C.A. Michaels art

Hello all,

This is my first time posting here and I'd like to get some opinions on my characters. My sister in law thinks they all look like manequins. I think they look pretty good for what I have taught myself. And what I have available to me. https://www.daz3d.com/gallery/users/44882

Hi Cynthia, welcome to the Art Studio!

The first thing I noticed on a few of them- where are your characters supposed to be looking? Some were between looking at the viewer, and looking halfway down the body, toward the waist. I'd go one way or the other. Second, some of the arms would benefit from more bending, it will give them a bit more fluidity. (Zander needs some work with that shoulder, in my opinion. Samuel's shoulder looks more relaxed. I think Zander's is too high.)   Bending the arm and taking it forward or backwards will "loosen up" the shoulders. I would also change the hand positions on a few of them, they are a bit clawlike or not quite natural (such as Del's hand.)  Another way to avoid a mannequin look is to squint the eyes slightly.

You have a nice variation of lighting, coming from the side,  and there's a good variation on character types. I think Jennifer Long looks good, she is very confident in that stance. You're off to a great start!

Looks like you are off to a good start!  Posing people naturally is not an easy feat.  I frequently use google to find something similar to the type of pose I am looking for so that I have a reference to look at as I am posing.  I know several people who will do the pose in a mirror so they can see what it really looks like.

  • Thak you all you have all been so helpful. I'm re-rendering all of them with better lightning and more tone and yes fixing the hands and shoulders as you say. thank so much!!!!
