One factor you don't mention is space and portability... If you want to be able to move the computer around or use it in different locations, the laptop is the only practical choice. An iMac is not real portable... :)
I have an iMac i7, and it's nice. I'd recommend it:
- more memory
- larger screen (maybe the same number of pixels, but the large size makes it easier to see details)
- i7 can give you 8 cores with hyperthreading, although I don't know if DAZ Studio will take advantage of it. I know Carrara does.

The Mac Pro with a QuadCore Xeon is about twice as fast as the iMac with a Quad Core i7.
I've done several tests (not iMac but MacBookPro) and the speed difference is vast when it comes to rendering, and because of one thing and one thing alone, Xeon vs. Core i7.
Xeon is a Server processor where every core is built to run its two hyperthreads at full speed, all the time, where the i7 will throttle down two core to a crawl to avoid catching fire under heavy load. The i7 is better for tasks that are single threaded like most games out there still, but then it comes to parallel tasks like rendering, the Mac Pro will eat the iMac for breakfast.
I have two MacPro (8 and 12 core), a MacMini Core i7, a MacBookPro and even though the new iMac looks fast on paper (some benchmark tests shows promising speed, but they run short enough not to heat the processor so it will auto tune the speed down.
Also, rumors has it Apple will release a new MacPro very soon (as the current will be end of sale in Europe end of Mars because of some lame security rule that if you open the MacPro (it doesn't require a tool to open) there are fans with a diameter > 90mm that are unprotected (you can stop the with a overcooked carrot because they spin slowly) but according to some rules they are considered a danger.
Apple has promised a new MacPro 2013, as the old one has several years , just small CPU upgrades, so if you're about to invest, I'll wait as the new one will most certainly have never Xeons (forgot the model)l.
The MacPro has already been EOLed in Europe (there was a thread on this over at macrumors).
I can't see the MacPro ditching a Xeon for an i7 - that would be an incredible step down in capability - i7s can't run dual CPU.
I ment newer xeons (and it is mars 31 that is the end of sale date, but Apple stopped shipping to retail long ago)
