Does Gex-X not work in the 4.9.3.166 beta? [Solved (sort of)]

...I just noticed that the Gen-X tab does not show up in the Window menu in the last 4.9.3 beta. When I open up 4.8 it is there as well as being listed in the "About Installed Pkugins" window. I uninstalled and re-installled everything but it still doesn't show up in the beta.

You have to manually copy several files to the DazStudio4 Public Build folder structure. There are instructions for this somewhere in the forum.

...sounds complicated and a bit strange as both 4.8 and the beta share the same Library and Runtime structures.

No, it is pretty simple, but I can't locate the instructions now. They are buried somewhere in the forums.

...not sure how that would work with my setup as everything is on a separate drive instead of the C;/Boot and I don't use the C:/Documents folder.

Just look at where the files are installed in your regular build and copy them to the corresponding place in your beta folder structure.

I think the catch is that the 'source' files (on a windows pc) are in the 'roaming' folder. The GenX installer would take care of that, but I didn't try to run it again, as it might screw up the 4.8 installment (I use 4.8 and 4.9beta)

I've got a custom - anything but standard - 4.9beta install - and the dutch version of windows - and in my case to get it working I had to copy  "d3dGenX2.dll"  from the '..../----your ds4 folder name----/plugins' folder to the '..../----your ds4 beta folder name/plugins' folder

And then I had to copy and paste (NOT cut and paste) the content of the '..../users/user/AppData/Roaming/DAZ 3D/Studio4/GenX2' folder to  '..../users/user/AppData/Roaming/DAZ 3D/Studio4 Public Build/GenX2' folder

('users/user'  might be named different; as said I don't have the English but the Dutch version of windows, and it may also depends on how you installed the beta)

    Sigh...this is getting so messy.

I don't know what version I have but I THINK I have the latest version and it added the GenX tab once I logged into Connect inside of Daz Studio.

...don't use Connect as the workstation is offline.

Actually found a workaround that seems a bit simpler than messing with the runtime/library/documents folder structure (particularly again as I have a dual drive setup).  As I still have 4.8 active, I ran Gen-X 2 there,  transferred what I needed, and they all show when I open Genesis in the beta.  A bit of a round about method, but it works.

That's the way I have been doing it. @magnumdaz, messy indeed

I was under the impression that certain plugins do not function in the betas. Its not just GenX, but several others that are disabled in my beta.

I just open 4.8 and do my GenX-ing there. Any new morphs and presets you create in one will work in the other. It seems you discovered this as well.

I do have genx2 working in 4.9.4beta, but as said in my earlier post; it takes some work.

Not sure if plug-ins are disabled, but 3rd party (non-DAZ) plugins, like genx, are not included in any beta....and so there are no installers specific for the beta, unlike the DS plug-ins from DAZ itself....

GenX2 is a little bit different than a lot of the plugins we all use. The default installation needs to have some critical content/conversion templates under the (each) User's windows DS settings directory located at (roughly):

      C:\Users\==your_win_username==\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\Studio4\GenX2\

Note that this is *not* your content library! and it is *not* your program directory! This is the DS settings space that saves your program usage settings (window locations, interface tweaks, etc.) and other Program (not content) specific settings. For Public Beta users, there is another separate settings folders. So there's one for the main DS version, and one for the Public Beta version ('Studio4' and 'Studio4 Beta Build' ? - double check that folder name)

The actual compiled plugin binary in the default/current DS program directory's (64bit)  'plugins' folder:

C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\plugins\d3dGenX2.dll  (or your program folder equivalent)

The Public Beta installs also need to have the equivalent DLL file(s) (manually?) copied to their counterpart beta-version directories to work as well.

GenX2 was updated just before good Mr. Sessler (Dimension3D) passed away a few months back, and this was to reflect new changes in the DS characters IIRC, not to match DS binary versions. His update should work in any of the DS 4.5+ versions - at least in the binary compatibiltiy/DLL sense.

Remember too that there is/was a GenX version before GenX2. This needs to be uninstalled/removed or it will conflict with the newer GenX2, and it's not at all obvious why it's broken when both versions are present. If you have the old one and new one, only install the new version. It's better and does everything that the first version did, and more.

    cheers - hope this helps,

ETA: I didn't notice that @glaseye described the same details above - between us, hopefully folks can conquer this quirky kritter.

Well, rather than potentially mess up some things, I'll just use 4.8 for those plugins. I still use 4.8 on a regular basis anyway, so its not like I am going out of my way to open it.   --Open 4.8, do the GenX deal, and go back to 4.9 if I want to. Nothing to it.

While this assumes current and/or future users still have 4.8.x available (c'mon DAZ!?!), I'm with you on the 'keep it simple' approach.

That said, IF you have a working plugin for 4.8 in its plugin directory, that same plugin DLL should currently also work in the 4.9 plugin directory. The rest of the setup details are here and about, and if anyone gets stuck, just show us where you are, and we'll see if we can get you working from there.

It's not that they "don't work in the beta", the problem is that some plugins rely on support files installed into the program location, and the full release and beta programs are installed in separate, independent locations. When you install a plugin before installing a beta, obviously the support files won't exist in the beta location. If you uninstall then reinstall the plugin, the installer will place the support files in both program locations.

Note that after you've done this once, the plugin support files will still exist when you update the beta to a newer version — just like installed content, plugin files are only uninstalled by the plugin uninstaller.

On the gripping hand, some plugins will not work in newer D|S versions until they're updated. The Dynamic Cloth plugin is one of these, it gets updated to keep up with each D|S update.

Here are the plugins that I've found need to be updated to match each DAZ Studio version update (of any kind - beta or std releases):

    • Photoshop Bridge
    • GoZ
    • MimicLive
    • Decimator (payfor)
    • Dynamic Clothing Control (payfor for extended functions)
    • Alembic Exporter (payfor)

I believe none of these will work with DS unless their versions match (the last number of the version). These all have a 'DAZ maintains these' sort of flavor. I'm surprised that the animate2 and Poser Format Exporter plugins aren't on this list, but they're not. Anybody know of any others?

    cheers,
