Clothes modifying

I've searched the forums for the above I couldn't find it but if it exist point me that way. I was wondering if there is a way to modifying the clothes that come with daz. I have the vest on a character but I want the sleeves gone and a portion cut out of it, but I can't seem to delete the polygons I want (or modify it in anyway). I don't feel like buying some clothes offline so is there a way to delete the poly's I don't want. I am totally new to daz so I don't know much of it .

Deleting the polys would not be a great way of doing it, it would most likely break the UV Mapping at the least.

The way most people do it, is by using transparency maps to make parts of the clothing invisible. If you search the forum here for 'Transparency', you may turn something up. If you don;t get anything, or nobody else responds, post again, and I'll see what I can turn up for you.

The Polygon Group editor tool would let you select some polygons, assign them to a new material, and make that material 0% opaque. Or if the boundaries aren't where you want them you can paint black on the template where you want holes or missing fabric and white elsewhere and apply that map to the Opacity channel in the Surfaces pane.

In Hexagon you can delete polygons without breaking UVS. I do this quite a bit. I haven't ever tried in DS as I didn't know it could be done. Adding Geometry in Hex does, however, break UVS.

Didn't know that wancow, thanks, handy to know.

I must try shortening a few sleeves or dresses myself, just for fun.

keep in mind, it will not work to make morphs or whatever... If you're simply altering clothing you might want to try re-assigning material zones first...

Yes, I know that. You can't make morphs of any kind by removing or adding vertices, the vertex count must remain the same.

I know I can do that to, but removing the polys would be a lot quicker than creating an opacity map, assuming that I can find an edge that I can use. Creating new shading domains would create the same problems though, edges would need to be straight.

It was just a thought, I don;t have anything particuklar in mind, thanks again.

I have not the first clue how other apps handle UVS, though... however, when building hair, it sure is nice to be able to get rid of unseen geometry and not lose UVS... :)

I'm dragging my model into carrara 8.5 and making a new shading domain name, but in the future it would be kinda handy to have the ability to change the meshes in either one just saying (deleting polygons saves on memory, and being able to straighten an edge loop would make the opacity map look better). Thanks for your help and sorry for any inconveniences I may have caused.

Removing polygons is not a good idea for another reason. You'd have to re-rig the figure, and any morphs made for the original figure will not work on the new one. I found this out the hard way trying to turn the Hongyus Cowgirl jeans into "Daisy Duke" cut-offs. The Trans map is a much simpler process, and much more versatile.

A lot of us use problem solving as a method to learn... :) So don't appologize. Go find a mess to make, and throw it at us as fast as you can :) It's a puzzle, and we luuuv puzzles in 3D :)

I tried out the template painting in Photoshop idea, and it worked great! Thanks, I had never cottoned on how to use templates in the Opacity channel before.

The only problem is in saving the amended figure - that is, it only offers the option to save as duf, of course, whereas I want to save it back where I got it in the Poser-side Runtime.

How do I save/convert the amended figure in Poser format, for ease of use?

    Thanks for any help

I cannot remember how Transparencies were done in Poser, however, if you have it, all you have to do is load hair and look for the transparency map, where it's applied, and that's where you apply it for your clothing... it's Opacity in DS...
