Trying to totally get rid of MSPaint 3D...

RAMWolffRAMWolff Posts: 10,211

There is a command line way of getting rid of the package but it still comes up upon reboot so even after the package has been removed from the system it must have it stored somewhere to call upon it if Windows 10 Creator Edition wants to keep resetting my default image viewer back to it.  The page I got the info is here:

http://winaero.com/blog/remove-uninstall-paint-3d-windows-10/

I then downloaded and installed this registry editor from here:

http://www.snapfiles.com/downloads/eusingregistry/dleusingregistry.html

Still have MSPaint 3D popping up with certain image files so this is just getting ridiculous!

Any help with really scrubbing my system for these unwanted files?

Thanks so much

Richard

...this is just one of many reasons I will never allow W10 on any system I own. They make it a total ordeal to get rid of crap features you don't want. I am not into playing games the way it is and certainly don't care ro do so with an OS.

Pick the image files associated with it and change their association and it shouldn't ever come up again. I run Win 10 and have never had it open on me.

That's not always a solution.  When MSPaint is reassigned to be the default that little "Change" button is not available so I have to go into Settings> Default Programs and choose from there.

PS.  I don't have any other issues besides this one so I have no regrets about upgrading to Windows 10 Creator Edition... I just need this one little issue resolved.  There is a way but I can't find it on my own so I'm asking those that may know or can offer a solution.  I don't want this thread to be a "I hate Windows 10" thing, I want it to remain on tract.  Thanks!

  • I believe there is a script out there called (Windows 10 Lite) that when you orignanally install the Operating system lets you remove the programs you don't want installed even Cortana. It also removes the automatic updates and telemetry. You will have to make a search. This is not a hacked OS it is just a script you run when installing 10 that makes life easier. I don't use 10 I'm sticking with 7pro until they make me upgrade and I mean kicking and scratching and clawing until I have to. Eventually, the tools to stop MS should be mature enough so they are not in my PC snooping. If MS is providing me with the PC then you can have control over what they put on their hardware. I paid for the hardware so I control what is on my PC.

Thanks but the OS is installed and will not reinstall it just to remove a program.  I AM under the impression that the command prompt script I ran did remove the program but a copy must be still kept in some hidden folder that is called up when the system resets to this "default" .... I seem to remember that from a long ways back like Windows 8 or something...

Here's a similar but not quite the same set of instructions: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-completely-remove-paint-3d-windows-10

Did you "run as administrator" and remove the "Edit with Paint 3D" from the context menu? If you didn't, then what happens is that when you open a file that used to be registered to Paint 3D, if the registry information hasn't been removed, Windows 10 simply reaches out to Microsoft, grabs and reinstalls the program so that it can do what it thinks you're asking it to do.

Also, note that you have to remove the registry information for EVERY file type Paint 3D is registered to use, and each of those requires you to go through the registry editing steps every time. Simply uninstalling the program and removing one file type association won't work. (Microsoft is very thorough. In a very annoying way.)

OK.  Followed all the steps including the registry hack so we shall see.  If I right click on any of my image files I'm no longer seeing the option to open with Paint3D so fingers crossed.
