Colonial Fashion's?

anikadanikad Posts: 1,919

What is that when it's at home? Also colonies were not exactly positive things. Not sure it's really a good idea to have a "colony fashion's" sale.

People can use these for their historical or even fantasy art. It's part of history and colonies do exist to this day.

"Colonial" is a period in history. Pretty sure that's what they meant. Wouldn't deem it "bad" or "good", just history. That said, I was expecting some tri-cornered hats and powdered wigs or something.

yep, same here. I'm guessing the Town Crier is supposed to be Paul Revere since the promos kinda look like him. Maybe we'll get a Militia Minuteman figure next.

I hope so and some Eastern Woodlands Peoples. Oh and Virginia Militia from the century before, and farmers from anywhere and anytime.

"Colonial" can simply refers to the time period of British North America, for example, as I interpret the sale. The town crier makes that clear, contextually, in that interpretation. The Regency furniture would reinforce that rough interpration.

Also colonies were not exactly positive things.

That kind of depends upon your point of view, doesn't it?

I think the confusion may be because Americans use colonial to refer to a period of their history. Outside of America it usually refers more generally to one country colonising another which is frowned upon these days. Most of the things in the sale are obviously historical so that must be what they mean, although I'm not sure how you decide a character for Genesis 3 or 8 is colonial.

daz marketing likes to come up with themes for their sales.  and there aren't many other umbrellas you could've (kinda) grouped such an eclectic assortment of releases under.

The subdivision I live in is called the colony, although it's not.

What's weird is why is AQ Jenn for Genesis 3 & 8 Female is dressed in a bikini. How is that part of the theme of this sale?

Ok, good to know it's related to US history but what does Indian jewels, chinese musical instruments and antiques have to do with US "Colonial Fashions"? And why is "Around the World" mentioned if it's just the US? I could understand if this was just a US thing but the around the world thing makes me think of "Empire's and Colonies aka invading other people's countries to put it politely". Especially as India and parts of China were colonies in the past, and it's the 70th Anniversary of Indian independence.  It seems like a very random collection of things under "colonial fashions". Not to mention isn't there a bikini? How the heck does that fit in?

I've stopped trying to figure out why Daz picks the products they do for whatever themed sale they may be running. It's just easier that way ;).

"International History" or "History Around the World" might have been a better choice.

Before our revolution we were a colony of Britain which is a bit more specific than just a 'period in history'.

I really feel for the marketing person(s) at DAZ. With a finite number of new items to choose from EVERY day to showcase DAILY, and to have to come up with a catch phrase, it has to be hell knowing someone on the forums will be nitpicky and take issue with it, LOL. Good thing only a small number of DS users are on the forums.

I'm guessing it's more like, try to find some things that have a bit in common, and then try to come up with a theme. Not easy either way, especially when it seems they cannot use the same them twice, outside of the big three events. (March Madness, PA Festival and PC+ Anniversary, for the two or three people reading this who have yet to hear of those... lol)

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonial_history_of_the_United_States

The colonial history of the United States covers the history of European settlements from the start of colonization in the early 16th century until their incorporation into the United States of America in 1776.

I'm quite familiar with colonial history. I grew up in Virginia, not far from the incidents over the weekend.  There are tons of historic sites from the Colonial Era as well as the Civil War. I had ancestors on the Mayflower. Just buried my grandmother last year at a church that's 400 years old. One of the oldest churches in the country. I have ancestors that fought in every major war in this country, particularly the Revolutionary War. I myself served during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. History is a huge part of my family and where I grew up.

I did notice that it probably should have been Imperialist Fashions Around The World, given the Indian/Chinese products.

If it's Imperialists there should be Paper Tigers. Someone once said that all Imperialists are Paper Tigers.

Thank you for this forum, anikad. Yesterday when I saw this weird sale title, I was so angry that I wanted to start a similar thread, but didn't have the time to do it. To call non-European cultures 'colonial' is insulting, arrogant - and deeply ignorant. If this should be Daz's new tendency, I'll turn my back on this company.

Not to mention that it's confusing, especially to a non-native speaker.
Colony is a Greek word simply meaning settlement and has no original negative meaning. It's the same in Swedish, a colony just means a settlement or simply a gathering of similar structures. So to me this label was not insulting,  simply confusing. Especially as there was very little fashion included. Then again, it's not the first time that happens, and today I just shrug it off and blame the language barrier.

I think we all know that during the centuries, some words faced a dramatic semantic change. E.g., 'idiot' is also a Greek word, originally meaning 'private citizen' - someone who is no longer active in political life. Today it is insulting to call someone an idiot.

Wikipedia's definition of 'colony' is unambiguous: 'A colony is a territory under the immediate political control of a geographically distant state.'

  • The British Empire had colonies in Asia as well as the Americas. I don't understand how this is one whit confusing to anyone. I am surprised Africa just got completely left out.

Think of the positive side of a "Colonial Fashions Sale".  If you don't buy anything, you can create your own Daz nudist colony.

  • ebergerlyebergerly Posts: 3,255

Personally I've been far more offended at the disgusting-looking mutant and the creepy strange octopus-looking characters with human-like bodies, and the never-ending parade of wierd zombies and evil horned creatures. And some people are offended by the "babes" and the constant objectification of women.

I just hope DAZ doesn't close up shop for fear of offending somebody no matter what they do. At least not until the long list of $25+ items in my wishlist go on sale smiley

I think that, yeah, nobody here wants Daz to close up shop. That doesn't mean they don't sometimes have really bad marketing ideas. Fortunately, they seem to learn from threads/reactions like this, so we're contributing to the continuing enlightment and improvement of the world by pointing out when they do these incredibly tacky things, AND helping Daz refine their marketing decisions. Win-win!

  • ebergerlyebergerly Posts: 3,255

Yeah, good point. Maybe we can contribute to the improvement of the world by getting rid of the parade of tacky mutant octopus zombies. I made the mistake of checking out the mutant thread while eating breakfast this morning....big mistake.
