When I try to run the program, I get this error: Error while unpacking program, code 2.
Looking it up, it seems the two options are either uninstall security updates, or "upgrade" (more like downgrade) to service pack 2 which is a disaster.
PLease tell me this is still usable???? :(

Well, I don't know where you got the idea that Service Pack 2 is a disaster. There may have been problems when it first came out but I ran Vista for 5 years and got all the interim updates and completed them with service pack 2 and had no problems. You would have to identify a specific problem with SP2 and whether you would personally be effected and whether or not it had been already addressed.
I didn't buy it, so don't know if this would work.
I managed to skip Vista, on W7 which has similar security features, for the older programs I've found installing them to their very own program folder OUTSIDE of the official program folders can help. If this can be done on Vista, deinstall the program first, then reinstall to the new folder.
Install as Admin, and sometimes one needs to turn off the AV when installing programs. [just remember to turn AV back on before connecting back to the 'Net!]
Well installing in a different area didn't work, nor did running as admin, so finally installing the updates to SP2, taking over 12 hours so far apparently >_< sheesh
hopefully it works, thanks all!
Oh I hate it when it goes that slowly. I hope it works out for you too.
If it doesn't, CS.
manual installation didn't work, but every time i restart my computer in the last 3 days its found another set up updates in the update manager.... and after several downloads and restarts in update manager, its now installing sp2!!! I hope it works finally!
