I'll be getting a nice tax return shortly, and want to start using Aiko and Hiro 3, what are the best items, sets, whatever to really get things going? And I am willing to spend a few hundred dollars, I might add, but finding any deals/bargains will be appreciated.

    The answer is, it depends.

What style are you interested in? Realistic, anime, toon...?

Are you interested in fantasy, sci-fi, modern, period or something else?

What is the goal for your art? For example, will you be creating professional illustrations, hobby art, a comic strip, a graphic novel, animations....?

Is there a reason you want to go with Aiko 3 and Hiro 3? As much as I love them (and still use them), don't expect the third generation characters to get much love in the future. Even the fourth generation (Aiko 4 and Hiro 4) are being neglected in favor of Genesis (gen 5.) The big advantage of Genesis is that the clothes you buy can be shared between characters. For example, Aiko 5 and Hiro 5 can wear the same outfits. That can save huge $$$.

Will you be using mostly Daz Studio or Poser? If you decide to use Genesis, it works best with Daz Studio. Not all genesis products will work in Poser.

Will your art focus on just the characters or will you need lots of environment items, too?

Are you a platinum club member? Members have access to thousands of $1.99 items. You might want to browse through the PC items to see if it is worthwhile for you to join. http://www.daz3d.com/platinum-club-items

To get started you might want to buy a few items at a time and fill in with freebies. In addition to the freebies you can find in the Daz forums, there are lots of freebies at places like ShareCG and Renderosity.

You might also look through some of the galleries and forum threads for inspiration. Unfortunately, most of the Aiko 3 and Hiro 3 stuff is in the old archived forums which are kind of hard to browse through.

Once you provide a bit more info I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions, such as some bundles that might work for you. Good luck and happy rendering!

I think Aiko 3 is a limited edition here (no morphs),but Hiro 3 is a full figure. Or the other way around.

There is also a bunch of freebies:

    To answer:

    Anime and toon
    sci-fi and fantasy
    Comics/graphic novels
I don't mind older models, I am not going to use some new stuff simply because the fact it's new
I got Daz 3 right now
    Characters and enviroments
What's a platinum gonna cost me to join?

Aiko19 is a character morph for A3, she is supposed to be a grown up version of A3:

The Platinum Club costs depend upon whether you decide on monthly or annual membership. Monthly is a $29.95 start up fee which includes your first month and then $7.95 per month after that. Annual is $99 for the first year and then $69 to renew after the first year.

Before you join, read all the TOS carefully. Certain policies, payment methods, and how DAZ handles renewals and cancellations of membership have changed in the past six months. If you have any questions, submit a ticket through Zen Desk.

Everything in the two ultimate bundles are useable in DS3 out of the box.

Any of the characters by Thorne and Sarsa are a good choice imho.

Do check out the freebie list posted above. Sadly a lot of good items are long gone since A3 and H3 are now 7 or 8 years old.

Keep in mind that they are an older technology so when it may take a little extra time to get them to look more realistic.

Little tip for bending the buttock and Leg joint in Gen3 characters: Do the majority of the bend in the buttock and the rest in the leg and you will avoid that odd fold in the mesh. To see what I mean by odd fold, ust bend the leg.

And if you feel like it, take a look at the Gen3 Aiko and Hiro Appreciation Thread to see renders:

Realistic is not a priority, a bit like a cartoon character look is fine. And I've handled Victoria 3 in the past, so I know about the buttocks thing, but thanks anyhow. :D

To make things a bit easier to describe, here's what I am going for. These were made by someone I know and talk to occasionally and he made some terrific images and comics. Here's a few of his stuff. Oh, and don't ask me to post the rest, he never got to finish the comic, yet plus it had a few naughty scenes in it too, hahaha XD

If someone could point out the hairs that were used on the pages, as well as the boots that the girl crewmen wore that would help. I have my own Trek comics planned and want to give it a real anime feel.

    Thanks. :D

That one I have, should have mentioned it earlier, my bad. XD It's the other ones I was asking about mainly. And any good ways to make Star Trek uniforms? Both TOS and TNG?

I tracked down the blue hair - it's not available anymore ... Manga Hair for Hiro at Poserpros (a shop that was bought up by Daz and doesn't exist anymore):

    Klingon uniform

P.S. I don't think you will find other than free items for Star Trek - and not for commercial use, for obvious reasons. ;)

My comic's just a simple amateur, non-profit little thing I want to do, so commercial use is not a biggy concern for me.

They outta bring that discontinued hair back, I really liked that one, I am sure the site could make a few bucks off that one. :)

Many people would disagree with me, but if I were starting now using Daz Studio, I'd get the 4.5 version and focus on Genesis characters because it is so easy to morph them to different looking characters and because you can share all of the clothing items among the different characters, including using many of the Gen 4 clothing items without any problems.

But if you really want to stick with the Gen 3 characters there are LOTS of freebies you can use to get started and then decide what to spend money on as the need arises.

Here are some freebies lists from the General Freepository. Not all of them will still be available. Check the terms of usage--usually personal renders are okay, but some may want credit.

    Aiko 3 Freebies

    Hiro 3 freebies

    Star trek Freebies

    Dr Who freebies

    Anime freebies

    Hair freebies

I'm not trying to push you toward platinum club. some love it, some don't find it worth their while (especially if they've been members for a long time and have most of the content!) In addition to the $1.99 platinum club items, you also get a monthly coupon code for $6 off non-platinum club Daz Originals.

Here is a link to the Daz Original sci-fi items (including $1.99 platinum club items) or here is a link for just the $1.99 PC sci-fi items. The clothes that would work for A3 or H3 are towards the back, but the environments and space craft would work great.

Yes, Aiko 3 is the one that needs the Morphs and Maps package, and Hiro 3 is complete in the zip file on cNet.

If you like the anime look but prefer Fujishima to Takahashi, you might be interested in BelBel. She's a standalone character that was designed to be able to wear all of Aiko 3's wardrobe.
    http://www.daz3d.com/belbel

Then there's BelBel's "little sister" ChibiBel, who is a stand-alone character (not an A3 morph).

I maintain a freebie list for her, too.

Good advice if one is using a brand-new computer. If one's stuck with a Pentium PC running XP, one should stick with Studio 3 and the low-poly Generation 3 figures.

Most folks will be between those extremes, of course.

    Aiko 3 Freebies

    Hiro 3 freebies

I remove "dead" links from these two lists whenever anyone points them out (or I discover them myself). I can't speak for the maintainers of the other lists.
