What I buy....what do you buy...
I was trying to think of my spending patterns and what I like....
I'm likely to buy Genesis, but not likely to buy V4/M4 and previous.
I'm likely to buy M5/V5/Young Teens, but not likely to buy Aiko or the Freak.
I'm likely to buy everyday clothing, but not likely to buy fantasy.
I'm likely to buy a large environment with lots of props, but not likely to buy a lonely street corner with just a mailbox.
I'm likely to buy everyday props, but not likely to buy steampunk.
I'm likely to buy clothing with lots of texture options and morphs, but not likely to buy simpler options.
Just some musings....I find that I like places and things but more common such as maybe a hotel room, gym, warehouse, recreation room, etc. I'm not so much into fantasy but I am working on a big medieval project.
Just curious, how about you?
Comments
For a figure I never use, V4, I've bought way more than enough already but plan to salvage a good part of it through conversion. Not buying no mo v4.
I still like buying for M4 but it's safe 'cause there's precious little new for him anyway.
I like buying almost anything for Genesis no matter which Genesis subset it's for. Most everything fits everyone amazingly well. Plan to continue.
I like buying animals. Will continue to do so.
I like buying odd creatures and figures. Will continue to do so and wish DAZ would offer more than they do.
I like buying vegetation. Will continue to do so.
I like buying scene sets and props. It depends only on the specific item. Genre doesn't matter 'cause I love 'em all except 'temple' stuff for Vicky to stand around in. Will most likely continue.
I love getting new Genesis figures. Especially ones that come with their own texture sets, though not necessarily their own UVs.
I love getting new environments. Especially ones which play nicely with other props or sets I've bought.
I love getting Genesis clothing. Any outfits which work well for one, generally work well for most if not all Genesis figures. I generally buy more modest outfits though.
I love getting Genesis hairstyles. Again, more hairstyles means more variation, and many Genesis styles work regardless of age or gender.
But most of all, encompassing all of the previous things, I love CUTE. Can't get enough of it. Whether it's children playing happily, adorable bows and ribbons on an outfit, or sweet feminine dresses, I absolutely love having more cute things to dress up my characters or for them to play with.
It's my Achilles' heel. If it's cute, it goes into the basket almost instinctively.
I like to buy real world clothing and hair. I buy some scifi but stay away from steampunk.
I also like to buy scene sets. I usually mix and match from scenes to get my own scene but like to have sets as a starting point.
I am also a sucker for free stuff. If I see the word free, I am going to click on it.
Oh yeah something I forgot to Add:
Scene set I would love to buy -
Campsite - maybe a small "street" with 3 campsites on one side (each campsite would have tent place, concrete slab with picnic table, grill, electricity and water connections). The other side of the street would have 2 campsites with a restroom
/shower facility in between. The street itself could empty out into the lake. Pine trees and lots of dense vegetation.
I hear ya on the hairstyles. I like variety and with 40 characters and counting its hard to make each unique with the hair I have.
Spit - I haven't bought animals and vegetation as much but have some scenarios coming up. I did buy some chickens, sheep, and pigs for my medieval scene.
Cyber - I have never been much for free but I've spent so much money lately free perks my ears lol.
I'm generally fairly eclectic in my tastes, but there are a few patterns.
At this point, I only buy Genesis clothes. I'm more willing to still buy Gen 4 hair (for converting) and characters, but I have enough pretty fair skinned girls and pretty fair skinned boys that new characters have to really offer something new, like adding custom morphs to the genesis pool, if I'm going to even wish-list it.
Guy-stuff is more likely to be bought than Girl Stuff, everything else (project need, aesthetic appeal, price tag) being equal. Just because I hope that buying more Guy-stuff will get people to make more guy stuff.
I'm not big on Humanoid toons. Just not inspired by them often.
I don't buy a lot of Sci-Fi. I used to go through periods where something sci-fi would inspire me and I'd put a bunch of Sci-Fi stuff on the wist list... but I'd never get around to buying it.
I do buy Contemporary and Fantasy. My preferred Genre is Urban Fantasy so being able to blend them together makes me happy. However, skimpy fairy stuff is not my cup of tea. (I like my fairies old school, terrifying and beautiful rather than sexy and cute. This applies to boy fairies too.) In either genre, the keyword for clothing is "wearable." I don't mind sexy, as long as the sexy doesn't override the practical.
But I'm not really into Goth. I saw the birth of Goth. I wasn't impressed then either.
I love sets and props. I won't buy them instantly, but there's a reason why it's my largest runtime.
