Michael 8 Skin Texture and Shader - Renders

I'm loving Michael 8 so far. Really glad he was released earlier than normal. Going by some comments, his skin doesn't seem to be to some peoples' taste. Must admit, I'm not mad about his skin out of the box either - bumps are so strong they mask some of the details of the skin.

But it's worth remembering that you can play around with the surface and shader settings to come up with some very different results.

Each of these renders were done using the same lighting and render settings. The figure on the left of each is M8 with default skin and default shader. On the right is M8 with default skin, but with a lot of tweaks and changes to the surface shader settings. It's not better than the original (and still needs some work), but it is different and more suitable for me.

I'd love to see how others are tweaking the default skin.

Your version looks better in these shots, for sure. :)

  • Interesting. He actually looks older with the modified shader settings compared to the default.

That's especially noticable on his neck in your profile comparision shot. Almost looks like he has a skin rash. smiley

Great job on the shader tweaks!

  • Your version definely looks better. It especially minimizes the rather obvious difference in the detail on his face and neck. I do hope you plan to share you settings?

Well I honestly can't say one looks better than the other. They look the same to me - the original looks like it is January and he has had no sun for a few months and the custom one looks like it is summer and he has been outside a bunch.

And that's really great because one wants to be able to adjust the characters they have such that it still looks like the same character but at equivalent model and render quality so then one sees that one is pale from winter based on the environment in the scene, Holiday Nook scene for example, and the other is tanned from summer based on the environment in the scene, Harpwood Trails scene for example.

I wish DS had a UI to enable such adjustments intuitively as I have to guess as I really have trouble remembering what all those surfaces settings does.

Ooh, I like your shader pics, Ildanach! They seem to give his skin more depth. The shadows and shading are beautiful.
