Clothing makers - freelance job opening
Hello all -
I have a possible freelance job available for someone who is adept at making clothing for DAZ figures.
I am a comic book artist, and I use DAZ figures for reference in a majority of my work. The problem is finding good clothing for the characters who aren't wearing some kind of tights. I don't draw superheroes, per se - the comic is near-future sci fi - so I need real-world type clothes most often, and it is very difficult to find exactly what I need with what is commercially available. I would like to hire someone who can make convincingly realistic-looking custom clothing. We would obviously need to discuss payments/rates - I think there are a lot of options, depending on if the model-maker would want to make the resulting clothing available commercially or not.
If interested, please message me here, with some images of clothes that you have made, and we can discuss further.
Thanks!
(I don't know if this is the right forum for this - if I should move it to another category, please let me know.)

Clothing for what generation of models??
V4 ,genesis 1,2,3,,or 8??
I use a lot of different generations. I find that M4/V4 are the best in terms of using morphs to create interesting character faces, and I find Genesis to be the most versatile for body morphs. But I'm willing to adapt if I find someone who has a preference for something different.
I should add that this is an ONGOING job - not a one-and-done kind of thing. The comic is currently on issue #27, and we intend to continue for the foreseeable future. I have been drawing comics professionally, full-time, for over 25 years. If I can establish a good working relationship with someone, I would have work available for as long as you want to keep doing it.
I don't have the right skills for this, but it might help some other people to decide if you post a couple of pictures of your comic so they have an idea of what you are looking for.
if you are using them for photo reference why can't you draw the clothes? just wondering
Everyone has different methods. But, this is a posting for a job, not a discussion of art methods.
There is no particular thing that I need. What I am looking for on this issue may be something completely different from what I need for the next issue. For example, I currently need to dress some figures in the kinds of coats and hats that commercial fishermen in the North Sea would wear. In the next issue, I will be needing military uniforms that I will design. I have needed everything from full storm-trooper-like body armor to expensive-looking ball gowns to the kinds of dirty, ragged clothes a homeless person might wear. Once someone contacts me who is interested in the job, I will send more information about the comic and myself (though based on my screen name it wouldn't be hard to figure out with a simple Google search).
I have to ask, are you expecting that a single outfit will cost hundreds of dollars just to match minimum wage on the time?
I have to be a bit of a dampener here, sadly money is the talker when you hope to hire competent and talented artists. To make it worth while for the artist you'll have to either A) authorize them to sell the clothes commercially as well as giving them a bit of an Up Front payment for the work (and the only things that are going to sell here at Daz are going to be Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 items - so you'll need to start using the newest generation of figures in that scenario). Or B) if you want older figure clothes made (older than Genesis 3) you'll likely have to pay the artist at least minimum wage (as agent unawares pointed out) for the many hours of work that goes into each article of clothing as it will be unlikely that the artist will be able to either sell the clothes here at Daz or sell them at the "other place" at a high enough rate to make back their time/money
I know that's crappy news, and I'm sorry to be the bearer of it. I just wanted to be realistic about what you can expect. Having said that though, you MIGHT be able to find someone who is just starting out at making 3D content who wouldn't mind teaming up with you for the practice who would work for less because they aren't "pro level" yet. Just a thought. :)
Again, I'm sorry if that's bad news. I wish you lots of luck in finding the right person to team up with! And I hope your comic is quite successful! :)
I was just thinking something similar earlier. While it would be kind of neat to have a community working on commissions (and perhaps selling the models in a store afterwords for anyone to be able to pick up)
The question becomes: If someone was good enough to make quality products, why would they make what 1 person wanted instead of what they wanted (adding in- knowing what sells) and put there stuff up on here for sale?
I would suggest, because you seem to have various needs, that instead of commissioning pieces, which would begin to run into several hundreds of dollars very quickly, that you look at kit bashing. Find someone who can look at items available in the store that can 1) kitbash from different items, 2) can edit existing items, 3) can create whatever few things you may need to round out your kitbashed outfits.
If you are rendering and using what you render, the more you need to have everything there in the 3D items. If you are rendering and painting and/or manipulating the final render, the less accurate you need to be because you can just adjust the art.
I would seriously reconsider full out commission. My suggestion will also be much faster.
+1 This is great advice. And you'll have to consider how many clothing items you'll need for each issue and how long each clothing item takes a single artist to produce. So if you need several different outfits in a short amount of time you're looking at commissioning more than one artist to get them done in the time frame you need them in. I think Cris is right, you'll probably be better off kit bashing different outfits. Also, don't thumb your nose at Freebies - there are a TON of freebie clothing items for V4/M4, Genesis, and even some for the newer figures as well and many allow people to use them in commercial renders.
I suggest starting at Wilmap's site (she has a TON of great freebie clothing): https://www.wilmapsdigitalcreations.co.uk/introduction.php
And the poser/daz freebies wiki: https://poserdazfreebies.miraheze.org/wiki/Figures
There's also ShareCG and Renderosity for freebies, as well as a couple other websites you can probably find via Google. :)
Yeah, I looked up what a North Sea Commercial fisherman typically wears and you'd need to pay about $4500 or more to get that professionally modeled, rigged, and textures or you could pay $200 and likely much less plus the cost of having someone competantly retexture the DAZ Store clothing so that they were 'good enough to repurpose' for the style needed in your comic.
eg there are several styles of overalls, dungarees, firemen's uniforms to conceivably have pieces of those products re-textured as wellies and waders and so on.
Then I'd buy VWD & the VWD bridge for DAZ to have the DAZ clothing you bought draped to look nice in your comic illustrations.
Another thing I recommend.
Don't lock yourself into unique designs that may be difficult to reproduce. Be flexible. Look at items, purchasable and free, that can be changed to attain different looks when used with other pieces. Look at how textures can transform the look of a 3D model. Need holes, midriff exposed? You can render with and without clothing and composite to look as you need. Renders, when planned out well, can help you with fabric movement, pulls and many other things. Don't expect your models to provide you with everything you need. Be creative or find someone that is.
Your limits are really only in what your imagination or hired help/colleagues cannot do.
Hello, I wish I could help you, someday maybe. ^^
But I'd really like to see what your comic book looks like. :)
