Naming Suggestion for PAs
I do most of my DAZ shopping on an iPhone 6s+, which means the displayed product titles are generally truncated. For example a couple of today's new products are "Phx Cameron for M..." and "Lord of the Bears T..."
I'm not buying Genesis 8 content yet, so I scroll right by that stuff. Twice recently I've ended up learning on the forums that something interesting supported Genesis 3 and even Genesis 2 after totally ignoring those items in the product listings.
Because so many people are using their phones to conduct shopping these days, it might be a good idea to name products like "G3,8M Snazzy Boots" or "FWSA G8 Philippa" in order to state the product's compatibility as early as possible in the name so it won't be cut off on small screens. After all, if a shopper sees the pic of a pair of boots she likes, the G3,8 part is vastly more important than knowing they were named 'snazzy'." The names are important for discussing products here in the fora, but almost completely irrelevent in terms of convincing shoppers to click on them.
Failing this, perhaps DAZ could develop some small but easily recognizable, color-coded '1', '2', '3', and '8' badges you could include in your promo icon.
Comments
If the promo image gets my attention, I usually click on it to see the rest of them, which will give the essential information.
Especially since I use the alphabetized product list in Daz Studio to find my products when building a scene, adding any more of a code prefix than we already have will make it even harder to find what I'm looking for,
Okay, then the badges. Surely there is some solution. It would be nice if DAZ would recode the site to add extra room between the rows of icons and avoid truncating long titles, but adding the compatibility badges is something PAs could do right away instead of waiting for DAZ to act.
DAZ uses an existing e-commerce solution (Magento) to handle the storefront.
You seem to be suggesting DAZ's coders have no control over the presentation of items in the product lists. If that were true, how would the "new" badge appear on new products?
That's a function of the store software. DAZ sets the value of the "new" flag on the product to true, and the software adds the banner.
I don'tt hink we know the details of how particular functions are implemented - it's Magento, but to the best of my knowledge Magento allows various forms of customisation and the use of plug-ins.
As for the original suggestion, this is a user-to-user forum - if you want to make the suggestion to daz you really need to open a Support ticket https://www.daz3d.com/help/help-contact-us
Good point, what I wrote is one of the usual ways of doing this with Magento but they might have implemented it differently.
Naming conventions, with the generations of figures, will always have Genesis 3 Male, Genesis 8 Male, Genesis 3 Female, etc. That is how they have to be set up with whatever else is within the naming of the product. Them's the rules. Usually the name of the product will go in front of the naming convention of the generation according to the PA, but the generational naming convention itself and how it's presented is something that is S.O.P. (Standard Operating Proceedure) for us.
And yet: https://www.daz3d.com/project-hairy-456-for-daz-studio
In that product, the name is a statement of compatibility.
But we moved on from talking about names to the idea of putting a tiny 8, 3, 2 in the product icon as a badge, so the compatibility will be visible no matter what the name is.
DAZ could do a lot better with the names for lookup within Studio, as well.
If I'm searching for a character named "Jenna", I'm not going to start with the "A"s.
Yet there she is - AQ Jenna.
I love your tagline. I first read it in "Bil, the Galactic Hero" describing a Drill Sergeant:
"He has the heart of a small child. In a jar. On his desk."
There's a way to filter the products by generation even on the phone :) You can select the figures you want the products to show. It's pretty useful, have you seen it? You can select V4, G, G2F, G2M, etc. Mark all the ones you want and only those will show up.
Daz does not allow us to use abbreviations in product titles or indeed products themselves. In fact, PAs' desire to do so is a frequent point of complaint from Daz. IIRC Smart Content can't read them when it's categorizing an item for its sorting.
