Clothing creation question

Hey guys,
I've been trying to figure out the easiest way to create clothing for characters. I know Hexagon is an option, and there is a clothing creation tutorial you can buy. Has anyone watched it?

I see there is also a "Morph Designer 3.0" that looks like it might be for clothing? And also the Genesis Basic Clothing Rig Kit. If anyone has used any of these or has some opinions or advice, please let me know. Some of the clothing I have in mind will be simple, one-layer stuff, but for another character I'll want multi-layered clothing (shirt, coat, etc).

Thanks for your help

Modelling clothing is an art form...there are a few videos on YouTube on modelling clothing to a figure. Personally, I like geekatplay for Hexagon.

Basically, you fit the mesh close to the body. Start with something simple like what I did here: http://www.sharecg.com/v/66930/view/21/DAZ-Studio/wc-Sarong

Running through the beginning tototrials on Geekatplay is what got me comfortable in Hex even after Rhino ruined me to Polygon modelling... now I feel like a complete noob as opposed to a completely hopeless noob... :)

I agree, it's well worth working through some Geekatplay tutorials just to get familiar with the interface. That's what I did, then got Fugazi's tutorials once I knew my way around. They are very good tutorials and fun to work through. They will help you make straightforward clothing that can be used by all Genesis characters. I think multi-layered clothing is more ambitious, but if you'd rather make it than buy it then I'm sure with determination and skill most things are possible. :)

Well, I'd be happy to buy clothing if it was exactly what I was needing. But I probably won't be able to find some things, so I figured in the long run it's just something I'll have to learn how to do, then I can share it with others. The multi-layered clothing will be for a cowboy. I bought some cowboy clothing already, so I may use some of that. But I want him to wear a jacket and a shirt, at least, and possibly a vest over his shirt. I'll just see how it goes. =)

ADVICE: when you model ANYTHING for Genesis, keep it as LOW POLY as possible!!!!!!!!! I cannot stress this enough. DAZ Studio LOVES Low Poly!!!

Um.. you mean with subdivision layers? Because DAZ hates low poly if boobs are in any way involved.

That's true, but you can fix that by tesselation of local polygons and and push modifiers.

I find it easier to start off with a low poly model, then add a level of smoothing (in Hex) when reguired, either to add more detail or in the case of clothes to make it fit better.

If anyone is reading this and wants to try their hand at modeling look at these video tutorials - CGdreams (Danny's site and the ones sold here), GeekAtPlay and for clothes SilentlySpoken - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfrWziNUOsU. I got most of Fugazi's tutorials and learnt to make clothing that way. He is very easy to understand and he teaches you lots of tricks and tips.

Now I can't stop! I love making things for Genesis and have loads of everyday clothes on ShareCG.

I don't think any single one of the girls on my runtime have not worn something of Wendy's...

I've used Wendy's goodies as well. She gets better all the time and it's been fun watching her improve her rigging and sculpts.

I forgot to add that I do have the Genesis Basic Rig for clothing. It's for long dresses, long skirts and long coats, basically anything that you need to work properly below the knee. In the right hands (not yet mine) it's said to be very helpful. But I'm not sure how useful it would be for cowboy outfits. You might find Sickle Yield's new rigging product is what you need, worth checking out in any case.

Edit: LOL I didn't know SY herself had joined the thread while I was typing. Well she's a good place for all things rigging when you get to that stage. :)

I'm always up for helping people with their learning process. I like having them buy my stuff, too, but the Basic Rig is a good set. It works quite well for many below-waist-length items, and those that are shorter than this don't really require a template or rig base a lot of the time. This skirt tutorial was made in an earlier version of DS4, but it's still a good intro to making your own handles, if you should end up wanting to do that.

Thanks Sickle Yield, I'll take a look through that (as well as persevere with creating a better dress model to use with the Basic Rig). There's a lot to learn all at once when you're a beginner, and things like bones and weight-mapping seem daunting at first. But I'm discovering you're a helpful bunch, and I'm always happy to buy from helpful people as well as soak up free advice. :)

That's not a very good advert for my things though wancow!!!

That was made for a laugh, so your girls wouldn't go around naked all the time.:-)
