I just need to get from DS3 to DS4 in the least painful way

The short version is I need to start using DS4 however I have had multiple issues in the past that I need to get past so if someone can point me in the right directions I need to:

Manage my own content. The only Daz3d product I run is Studio, I don't need a service and I don't need my runtime managed. I want to manage it like I do with my DS3 runtime. Is this possible?

Not have everything on the interface calling out "what do I do now?". I'm currently using two LCD's, one in portrait with nothing but the preview window 27" tall, I would like to keep my interface as close to allowing that workspace available to me. Is this possible?

Not use genesis. I don't need to take advantage of this product, I would like to stick with V4 and M4 for now and the foreseeable future. Is this possible?

thank you.

    I can answer some.

    You don't need to install CMS if you don't want it but in doing so you will not be able to create content Catagories. But yes you can manage you own content as you see fit. I install all my content on a USB Hard Drive as explained here http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/11176/

    Not have everything on the interface calling out “what do I do now?”. Not too sure what you are referring too, can you expand please?

    As for not using Genesis well you are free to use what you want. Do you mean not installing it at all. I am not sure what Genesis Starter Essentials has now in the download so it may be possible that you don't need to install it.

    Short answer is yes to all the above. I still use my existing runtimes as in Studio 3, organised in my own peculiar way, with the exception of Genesis and its morphs. If you're not intending to use Genesis then you can just carry on as before. I have everything laid out across two monitors with the viewport on one and my most used tabs positioned where they suit me on the other monitor, and was able to duplicate the layout pretty much from Studio 3. It's not completely identical since there are of course some new tabs with extra functionality. I've replaced the default launch files with some that somebody released somewhere a while back (sorry can't remember!) which get rid of the "what do I do now" blurb, although now Studio launches with large expanses of blank windows instead, but it's less irritating now that I'm not constantly being reminded that I don't really know what I'm doing!

    Okay, maybe that wasn't such a short answer, but it's still basically "yes" :)

    think that link might be dead but thanks for the fast replies. I need to just bite the bullet. My software is aging around my computer and it should be the other way around.

    Don't forget you can change the UI layout to "City Limits" and the dark theme, which helps a lot to reduce Studio 4's handholding, by putting everything you need on one page instead of several different tabs.

    has anyone tried to document this procedure? If so I might try but I think I might be the last DS3 holdout.

    moving from DS3 to DS4 in the manner of a user who wants the functionality of DS3 without the "enhancements" that are inherent to DS4.

    Lol. You are not the last DS3 holdout ... lol. There are many of us. There are many more who made the switch to Poser, too. I resist the change, as well.

    son-of-a-!#(@ none of these worked last night, they work now.

    @willow
    DS4 is defiantly hyped up and you know what Flav-O-Flav says about believing the hype.

    ...he say's "don't"

    Actually I keep getting a time out when trying to get the zip for the replacement "I don't know what the hell I'm doing" tabs, but that's a pretty minor issue.

    I would heartily recommend you keep your Studio 3 running alongside Studio 4. It won't take up much space, and there are still plugins that won't work in 4, and others that are a bit fiddly to transfer. Studio 4 uses up quite a bit more RAM, but there are so many good things about it I'm sure you'll like it once you get everything laid out the way that suits you best. Avoid progressive rendering like the plague though! It always causes a memory leak on my pc, and then everything falls over. Broadly though, Studio 4.5 is A Very Good Thing! :)

    @DrStupid
    good to know, especially about the progressive rendering.
    DS3 in both the 32 and 64 bit flavors are not going anywhere on my hard drive or in my bottom toolbar quick-launch right now.

    Does anyone know if is there any way to get the rendering window to do what it did in DS3 or am I stuck with the DS4 one with the contextual interface at the bottom?

    StratDragon,

    post a screen shot of what you have for a setup so we can best give pointers please.

    I dont feel DS45 is hyped. It renders faster then DS3 and has new technology that can be used with older figures. The collision modifier which was designed for genensis clothing can easily be used with Gen3 and Gen4 with their clothes on them and not Genesis. Dynamic cloth works on 64bit windows and on the Mac version. Like anything, it will take getting use to.

    DS3 and DS45 can co-excist.

    not sure what you mean by setup. the interface spans two monitors, I generally work off parameters, surfaces and dforms in one section and content and scene in another and rarely need anything else.

    rereading your previous post, are you asking how to get rid of the space at the bottom of the render window so you dont have the option to state file name and saving location? If so, it cannot be removed to my knowledge.
