Shaders

I managed to change the "Wandering Monk" texture and color to the preset "Crusader Linen". I did it by selecting the jacket in the scene tab and then applying the texture fro the menu on the right.
However I can not get it to work on the "Wandering Monk" Trousers. Now it doesn't seem to work for the other shaders. Seems I lucked out and got the procedure correct the first time but am doing some incorrectly now. What is the correct procedure for applying shader presets to various items?
Also, what is the difference between a shader and a shader baker?

Select the item in the scene tree and select the surface itself (material zone) under the surfaces tab, and the shader should apply.
I thought that is what I was doing. However the shades do not change. What's wrong with this picture :-)?
Most Shaders will not Show in the Viewport you need a Render to see the Effect or a Spot Render. They are a 3Delight render thing and the Viewport is OpenGL it can not show them properly.
Also, make sure you have the surfaces you want to change on the item selected, as well as the item itself. Materials presets work on named surfaces and so just need the item selected but shader presets need to be told both the item and the surface to affect.
So maybe that is what I am missing. I am selecting the item but I am not sure I have properly selected the "surface" How do i select the surface?
I tried the render solution. The jacket changed but the trousers did not. Same as what it was doing in the viewer.
Maybe this will help.
Perfect. T
Thanks
Second question, What is the differences between a shader and a shader baker?
I purchased DAZ Studio Environment Shaders but they don't show up with the other shaders. How can I get these and other shaders to show up with the other shaders?
Shader Baker takes whatever materials you have applied to your surface, and turns those into 1 bitmap per material zone selected to the UVS of the model.
