Is the Content Management Service running?

How do I find out again?

In the Content Library pane, if there's nothing in Products or Categories (even the empty Default categories) then CMS isn't running. In Windows you can start CMS from the Start menu, not sure where the start shortcuts are on a Mac.

    Running PC.

I have tried starting Content Manager but then the categories show up but the items don't.

I have tried running it and then running DAZ and then visa versa with no luck.

Have you tried reimporting metadata? From the Content Library tab, click the menu icon, choose Content DB Maintenance, and then Reimport Metadata.

I suspect that step alone will solve your problem, but in case it's necessary, here was my full process of using DIM and getting Smart Content to work correctly again:

    1. I uninstalled the CMS and DAZ Studio.
    2. I ran all the content uninstallers I had. I left other content alone, including non-DAZ content and the few things I didn’t have uninstallers for.
    3. I reinstalled DS4.5
    3. I ran DIM and installed everything to DIM’s default location. It took less than four hours to download and install 476 items!
    4. I added the new “My DAZ Library” location to mapped directories within the Content Database Manager, accessible through the Active Pane Menu icon on the Content Library pane.
    5. I clicked that icon again and selected “Content Database Management,” then re-imported all metadata and removed orphaned file references

At this point, in Smart Content, I could see a bunch of functional icons and a bunch with those exclamation-point-in-a-yellow-triangle error icons.

    6. I went back to the Content Database Manager and removed the old “My Library” mapped location

Now Smart Content was working fine…but of course, the non-DAZ stuff I had kept was no longer accessible through the Content Library.

    7. I added the old “My Library” location again (in the Content Database Manager).

Now everything seemed right with the world. This is perhaps not the most elegant solution…but it does appear to work, at least for me.

You may have a corrupted CMS database. The quickest way to fix it is to turn off the CMS and then go into the hidden folder ProgramData under the C drive and in the Daz folder you can delete the Content Management folder. When you go to restart the CMS and open up Daz you will find that the CMS has been reset and it should now all show up. I have tried it the other way and it never worked for me but this way has.

Good point, KinnieM...that could be it. AdamR001 has more information on this and what to do about it: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/8028/#105548

Are you using the default install location in DIM, and if so have you added it in DS?

Okay, here's what is happening now.

I have to start the DAZ Content Management Service right before I start DAZ.

Once I do, often it will stop and I Smart Content stops and is no longer available.

Also when Smart Content IS working, about 3rd of my content is not available. The Smart Content Icon is there BUT the icon is blank with a yellow triangle and am exclamation point in it. When I click on the icon, it tells me its not where it should be despite the fact that it shows as installed.
How can I get this back to the way it used to be?

This new installer is becoming a huge pain in the butt. What good is faster if I lose a 3rd of my content and cannot fix it?

I do not want to have to reinstall DAZ 4.5 because I shouldn't have to. Furthermore, I should be able to download items I purchase the old fashioned way if I want.

DAZ... make a product that works before putting it on the market and FORCING us to use it if we want to buy new products.

You can still do it the old way. You do not need to use DIM if you do not wish too.

Sorry to hear you're having so much trouble with this! :( As far as I know, it's not necessary to reinstall DS4.5 itself (assuming you have the current release: 4.5.1.56). However, in your situation, uninstalling CMS and DS4.5 and reinstalling might help to solve the issue with CMS stopping randomly (see here for more information on that: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/16753/). In my case I had an older release, so I wanted to make sure I upgraded before using DIM.

Steps 6 and 7 from my earlier post show one way to get rid of the non-functioning icons, but that's assuming that they are there in addition to functioning ones, rather than in place of them (which sounds like it might be your situation). Smart Content icons for some products have moved...as I recall, I had a lot of non-functioning icons in People and the equivalent functioning icons were in Figures, for instance. So if that's what you are seeing, you could give my method a try. But if you're really missing functioning icons for many of your products, then that method might not work for you. Hopefully some of this is helpful...let us know how you make out.

I suddenly started having this problem this morning. Content in the Categories and Products folders have completely dissapeared, and I can't use search or even make new sub-categories anymore. I should also mention that it actually began acting weird a few days ago, the sub-categories were showing up in random order instead of alphabetical. I tried re-importing the metadata and it did nothing.

Everything was working well with the new DIM for me as well, then for no apparent reason everything in my smart content disappeared along with the categories and products folders. I restarted my pc and my smart content reappeared, then half way through a session it disappeared again. Tried to reinstall meta data, but that doesn't bring it back. Very frustrating.

It sounds like your CMS has stopped. What OS and what security programs are you two using?

    Hi,
Tried stopping and starting the CMS no difference. I'm using win7 with Microsoft Security Essentials.
Be interesting if you can come up with a solution. I was wondering if there is a bug in the DIM as this happened originally after a download and other people seem to be having the same problem connected with the downloader.

    1) See if you have an extra set of CMS databases in ProgramData. If so, with CMS stopped delete the files in ProgramData and then try restarting CMS.

    2) If this isn't the first version of DS4 you've installed, try uninstalling CMS and then reinstalling DS. CMS doesn't get uninstalled when you upgrade DS, so you may have an old version.

    3) I've heard it also helps avoid CMS problems if you frequently "Mark all content as seen".

    Thanks for that.
I sort of followed your instructions

    1) Checked for extra DBs, found none.
    2) Switched off the CMS and then uninstalled.
    3) Re installed Studio without uninstalling in "Programmes and Features", so that Studio uninstalled itself before reinstalling and building a new CMS.
    4) Switched on CMS
    5) Reinstalled starter essentials
    6) Did a reinstall of the DB

Well it worked (so far!) I try not to have any new content markers when adding to database as the blue new sign drives me mad.

Thanks again for your help and speedy replies

Okay... following the instructions I found on this thread

    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/16753/

I stopped CMS and DAZ Studio

I found the folder where my stuff was stored and in the folder ending "... DAZ 3D\Content Management Service\databases” I found these files and deleted them:

    ContentDB.blb
    ContentDB.dat
    ContentDB.ind
    ContentDB.vdb
    and
    master.vdb

I restarted CMS and then DAZ Studio

I then went to Content DB Maintenance and then reimported the metadata.

    Viola.

    Fixed.

Thank you all for your help.
