Genre Movies As Inspiration For Animations

The 48 Hour Film Contest (make a 5 minute movie in two days) has required elements (prop, character, line of dialogue), and more importantly a randomly selected genre (Comedy, Drama, Western, Fantasy - several dozen total) drawn from a hat at the kickoff meeting.  I've got a list of my favorite movie/TV Series in each genre as a sort of inspiration for a short animation, list below.  I'd be interested in any movie/TV series that others really like.  Note - "Film De Femme" means a strong female character, "Music Film" is not a Musical but a movie about music).

Buddy Film - "Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid"
Comedy - "Noises Off"
Coming of Age - "The Last Picture Show"
Dark Comedy - "Dr. Strangelove"

Indeed, "The Fifth Element" is an alltime favorite of mine.  "It's 'Star Wars' on acid! Gary Oldman, who plays Zorg, the film's mega-hammy villain, has said about the story."  Gary Oldman is one of the great alltime villains (maybe the best in "True Romance"):

I've listed some of my inspiration in my Brash Lonergan thread.  However, I thought it might be fun to just list some more movies that I like in each of these genres.  I'm a big fan of older films.  For most, I listed two.

Action / Adventure - "King Kong" original, and "Rocketeer"
Buddy Film - "Road to..." any of the Crosby/Hope films, and "Spies Like Us"
Comedy - "Duck Soup", and "Young Frankensein"
Coming of Age - "The Cowboys," and "Sixteen Candles"
Dark Comedy - "Dr. Strangelove" and "Little Miss Sunshine"
Detective / Cop - "Columbo" and "48 Hours"
Drama - "Casablanca" and "Terms of Endearment"
Fish Out of Water - "Splash" and "Moscow on the Hudson"
Horror - "Psycho" and "The Bad Seed"
Musical - "South Park Movie" and "Brigadoon"
Road Movie - see Hope and Crosby in buddy movies
Romance - "When Harry Met Sally" and "The Quiet Man"
Silent Film - "The Thief of Baghdad" and "Metropolis"
Time Travel Movie - "Back to the Future" and "Idiocracy"
War or Anti-War Film - "A Bridge too Far" and "Paths of Glory"
Biography - "Patton" and "Lawrence of Arabia"
Family Film - "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" and "Shrek"
Fantasy - The Lord of the Rings trilogy
Film de Femme - "Little Foxes" and "The Philadelphia Story"
Martial Arts - "Rumble in the Bronx" and "Kung Fu Hustle"
Mockumentary - "Spinal Tap" and "CSA Confederate States of America"
Music Film  - "The Commitments" and "That Thing you Do"
Mystery - "Usual Suspects" and "Rear Window"
Period Piece - "Ben Hur" and "Gladiator"
Sci Fi - "Flash Gordon" and "Star Wars: Episode 4 - A New Hope"
Slapstick - "Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," and "Airplane"
Sports Film - "The Natural" and "The Longest Yard" (Burt Reynolds version)
Thriller / Suspense - see Rear Window and Psycho above
Western - "Big Country" and "The Cowboys."
Adventure/Serial - "Raiders of the Last Ark" and Sean Connery sequal (#3?)
Animal Film - "Bringing up Baby" and ("Ben" and "Willard")
Holiday Film - "Home Alone"  and "Its a Wonderful Life"
Superhero - "The Dark Knight" and "Superman" (1978)

I see a lot ot titles in there that I could have included, especially (not including the ones I already listed above):

Comedy - "Duck Soup", and "Young Frankensein"  (Or any number of Marx Bros. and Mel Brooks movies)
Dark Comedy -  "Little Miss Sunshine"
Detective / Cop - "Columbo" and "48 Hours"
    Horror - "Psycho"
Silent Film -  "Metropolis" (At least as good as my choice)
Time Travel Movie -  "Idiocracy" (A great concept)
Biography - "Patton" (I originally picked this one also)
Music Film  - "The Commitments" and "That Thing you Do" (Both right up there with "Almost Famous")
    Mystery - "Usual Suspects"
Slapstick - "Airplane"  (apparently most people include farce with slapstick, I always think of Chaplinesque physical humor)
Adventure/Serial - "Raiders of the Last Ark"
    Animal Film - "Willard"
    Superhero - "The Dark Knight"

I have little argument with your entire list, its just that these stand out for me.

Excellent point about slapstick vs farce.  I'm a huge fan of Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd.  Can't argue with your "The General" pick.  I guess I will substitute...

Lucille Ball for her stomping grapes and chocolate factory skits.

Yes, those are great slapstick.  This one, though ... great farce.
