A request for Maclean: additions to Streets (Done!)

edited January 2018 in Product Suggestions

I love this set, but there's one slight problem: you can't show an outside corner. In the attached .jpg (from the promo render), you'll notice that the two storefronts on the corner are a physical impossiblility: they can't extend back into each other. One or the other would have to be a stretch of more-or-less blank wall. Either that, or a single store would have to occupy the whole corner so it could extend back both ways.

I suppose one solution would be to create a vertical plane, cover it with brick, and fiddle it into the scene, but what I'd really like to see are a few minor additons to an already outstanding set.

Yah? Nah?

[ Title edited: I finally realized that the product in question is 'Streets', not 'City Streets'. Sorry if it caused any confusion. sad Also added (Done!) to the title. ]

Sorry for the late reply. I only just came across this thread today.

Yup. You've spotted an annnoying problem which I only saw after the set was done. And I'm afraid I don't have any instant solution.

The only thing I can offer is this. I already had a few ideas jotted down for a follow-up set, and this thread has prompted me to move it up the list. It won't be anything fast because I'll simultaneously do a full overhaul of the original (which I'll release as a free update) - with some new corner stores which match up - and probably with IRay/3DL versions.

I'll be going to the UK in September, and one of things I'll be photographing is storefronts, parking lots, alleyways, etc. I can't promise when, but I'll try to get to this as soon as I can. I already have other products to finish, but *maybe* if I can start in November, you'll see it early next year. Don't hold me to it, but I'll try my best. Personally, I'm rather fond of this set, so I'd really like to update and expand it.

Thanks for the post! It reminded me to look back and deal with this.

Edit - PS. I'm open to any other suggestions, both for the original set and a follow-up.

An update on this. For various logistical reasons, (my release schedule, sales dates, etc), I'm going to start this in mid-August, rather than later in the year. So, unless I run into any horrible difficulties, you should see an updated Streets pack + an expansion in November/December.

Excellent news, thanks! As for suggestions, I'd be happy with more of the same—i.e. increased variety—plus an outside corner block or two. Or four.

Maybe others will pitch in with their suggestions, but that's about it for me.

You know, if it wasn't such a handy-dandy set I, wouldn't have cared enough to quack about it. wink

[ edit/afterthought: As a matter of fact, if one of the storefronts was an adults-only-type shop (toys, DVDs, naughty lingerie, not necessarily on display), that would suit my evil purposes admirably. Plus any downtown district has at least one, right? ]

Ah well, I don't think an adult store would pass DAZ's eagle eye! They like to keep it family-friendly. But have you thought of modifying the textures yourself? If you know a bit of Photoshop and can get a storefront pic, you could drop it in easily enough. Just a suggestion.

For the 2nd pack, I'm thinking of maybe a parking lot, some alleyways, a cinema front - stuff like that. Plus more buildings. I'm sure once I get started, I'll find plenty more to add.

I was thinking of something fairly discreet in the window display, no raunchier than the kind of content DAZ already sells in superabundance. But heck, yeah, I could probably fudge up a storefront that would offend the self-appointed guardians of public morals (as if there ever was such a thing). I look forward to seeing what you come up with! For what it's worth, you have at least one guaranteed insta-buy.

    Cheers!

  • So, how likely is any new add ons for this product to come with templates to rull your own storefronts and stuff?  Does the current one have templates?

All my products come with templates, unless there's some weird reason for not having them. But offhand, I can't think of any that didn't have templates.

I just checked my files and Streets has 40 templates. These should be available through your product library. And of course, a new pack will have all the templates.

That's on my to-do list too. But to be honest, every time I think about it, I'm daunted by the idea of what to put in it. I'm not sure I could find enough new shapes to make a decent pack. Still, it's definitely something I'll get around to looking at.

Anything that would let me expand on this would be nice: http://cat-man-dancing.deviantart.com/art/Primitives-Tutorial-for-DAZ-608280754

More morphing ground planes would be great, as well.
A long straight cylinder that would bend at many places for cords, or pipes going around a corner, a whip antenna, etc.
    Same, but rectangular, for ducts...
Slings for rifles, carrying cases, etc.
A box_packet that opens on a hinge, very useful for belt pouches, etc.
I'm sure your fans can come up with more ideas.
Probably get into Greeble territory, though, like I just did. ;)

Oh, and could you make your flat surfaces out of multiple polygons so that we can use Geometry Editor to create smaller openings?

    Thank you!

Suggestions noted, Petercat. And btw, very cool page!