I love critters. Real world, extinct, toony, fantasy, alien. Felines, Canines, Equines and Dragons take center stage, but I love them all. Though I'm not really fond of bugs (and for my purposes, Spiders are bugs).
I love history and Pseudo-historical stuff. Accuracy is appreciated and preferred, but not required. I don't do illustrations for history books. :) By extension, this also applies to Non-western cultural stuff too... though I would be lying if I didn't admit to being occasionally a little burnt out on Japanese stuff.
These days, I tend not to buy stuff for human figures. At least not here. I don't use Genesis or DSON, and I've already bought almost everything I'm interested in for the older figures.
I like fantasy and SF, especially more practical stuff. I generally don't buy character textures that don't come with a no makeup option, because contemporary makeup tends to look out of place for fantasy, historical, etc.
I like sports. Not much available, but I buy what there is.
For commercial use i will buy what is needed for the project and charge the client.
For personal use I am likely to buy....
anything skimpy or sexy for either V4 or genesis as long as it is done well and fits realistically, meaning that in the real world the laws of physics would apply to the fitting.
I prefer skimpy/sexy since i think the female body is a work of art . As for genre, classic, sci fi or fantasy, don't do steampunk as I find it ugly and clunky. I do like medieval and renaissance time period clothing, but don't usually buy it as I rarely do renders from that time period.
I don't usually buy everyday type clothing since my everyday is a bit more sexy/skimpy (my GF and friends work in adult entertainment) than most others and I really have no desire to render boring everyday type scenes.
I like fantasy armor sets
I like military type clothing sets
I like sci fi clothing sets as long as they are not redundant, to many of the same style out there.
I rarely buy a texture set for any outfit, usually because it makes no sense because i have an image editing program and I have a whole folder of seamless textures.
Any heels or boots with heels for genesis, have plenty for V4 and most the women i know do not wear flats unless sneakers..
Jewelry sets, especially earrings
hair, it has to be realistic looking (NO HIGHLIGHTS ON THE TEXTURE!!) and have plenty of morphs, which very few have. I have yet to find a good long hair with proper morphs to curve the front strands around the breasts, it's like they always test it on flat chested women and have never seen a woman with long hair and a cup size over B.
Objects, I am a modeller so i usually design my own or there are many on the web for free. Weapons, not usually as I can make my own and that seems to be the one thing you can find on the web for free if you look.
Scenes, again I usually design my own or if it is well done and will save me the time, i will purchase if i can justify the price over how much i might use it.
Male items, I rarely purchase them unless I know it is something I will use often
Animals, I have a few so unless i actually need one or it is on sale big time, i don't usually purchase.
Vegetation, depends on how much I might use it and quality.(meaning realism)
I do buy pose sets if they are unique as they are really good for creating a starting point.
Character sets, I look for female mostly, unique head morphs (THAT ARE CUSTOM, NO DIALS) and high res (4000+) realistic textures with as few shadows/shading as possible. Makeups are nice, but not needed as I usually do my own. SSS and custom nodes not needed as i render in unbiased renderers
SALES, always looking for great sales
In a nutshell, these are my buying habits.
Dawaterrat - eclectic but nice. It gave me some things I've never considered. Thank you for your post.
Randym77 - I do like sports. I haven't did anything in that direction yet though. Lately I've been thinking along the lines of a bowling alley/game center. I haven't checked so don't know what is available.
Fsmcdesigns - I do buy a lot of pose packs although they don't usually fit but are good starting points. Thanks for your post. It is always interesting to see what others do.
I'll buy automotive stuff or people/creatures. Everything else, i'll make.
I envy y'all who make your own stuff. I can't do that yet but have started to learn. I can make a box but then again it's just a premade cube lol. It's kind of like drawing and stick figures.
I’m likely to buy items for Genesis, but not likely to buy V4/M4 items for genesis.
(but I know there are many good items for V4 M4,, and sometimes, I feel it has more detail
and many service appendix , preset,, than genesis items)
I m likely to buy many type morphs for genesis, but not likely to buy morph which need other morph.
I’m likely to buy fantasy , SF clothing,, but I do not like to get many same type clothing, as if made by somes template obj
(I feel,, there are too many almost same type items,, nowdays,,and usually,,
they have almost same type poze preset,as appendix,, and they have not many adjustment morphs
for pozing. rely on much smooth modifier)
I’m likely to buy clothing with lots of texture options and morphs, but not likely to buy simple options.
I more like the clothing which have many ,and uneditable easy surface group.
