What is a 'clearance' sale?

I know that many folks would unable to communicate without their pet catchphrases and clichés, but a 'clearance' sale on digital content has to be one of the most ludicrous things I've ever seen.
Let me guess: DAZ 3D is running out of hard drive space and needs to make room for G8 content. Once these babies are out the door, we can bring in the new inventory.
I mean, seriously. Did anyone else notice how silly that is? Just wondering.

They may actually be retiring some of the items in the store; they've done it periodically ever since I've been using DAZ Studio, which has been about 8 years now.
I've seen the "clearance sale" language on other sites, too. I don't know what it means in Dazese but, to my understanding. elsewhere, it means that an older item that doesn't meet a certain sales threshold anymore is reduced in price. If they can't move units at the discount price, the item is dropped for sale at that site.
Not silly to me, just marketing speak and usually means good discounts. I try not to overthink it.
From another store that shall remain nameless, that is when they put some items that haven't sold much in awhile at a discount and then have a preset amount of time pass without a sale (for the sake of this discussion, let's say three-months) before it is removed forever from the store.
Believe me, I try not to overthink it too, but that one just jumped out at me...and in my opinion nearly all present-day marketing speak is silly or worse. But hey, I'm also old enough to remember the Brylcreem commercial that assured me that "a little dab'll do ya," and that 'gals' would love to run their fingers through my hair.
As Frank Zappa famously said: "Study stupidity, kids. It's not getting smarter out there."
Also must buy 3 new items to get the biggest discount on up to 15 items. What kind of "clearance" is that? I mean, most stores you see a Clearance Price listed it's automatically at the highest discount without any new purchase prerequisites. Maybe they should have called it something else. "Clearance" implies that price is the lowest they're ever going to be and the stock is limited so grab 'em while you can before they're gone forever. At least that's how my Dominion store explains such marketing lingo. On the other hand, they're selling goods that are way more perishible than Vicky's bikinis.
Gee ... I hope in this case "clearance" does not mean "vaulted" like the older generation stuff. Would be very sad if I could no longer buy M4, V4 and Genesis/Genesis 2 products from Daz. Not sure I have a big enough sledge hammer to wallop G3 & G8 into Poser. Come to think of it, I'm not sure anyone does. :-(
If you're in the PC+, you can use those for the 3 new items. They can be any PC items that still have the "new" banner in the corner too, not just the last two weeks worth.
They've run these sorts of "clearance" sales before, and I don't remember them vaulting anything because of it. I seem to remember them catching a lot of flack for vaulting stuff last time, and they annouced it. I don't think they'd vault without letting us know (PA items excluded, as those are up to the PA, not up to DAZ.)
Yeah, the sale conditions (Buy 3 new items etc.) are a bit of a joke, and so are the quoted 'regular' prices. Who in the last year has actually plunked down $135 for the V7 bundle, or $70 for the V4 anatomy bundle? V4? Really? Pfft.
"Only 15 items"
Wonder if it stacks if I buy another 3 new releases in a new cart. I'm actually pretty delighted with this sale, it lets me catch up on a lot of G3 morphs while adding to my G8 collection. Suddenly! An excuse to buy Lainey.
Regardless of whether or not the 'sale' conditions and prices are a bargain, and whether or not some of the 'sale' items may actually be discontinued (not any time soon, I bet!), it was the word 'clearance' that pulled my trigger.
With real, tangible goods that occupy actual shelf or warehouse space, a clearance sale means you need to make room for new inventory...or want customers to believe you do. You only have 'X' number of item 'Y'. Sell those and you can bring in 'X' number of item 'Z'.
With digital content, 'Y' and 'Z' don't take up any physical space at all, and you can sell as many as people will buy. In this context, the word 'clearance' has no legitimate meaning whatsoever. As a marketing ploy it's laughable once you start (over)thinking about it.
I agree it's terrible terminology.
I missed the 15 item limit at first and it was driving me crazy. :P
Of course, bundles count as single items. So I used three PC items as my new products, then picked up the starter bundles for the last two G3M figures that I didn't already have, Darius and Lucien, for $18-something each, and tossed on a stack of the ImagineX sets that were discounting to between $1.50 to $3.00 each. In the end, it ended up being 24 items for less than $72.00, which isn't too bad.
can we get B-Stock ware then when customers did return something ?
or
"all must go out"
Good one! Maybe DAZ should charge a restocking fee on returns.
Well I really hope nothing gets retired (at least nothing on my wishlist) that fear has already caused me to waaaaay over-spend this month. Although between the last 2 purchases I was able to get 50-some items for about $40 so that's not bad.
Now I just need to get off my butt and get a database program written so I can find everything.
I came across something in my library for genesis just the other day no longer in the store so they do pull things.
makes me think I should look hard at these sales and make sure I grab anything that might disappear I may one day need.
It would be really cool if there was a sub-category in the store (like fast grab) for items that are going to be removed so we could keep an eye on it and watch for wishlist items making their way into the "ready to be removed" section.
That would cut my purchases by a good 30% at least. I've very rarely returned something except as part of a price protection or a duplicate order, but the fact that I do have that 30 day return policy to fall back on is one of the reasons my average monthly purchases here are double to triple that of the next four stores combined.
All that said, I think people are reading way too much into the whole "clearance" wording. If DAZ is actually going to discontinue some of their DOs, they've had no problem letting us know exactly what's happening in advance prior to the previous store culls. In my experience it's usually the PAs that you have to watch for when it comes to products disappearing unexpectedly.
And, if there WERE to be some culls, there are some that would actually be appreciated. For example, I honestly think that some of the RUNTIME DNA clutter with the multiple bundles inside bundles could stand to be cleaned up.
Does anyone have a list or something of items that have since been vaulted, by any chance?
I'm really curious about that.
