I am reinstalling content with DIM and tried to follow Adamr directions on installing with DS open, then run scan known directories for files, but they seem to categoriae themselves there is no Uncategorized folder in the content manager . What do I do to fix it?

I have one, I did a scan for files after I had installed using DIM and it put a ton of stuff in unassigned, which confused me because it seemed to be items that were already categorised, tho i'm not sure as i haven't got my head around using categories yet, tho I am determined too before I start to install all the freebies and the myriad of non-daz content!
This is the one thing I wish DIM would offer an option for that it does not. DIM itself interacts with the CMS and automagically creates metadata just like the DS Import Metadata screen. Here's what *I* do to get around that.
Start DS.
Select Poser Formats on the content library pane.
Start DIM.
STOP the CMS service.
Use DIM to install.
START the CMS service.
Select categories
Scan known directories for files.
Categorize from Unassigned.
Repeat until done installing.
Use Content DB Maintenance to Re-Import Metadata.
I don't see any Unassigned folder in my Content Manager and after I used DIM to Download and install content I never got screen wanting to add/updated the metadata when first launching DAZ3D.
thanks Adam I will try doing that and see what happens...I also posted this in your other post discussing the same problem, as I couldn't find it before I made this post...maybe this could be linked tor merged to the other one so all the info is in one place?
For items that don't come with metadata (not Smart Content), if you do the search with "New Items Only" unchecked they will show up in Unassigned.
so if I install some daz freebies, or other third party content, I make sure that new items only is checked when i choose the scan for new files?
Then I can categorise them?
Hi Adam so I followed your steps andmanaged to find an uncategorizrd folder and moved that into my own folders, kinda made someorrors about where I moved stuff and now want to start over by uninstalling what I did and reset categories. How do I delete the categories \I made so I can import the file you made for the file structure?
Yes.
If it's all outside of Default you can just delete all the top-level categories except default; otherwise, you can reset the database and re-import metadata to get the metadata that came with the products (if you want it).

Hi mike,
so I reset the database and all the catagories I created myself are gone. Do I have to uninstall the items I have already installed to have them show up in uncategorized? So far I have only installed the genesis essentials bubblegum hair and a few lisas botanicals items
@Kharma, I was going to try to answer your question, but Studio then did something unexpected when I went to verify my answer, so now I just have another question to add after yours is answered. Hopefully the answer will help us both though:
When you right-click on a categorized content folder and select Delete from within DAZ Studio, where do it's content thumbnails go? I thought they would move back to Categories > Default > Unassigned, however that doesn't happen. They're just gone. (the runtime is still there in Windows.) deleting and remapping the runtime, reinstalling the content, rescanning for new items, all have no effect.

No, you don't need to uninstall them, just do a search for content.
Are these items that were installed with DIM? Did they have metadata?
None of them were installed with DIM.
The one item I was specifically testing with does not have metadata, and started in Unassigned before being categorized; I'm not sure about the others that were in the same folder as I don't actually remember what they were.
Do you have the "New Items Only" checked?
Yep, that was it. argh! I see I have some other stuff I need to recategorize now too... thanks!