I do not likely to buy clothings which have only two or three part surface group, and
do not like items which need to buy gogeous preest made by professional to tweak as I like,,
I like plug in and tutorial more becaues,, it make me try to original clothing or original preset
and orginal light sets,, etc,,
(Actually,, we need not buy so many items,, I know I like serching items and get it,
but most of them are not used many,,, )

Ok I'm guilty of this but this year I can whatever I want as long as I use it and preferably learn from it.
Likely purchases:
- Creatures
- Vehicles
- Toon figures
- Modern/Sci-Fi Clothing & Sets
Unlikely purchases:
- Anything Genesis
- Fantasy Clothing & Sets
I'm a real sucker for hairs. Long, short, as long as they are good looking. I don't care about drawn in highlights on hair or clothing as long as it renders well. I really like hairs that can be used for male characters or are gender neutral, and ones that have enough styling morphs to reshape them for several different characters.
Another thing that gets me every time is versatility (I love Genesis!).
I also prefer clothing to have lots of extra morphs so you can layer it with pieces that didn't come with the same outfit, and increasingly I like it when the parts of the clothing that are modeled to look they should have different textures are on different mat zones.
I buy clothing that is modern, fantasy, or sci fi.
I buy every clothing outfit for Genesis that comes out for Platinum club because they tend to have lots of mix and matchable pieces and be well morphed.
I am also a sucker for bundles, but I am increasingly wary of buying larger bundles since I've ended up with several products I didn't really want that way.
If I buy something from an artist and find out it does things I like I will keep coming back for more of their products.
What do I purchase...hmmm.
Most things for Genesis...but I already have so much I'm starting to get picky about what I buy. I don't normally buy skimpy clothing but prefer historical, fantasy or realistic contemporary.
Love the new DAZ horse 2 and want to see more animals released in this format. I'm also a sucker for whimsical creatures like AntFarms recent stone golems and wood witch.
I also like to buy scenes but don't like it if they are too resource intensive. I love the look of the Forest but it slows my machine down to a crawl.
Good quality props that I will use are always handy.
I mainly buy from historical, fantasy, steampunk and contemporary genres
I buy very little for Gen4 mainly as I don't want to have to convert stuff to Genesis.
edited to add hair...I'm also a sucker for hairs.
Im a pretty tough customer.
I buy Genesis clothing - mostly contemporary. Morphs are a deal breaker for me, especially adjustment morphs, if cant see any basic adjustment morphs listed in the products feature list, I will usually not buy it unless it is truley exceptional.
I buy non-stylised Genesis Character Morph/shapes if they ship with a photo realistic-ish skin, are scultpted (rather than dial spun) and are based on real people (its usually quite easy to tell which one are and are not) The skin can be the real seller here though. There are far too many white characters, so I will usually pounce on anything ethnic, (so long as it not another pale skinned Lucy Lu look a like)
I buy hair sets when its regular or 'average' hairstyles, I dont go for fantasy or galmour.
I occasionally buy pose sets if they are actually practical as everyday type poses, if its glamour model type poses, i'll pass.
I buy prop sets if i have a use for them and if they are well done, I tend to end up going for the more expensive ones :) - so i am more sparing with these purchases.
Thats about it.
MJ007 - I like scifi. I haven't done any renders oddly enough though.
Fuseling - did you say bundles? I am a sucker for bundles, always thinking I'm getting a better deal and usually I do. And most of the things I use so it works out for the most part.
Pendraia - I like horse 2 so far. I'm using it in my current medieval series I'm calling The Witches' Sister.
Dogz - I like variety so I'm working on more ethnicity too. It's not as easy sometimes.
I'm a vendor, so my content needs aren't quite the same as the average customer, but:
I buy Genesis/DS4+ content. As long as it's financially viable, I am done with .cr2 falloffs forever.
I make a lot of supermorphing contemporary clothing, so I'm mostly going to buy stuff that I haven't made - shiny fantasy garb, props with good DAZ mats, realistic character sets, lots and lots of hair. Eventually I will own everything by 3dream and Mairy.
I won't say that I never buy sexy female outfits - sometimes I need them for promos - but they have to either be $5 or be uncommonly full-featured and well-made.
I won't buy an outfit that obviously has no morphs (clingy breasts on V5, muscle cling on M5 on supposedly loose shirts) unless it's very, very cheap. I can fix these issues with my own utilities, but I shouldn't have to, and people who won't do the work don't deserve my money.
I buy most Plat Club content because of its great quality and features - I don't know why these outfits are more likely to have great morphs and tons of pieces, but they are.
Now that I have the option, I mostly only buy content with DAZ mats. I will gladly pay more for sets with full DAZ scenes and light presets because they save me time, and time is money. An item has to be very unique - like, it has to be a 1971s airship - for me to be willing to adjust all the mats by hand.
