Texturing terrain

I haven't textured a terrain in Carrara in years.  Looking for a refresher on ways to make the scenes look better than the default shaders / scenes in Carrara (for regular ground, covered with smattering of grass / stone ).  Can't recall if quick fix was via scaling, use of noise, or using jpegs in place of procedural shaders - but think there was a quick simple qay to get things looking pretty good without taking too much time.  Not sure if those threads were on these forums or old DAZ forums.  Thanks for any suggestions.
