Guys, I hope you realize how huge this is. For me, let's just say it's like this: Pretend you're a worker at NASA, and Captain Kirk hands you the keys to the Enterprise and tells you she's your new car...

The OpenSubDiv website is here; http://graphics.pixar.com/opensubdiv/

But there's a 30 minute presentation that talks about a lot of the features of OpenSubDiv: http://vimeo.com/55032699

So, DAZ has just completely validated my faith in the company. I didn't think we'd get this till D|S6 at the earliest (considering Poser still hasn't even got SubDivs at all... even though it's been around since 1999).

Now, how much of it has been implemented remains to be seen, and what kind of modeller we'll need to be able to take advantage of it also remains to be seen (Hexagon 3, maybe?)

Anyway, I just wanted to say: THANK YOU DAZ!!! You guys rawk!

If I am correct, it wont be a modeler that requires anything special to it. The OpenSubdiv in DS is what you want as it will do a far greater job at sub dividing the mesh and the mesh can be a lot less detailed.

it's true, but Matty, I would think you'd need to be able to define things like edge creasing in a modeler. I may be wrong on that, of course :)

But in that video: http://vimeo.com/55032699 fast forward to Minute 23 to see how AMAZING it is when fully implemented... featuring Ptex as well...

The first thing I noticed is speed primarily, the other benefits may come once PTEX textured models become available, which cater for OpenSubDiv directly. Keep in mind though that the preview functionality of DAZ Studio still remains as bad as it was, so this fancy preview you won't see.

that's okay. I can survive without the fancy preview. I imagine we'll eventually get that. The main thing I want to see is edge creasing and lower tesselation on the flat areas. That's huge.