Re the long straight cylinder that bends - I started building an entire pipe system years ago, which I had intended to be used for pipes, tunnels, etc, but in the end, I decided its use was too limited to ever sell well enough to justify the work involved. I won't resurrect it, but I may look at it again and modify some of it for Prims 2.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but there's a UK pedestrian light in the original Streets set which has a pedestrian request box parented to it. Many types of pedestrian crossing here do have a request box, but not the Belisha Beacon type in the Streets set - that orange light on the top of the pole flashes on and off constantly to let approaching drivers know that the crossing is ahead, and it's the law that they have to slow down and stop if anyone is waiting to cross. This means that there's nothing for pedestrians to request, and so there's no box on the pole. UK users know this and probably have an 'Uh?' moment on spotting the box on the Streets light pole and just remove it, but US and other users are likely to think that it's authentic and use it as it is, which is maybe why no one has mentioned it. If you're updating the set, this might be as good a time to mention it as any :)

You've got the zebra crossing right, though. Belisha beacons indicate this type of crossing and aren't found at any of the the other types in the UK. I hope you don't think I'm being critical just for the sake of it. I really love that you include UK stuff in the product as a lot of the everyday things that we take for granted like that in the UK are much harder to come by in the 3D world than US stuff is. I just know I'd want someone to mention something like that if it were me, especially if I were about to give something an overhaul and do the same thing again.

    Astracadia,

No problem. I'm glad you mentioned it. I thought I'd researched everything pretty thoroughly, but I missed that.

I'll include that fix, and maybe for the second pack, I can add the request box to traffic lights and turn it into a Pelican crossing (with a zigzag tex for the street). I just spotted that I didn't include presets for the orange light (off/on), so I'll add them too.

I'm from Scotland and I've always noticed the lack of UK-centric content, so I try to include it wherever possible.

maclean, would you consider doing a product for streets of Barcelona? and Moscow.

To be honest, no. I'd have to be in those cities and know them well before I could attempt it. Individual cities always have unique little details which make them different. I could probably do Milan, since I lived there for 20 years, but Italian cities are very 'organic' - that is, they grew naturally, with streets which curve and bend and go in odd directions. Not at all suited to a modular 3d pack.

Stonemason is the best person to tackle a city like Barcelona.

Ok, thanks, then...as I loved Venice, I would like to see an add-on re-shaded to show the buildings new when were the oldie golden times, and an expansion for Venice Palaces and a few luxury places :p

FWIW, I realised a few years ago we've had one in plain sight in our town for some time; I was passing in the bus and happened to notice the too-small-to-read-from-across-the street text on the non-see-through clouded glass window. So it can be fairly discreet. Although in hindsight the shop's logo being just a teensy bit evil (horns and pointed tail) was a bit of a giveaway...

Let me add another, if you don't mind, something like your EMP Terrain:

flags, pennants and banners of different shapes so that we can have them hanging loose, or trailing in the wind.
Shield shaped, triangular, split-tailed (5-sided, triangular cutout in one end), rectangular.
Like cavelry pennants, that sort of thing.
(Yes,I need a cavelry pennant like, right now!)

Noted. But re the flags/banners - they may appear in Streets 2.

As of yesterday, I've finished the update to Streets, except for one thing. I built a city block (to resolve the corners issue), but I won't have textures for it until I come back from the UK later in september. However, the update went well. I've made a number of minor fixes, and there are now 3 separate versions - Iray, 3DL and Poser. If all goes well, it should be available at the end of next month.

Btw Petercat, did you look in Everyday Party Decorations for pennants? There are a couple of them there.

Hi, maclean, I see you're still following this thread. If you're still open to suggestions, I'd like to see a 'Handicapped Parking' sign to go with the other goodies. A similar painted decal for use on pavement would also be sweet.

Eagerly looking forward to the new release! smiley

Yes, but I didn't see any. Am I missing something?
Can't go riding into battle with balloons tied to a staff.
    It just isn't done.
I saw the "happy Birthday" banner, that would be inappropriate. But funny, hmmm...
I am using the "Star Folded" as rank insignia.
There's a Morphing Sticker in your Everyday Labels and Signs that will work, but the morphs don't really look windblown.
And the Pennant in that pack doesn't morph at all. It's meant for a wall.

So far your Morphing Terrain is the best, maybe I can use transparency maps to get the shapes that I want.

Edit: With transparency maps, Morphing Sticker and Morphing Terrain. Close, but not there:

Both of those will be in the next pack. I've just finished making new streets with parking spaces, and there will be a handicapped space and sign. And while I was doing that, I made a complete set of streets with a narrower sidewalk and wider tarmac, along with 'adaptor streets' so they can be mixed with the originals. That will allow you to widen out the road wherever you want.

Ok. I see the type of pennant you need. To be honest, I'm not sure where or when I could fit flags into something, but I'll definitely keep it in mind. I might be adding flags to Streets 2, (since so many stores have them outside), but I'm not sure yet how they'll look or how morphable they'll be.

Not just because of the quality and versatility of your work, either.
Because you care enough to come on the forums, treat us with respect,
    and listen to our suggestions.
(BTW, in my travels I once saw a store on a corner with two entrances
and two different storefronts, inside it was the same store - I think one
front was "toys" and the other was "art supplies"!)
And of course, there are the stores with two different entrances for two
different clientele. Usually in the Adult trades...

Um.... please don't get too excited. I will do it one day, but I have absolutely no idea when. The mentions of it in this thread were a side-issue, and although I've made notes, I have no plans for when I'll get to it.

  • That's fine. Just wanted to express interest. I'm interested in a revamped city streets too!
