lets move to something more retro… art deco. Take the modern elements and blend them with styles that came from the past… Flash Gordon, Metropolis, something that would combine real style with functionality.
My first thoughts would be something more dieselpunk in style. Look to the 30’s-50’s… but with technology and elements that would come from the future. I personally feel that dieselpunk is a freakishly under-utilized subgenre which has a lot to offer. Steampunk has kind of overtaken it as a sub-genre and while I love that athstetic as well, steampunk doesn’t exactly lend itself much to functionality.
If I were a model/clothing building (which I am not, but I do have some character design experience, and animating is my day job) I would take a lot of the style elements from Dieselpunk yet clean it up and marry it with the futuristic textures you see from the established franchises. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow wasn’t exactly a MAJOR blockbuster hit… the story was a little predictable and bland, but it WAS heavy on visuals and style. Angelina Jolie’s uniform in it was amazing… if a little dark. The dark grey’s and blacks work for that character, but you couldn’t really use it in a more general way.
I don’t know if I’ve really seen this style used broadly before. Maybe clean it up a little bit…brighten it… it would sure as hell be something we’ve never seen before in mainstream Sci-Fi TV shows… at least not in a while. I included a few links to reference, and even a few links to architecture which may actually give a broader view to an approach.

Also, should be something that can cross genre, from sci-fi to fantasy, if possible. (see links above for dieselpunk)
Also, it does not have to be one product but can be a product line. :)
My thoughts are, it should be a bundle.
You should start with the base G3M and G3F outfits (and YES! They need to be separate to avoid strange morphing/twisting effects) which would include the uniform and foot ware and MAYBE a hat of some kind, along with all the base textures and texture options (multiple divisions etc.)
Then you add additional separate products… some could be as simple as textures over existing products (such as the Olivia Morphing boots for example) which would not only coordinate with the uniforms, but would save production time, and even create a little goodwill between artists cross promoting products.
To that end, I think the pieces should be separate… shirt/jacket, pants/skirts/dresses, foot ware… all these should be separate to maximize the ability to mix, match and really customize the uniform for individual needs.
Soooo... who in this thread are the actual clothing/model builders?
Oh... and what programs do you like to use to make 3D Clothing
For what it's worth, there's a ton of concept art which has been released for the 'Mass Effect' games, where the artists have clearly had to cull down from a multitude of ideas inspired by various different shows and films. The book of it collected for at least the three first games is fairly cheap on Kindle. There's a lot in it which was never used in the games, but would offer all kinds of artistic springboards to make something from.
The uniforms created for both Alliance and Cerberus personnel would probably be the most applicable.
There is a lot of good stuff here! Maybe combine dieselpunk with Mass Effects?

Looks like we are getting some results!

I had a chat with the artist and they are planning on releasing more in this line over time... I already got it though and so far, it's looking good. I did attatch it to a male figure and it's not bad, but there is some odd wrappin and interpolation you don't get when you apply it to a native figure, but I think the male version will be coming soon!
Not really related, but there is an obvious inaccuracy in the Space Satellite figure. Somewhere on that thing should be text saying 'SpaceX' and 'Dragon'. ;)
A G3-based update to Gorodin's Concord series would be an instant buy. Three or four service brances, multiple dress/duty variations, full range of easily-added badges and insignia. It's sad that the last/only version was for V2/3 and M2... M2? Yikes.

Well, it is a Star Trek knock off but over at Rendo: Trailblazer G3M sci-fi Uniform for Genesis 3
That Admiral costume is far more steampunk than science-fiction. Especially in the leggings, which seem to balloon out in a way more suitable for the Victorian age than modern/futuristic.
yeah but retexturing it drastically changes that... even with the shape of the pants
