Morphs between gen 2, 3, 8

OK, I bought the pro version of M8 so I got all the earlier versions. My question is, if I buy the basic shaping morphs for, say, G3 male, can I use those with the g8 male, or do i have to buy all the basic body and face morphs for all the different genesis males?

Also, do I need those basic morphs to use other characters (e.g., with M4 you often needed morphs++ to be able to use a specific character you bought).

I know that I can get genx to carry over morphs from genesis up through, I think, gen 3. So I am in part wondering if I should just do that and skip the basic morph packs for michael 5, 6 and 8.

Honestly, I am trying to get my head around this morph thing. Because I used genesis ages ago and saved everything, I have a ton of morphs that work with genesis, but I am not sure they will work with anything afterwards, and while those pro sets were free I realize I could just focus on, say, M7 and 8 or even just m8, but I like the basic face on M6.

I am also unclear what it means that M8 is backward compatible since I have been hearing that he cannot take the textures of earlier versions and also cannot use the hair or clothes of earlier versions--or am I mistaken?

I don't want to buy a lot of crap I don't need, but I would also like to be able to use these figures that I now have.

Any advice appreciated and PMing me is fine too.

THanks,

Choppski

    You'll need the base shaping morphs for each generation for THAT generation I'm afraid (Michael 6 would use Genesis 2 male shaping morphs, Michael 7 would use Genesis 3 shaping morphs, etc). They don't go between figure generations. You can still use the Michael of each generation without them though, but you won't be able to really customize without them.

    But do I need them if I buy a character created for that version?

    You will if the character calls for them (IOW, if the vendor used some of them in the creation of their character). Whether or not you need them is usually listed in the requirements for a character on the product page.

    That all depends on whether or not the character uses a custom morph or is dial spun. Custom morphs do not require any additional packs to work. But dial spin characters are just presets for the base head, body and expression morphs and so will not work without them. Well, the textures would work but not the rest of the character and I assume you want the shape too. You need to read the description carefully for any required products in addition to the base. Some characters have both a custom morph and dial presets. Those will give you a similar look to what it's supposed to be like, but you won't get the exact look unless you have all the listed parts, i.e the head & body morphs.

    For instance, this guy I just bought needs nothing other than the Michael 7 base. https://www.daz3d.com/russell-hd-for-michael-7 ;

    His textures are based on the Genesis 3 UV maps and not the unique M7 ones. That means they can be used on any other figure that accepts Genesis 3 Male based maps.

    Keep in mind, though, that the older generation products go on sale with deep discounts from time to time. If you are a PC+ member, there is the 30% member discount on DOs, which the base morphs are. And that 30% stacks with other discounts. If you're not in a hurry to add those morph packs to your toolbox, you can get them for a very reasonable price. I expect we'll see some really good sales on older generation stuff between now and the end of the year.

    Thanks for the feedback. It helps--especially the reminder about the PC discount. I bought a membership because not only was it essentially free if I bought the pro package but the overall cost actually went DOWN when I added it. They sure now how to suck someone in with deals like that!
