Would there be problems if I moved my "My Daz 3D Library" to another drive?

Trying to free up some space on my hard drive. Would there be problems if I moved my "My Daz 3D Library" to another drive? As long as I change the locations within the program? And is that where Daz itself downloads to? It's where I put all my rendrosity purchases, so if not, I'd love to be able to move all daz content somewhere else..

  • DS would work, assuming you are using 4.9.x.x or later (4.8 stored absolute paths in the database). DIM defaults to that folder, so you'd need to update its installation paths too (click the gear icon, then go to the Instalaltion tab and click + to add the new folder, after which you can select it and remove the old from the list). DIM, however, does store the absolute location of the files it installs - in the .dsx files in the Manifests folder - so you may have issues uninstalling or updating content installed with DIM (you can tell DIM to install updates to the current directory, instead of the location of the old installation, but there will still be issues where an update does not use one of the original files).

I'm on the most current Daz, so good there..that last bit sounds a bit ominous. I suppose if something didn't work, I could re-download the file? Do you think it'd be a common problem? I'd hate to have to re-download everything I bought to the new drive after this..

It worked fine for me...just cut and paste the entire folder to my new drive, then changed the default locations in content manager.  Np.

This worked fine for me too. DAZ Studio worked fine, but as Richard said DIM wouldn't read the manifests even though the download path had been changed. There may be a solution for that, but since my library isn't that large I just deleted it and re-installed.

Hmm, not sure what that means. Does this lead to problems when creating or downloading? I have a fairly large library and would hate to have to re-load everything..

  • My comment on manifests was that they say the content iss till isntalled in the old location, so if an update gets rid of or renames a file DIM won't be able to find the old file to remove it and you will end up with a possible conflict.

You can move the Manifests folder, but you have to manually edit the C:\Users\YOU\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\InstallManager\UserAccounts\Account.ini file (in a text editor) to add the new location, with / as the folder separator, to the

    OverrideManifestDir=

    line.

The Manifest issue won't be a common problem. In fact, you will probably not notice anything.

Remember paths need to change in both DIM and the Content manager in Studio

That's good to know. whew. Thanks! And yes, I will change the paths in both Daz studio and DIM after I move everything..

  • I have ny daz library on an external drive and have no problems

    @Richard Haseltine

Is the file location encoded in the Manifest (.dsx) file as  <ProductFileGuid VALUE= ?. Otherwise I don't see any paths in any of the .dsx files.

  • I'm not sure - I got into a mess trying to edit the metadata .dsx fiels and have avoided doing anything to them since. (Well, mostly.)

  • Suggestion: Pin this topic before it gets pushed down too far! It's sure to be one of the most common questions as our product libraries bloat into the thousands. I just logged in with a nearly identical question. Thank you!

Are you sure you were looking in the manifests folder, not the Downloads folder (which also has a .dsx file for each product zip, but serving a diffrent purpose)

The files in the manifest folder has; UserInstallPath VALUE=  ; immediately followed by the install path in quotes.

Don't seem to have a Manifests folder. Long ago moved Studio installation off my C: drive, put my content on an external drive. Do have an Install Manager folde in my Users/Appdata/Roaming folde but no manifests.

Given that my Studio installation is very stable AND I don't have the update or content problems that some folks have. I'll just leave this alone.

The default Manifests folder is in the Public Documents/Daz Install Manager folder (or whatever it's called, I've moved mine)

And so it is. Seems like an odd place but things are working and the total size is small.

I always rename the content folder for every project so I'm used to it. But I only use manual install so I don't know about DIM issues. For me it works fine. The only issue is that, after changing the content folder and of course updating the preferences, the first time I save something new I have to teach DAZ Studio where the new folder is. Then the next time DAZ Studio will remember it.

What steps would you suggest for someone using 4.7?

The older versions do use absolute paths in their database, so moving the content diectory will cause a problem. Fortunately DS does have a simple fix, though since I don't have a pre-4.9 build my description will be strictly from memory. If you find a missing asset icon and right-click theer should, directly or in a sub-menu, be an option to update paths - that will open a dialogue in which you can set the new location of the content diectory, and there's a check-box to update all content using the same old path to the same new path.

that will open a dialogue in which you can set the new location of the content diectory

I guess that would be perfect to fix the issue I reported above, when you change the content folder in 4.9.

No, it isn't in 4.9 since 4.9 no longer stores the locations of the content diectory in the database, just the relative path within the content directory. That's why I couldn't check the names of the command and labels in the dialogue.