I buy historical stuff, like clothes (V4/M4 and Genesis alike) and buildings (both except Regency and Medieval), but only with a certain degree of authenticity. Contemporary clothes are welcome, but most 'sexy' clothes appear ridiculous to me, especially when they come in loud and gaudy colors. I like it more subtle.
Morphs are very important; I won't buy clothes without proper morphs.
Hair!
I like strong, interesting and 'real' characters, male and female; no 'elfs' or Barbies. And I agree with Dogz: Far too many white characters here. Mankind fortunately owns a big variety of shades and features. The 'Ethnic Morphs' for V4/M4 and Genesis are not too helpful.
Kids and teens are not essential. Also Elfs, fairies, vampires etc., except for an occasional demon.
Creatures can be big fun; preferably for Genesis.
Animals are nice, also fantasy animals (like Dinokonda).
I buy nice vehicles of all kind.
I buy environments, houses and vegetation or vegetation sets.
Meanwhile I have a lot of everyday props, but nice new ones are welcome.
Unlike many others here, sometimes I like steampunk.
I'm definitely not interested in toons, brutes, fairy and medieval items, nor in most of the fantasy armor/adventure/mage sets. Military isn't interesting at all for me.
I still purchase Gen4 stuff, especially V4. With X&M's Perfect V4, Zev0's Vascularity and BendMorphs, V4 is still a viable figure for me.
I finally caved in and installed DS4.5 because I had to have the new hair plugins so I am starting to add a little here and there for Genesis, mostly the different morphs [Freak5, Aiko5, Mr Hyde, etc.] but I am not a huge fan of a lot of the clothing for Genesis at the moment.
I purchase just about everything by Stonemason, Danae and SAV.
SickleYield - Thanks for stopping in! As I emailed you before, I like your stuff especially how you do morphs. It's interesting to see what vendors buy. I just automatically assume they can make everything they want if they wanted too. I'm sure that's not always the case. I like to see what others do because it gives me ideas I've never thought of.
Polka Dot - I'm not big into elves, fairies, vampires (now I make an exception on werewolves) myself but if one of my upcoming projects call for it I'll make the exception. Thanks for your post!
Oh I absolutely love Stonemason! I can't think of anything of his I wouldn't want. Unfortunately I still have a ways to go lol. I bought a lot of his stuff in the early going and still do. :)
Thank you! :-)
And ha ha, I wish. Making good clothes is a full-time job in and of itself. If I had to stop and make a full prop set every time I needed one for a promo, I'd never sell any clothes. And hair - well, it's probably the hardest thing you can do in our corner of 3d. I don't know if I even could. (And I'll settle for being able to make Garibaldi and/or LAMH presets I don't hate.) I hope to get into characters, but I'm waiting on being able to afford Zbrush to really do the best I can with that.
I will buy things from any genre under the right circumstances because I might end up doing a promo or product in any of them. My end game is to be able to do massive gothy armors, but again, Zbrush. Meantime, contemporaries and utilities seem to be what I'm best at with current tools, so that's mostly what I make.
This is a hobby for me, so I don't have to buy for a client or suit anyone but myself.
I like to buy realistic animals or creatures, not toonish, that is. I am so looking forward to using Look At My Hair for animal fur.
I buy ordinary props with interesting textures or zones I can texture
I buy texture/material sets if they are versatile and a nice price
Props I like are furniture and decor, or interesting vehicles. Victorian stuff is appealing to me.
Generally I find V3 and V4 and M4 stuff that fits Genesis but not so much specifically made for Genesis.
I like the fact I can throw a male shirt on the female and it doesnt cling around her like two grapefruits.
I'm likely to not buy an outfit that has clunky or high heels, already have too many. My gals got to be able to walk and run!
I do like buckles and real looking belts. Don't buy anything more with a "sash".
Never figured out dynamic stuff, so I avoid it.
Looking forward to picking up a few new treasures. But, it seems to me some of the older stuff is priced much higher than it used to be, even tho "on sale". I'm on a budget, so I'm real picky and gonna look carefully.
And I agree with SickleYield: Most Plat Club products are excellent; I like to buy them.
This is just a hobby for me too....an expensive hobby but nevertheless a hobby. I have a lot of fun and it's a great stress relief.
I bought The Daz Cow, and every single piece of Skankwear ever made for it!
Got Noggin's Cow too, and all of it's Skankwear.
I am Guaranteed to buy The Millennium Cow immediately upon it's release.
Needless to say, there will be far too much Skankwear released for The Millennium Cow to buy it all, but I'll certainly try.
