I have used a variety of different Materials in this room:- Wooden floor, fur rug and pillow, Linen Pillow, Suede Seat.

I would like to improve the lighting to show off the textures.

Question: I am not a new user... I am more of a returning oldy who is relearning Daz 4.. is it still ok to participate? I think I might be a bit overqualified, maybe. Not sure, though

I'm really not a 'new user' in computer graphics either, so I was wondering the same thing. I would think, with so much to learn, you would be welcome to add your qualifications to the group.

I find, to have people here who are not absolute beginner's is a big help. In the beginning I entered this thread with the ambition to win sometimes a price, but the longer I'm in, this reason becomes even more and more minor.

Now it's more the fun to see how other starts her pictures and do sometimes very cool things. To read their problems and how they solf them, helps me left to get a better understanding how DAZ works. Yes, to win a price is fun, but it's even nice to commend things, make proposals and give some help and ideas.

And so, someone who has a little bit more experience, can help to solve problems even faster.

Yepp the whole HDD was lost, but it does nothing to mourn over spilled milk, so here is a totally fresh start.

The scale of the gras is intentional, yes. A trick from old kaiju movies. ;) To be honest, at first I wanted to make the grass even bigger. XD

Yeah the wings, are a thing I'm not satisfied with right now. Maybe I make them emissive instead. I have four wing surfaces on each side and those tendrill thingys with the golden sparks on it. So a lot room to play with. With the frosted dress, the skirt looked so much cooler, b/c of the two different tints of those clothes. But now, I think yeah, maybe I could change the tint give it some oomph back. And I really like the effect of frosted surfaces. We will see, what the future brings.

Also I think of bringing some DoF into the picture. As anyone can see, it is the first attemp on the theme so it is somewhat of concept art. ;)

Ohh Daybird you dumbass (facepalm to myself).

I have totally overlooked, that she is a elf, even as I made comment about her wings... *gg*
In that case, the gras looks perfect.
I think old guys, like me need some hints, like a big shoe beside her *hrhr*

So I fiddled a bit with the shader mixer and got a big headache. This thing and MDL ain't my cup of tea right now. So instead I tried something else. A surface with a attached geometry shell. I like how easy it is to work with. Here is my current state of WiP. Currently I experient with different bases and look how the frost layer above will turn out.

And Daybird, don't be too harsh to yourself. ;) Today I mixed two different customers up and gave them the wrong exchange money. Stuff like this happens to all of us, this makes us humans. :)

They all look nice style, but I find the Organza the neatest, maybe a little less opacity, but thats more a personal taste.

Nice to see your work here, Sueya. The wood textures show really nicely under the bright lights. I like the different textures on throw pillows on the couch. Maybe angling the lighting a little might bring out those a little better?

Next iteration of Shyra and kids... yes, they're barefoot in the snow. No, I'm not sure about that big light in the sky. Yes, yes, I feel a lot more comfortable working with Epic God Rays now. And no, I'm not sure what I'm going to do about Mr. Goblar's truncated chest stump. I think there may need to be a billow of bilious clouds from which he is rising..This is only about 20 percent converged after 13 hours - largely because I rendered it much larger to try to bring in all the details I could, then had to shrink it to upload it to the forum. Open to suggestions, advice and comments, of course.

Cyborg, Edward Scissor Hands Orc.  Terrific!  You've really got an imagination.  Only thing that threw me off was red lights to the left of him.  They are part of the other guy's arm?

I'm probably OCD when it comes to camera angles & things getting hidden IRL, so hopefully the following won't some off as me being picky. : )

If you moved the table to left, rest of her foot wouldn't be covered up.  If you raised the camera up a bit & tilted it down... All of her hands would be in the picture.  Then you could put a magazine or something on the table, maybe raise her head up as needed to still be looking at the camera, and...   Well all your subject would be in the 'photo' and the table still in there as foreground, but not covering anything up.  Hope that makes sense.. : )

Might be silly observation, or I can't tell on a 4k monitor because renders always look small.

Shadows or something to emphasize flying & height above ground?  Very difficult to see where her shoe ends & the ground frosty ground begins.

Does that make sense?  First time commenting on others' work, so a bit uncertain about it.  Don't want to come off as nit-picky.  : )

Be very interested on where you go with this one!  Like how Shyra appears to be shielding the children or 'wee folk.'   Not exactly clear what sort of apparition the big light is, or the other two figures.  Then again, I'm looking at it on 4k monitor, so renders seem small.  Maybe I'm missing some obvious details.  I tend to do that sometimes-- overlook the obvious.  wink

    Here's revision three I think.

Thanks to Chameo for sunglasses & transparency tips & pointing out "Monique 7" was in shadows.  That gave me the idea to have the culprit (who put sugar in car's gas tank) to be off to the side watching them.  Tend to do stuff like that in comic books. ; )

Is it me, or "Garrett's" skin still looks plastic compared to the others?

Attaching full rez file if anyone wants to see more of the details.  (yes, Darius' left hand is clipping into car)

    Enjoy weekend!

Oh, and thanks everyone, for comments about the cat btw... Can never tell what people are going to pick up on!  Still think a cat would have guard hair & more detail on tail for example.  Maybe not possible unless future purchases are LAMH compliant?  Am also learning the lingo for various products.  Thanks to Barbult for suggestion.

This is getting really interesting!  There is a story here! I don't understand the little figures top left and top right tho.

My eye keeps going to the heat / AC duct on the ceiling.  I try not to look there but I am distracted by shiney.  I really like her hand placement - I immediately imagined she is playing solitare and about to turn over a card.  I also really like the lite wood coloring of the table contrasting with the color of the sofa.

Ah, okay - looking at the full size attachment, I see what you mean about both Gareth's skin and the cat's fur. On the skin, you can try going into the surfaces tab, under Skin->Base->Glossy and playing with the Reflectivity and Rough settings to see if that helps. No ideas on the cat, unfortunately. Nice job on the sunglasses! I like being able to see their eyes through the glass. There are soooo many reflective surfaces in this - amusingly, I don't know if you noticed but the reflection of woman on the underside of the hood seems to create an impressionist painting of a woman wearing a black bikini! Also, fwiw, that is the most pristine engine compartment I've ever seen!

Yeah I was missing a Shadow as well, from this angle. But it just got hidden by the angle of all three lightsources. Maybe I can bring it back by an additional Light.

This was actually such a great way to get back into Daz, I had to relearn Materials and lighting from scratch after not rendering for several years. I fiddled around with the Materials for hours and in the end I took some presets anyways ^^. I can't say I'm comfy with everything yet, but at least I am not completely clueless anymore.

I'm not really happy with the composition yet, I kinda feel there's something stil missing but heck... isn't that always the case?

That's what postwork is for? Honestly, I'll admit it's something I hadn't thought about, but now that it's mentioned I'll probably have to play with it. I've attached the full-size file of that version for @tynkere - does that help with the details? Keep in mind that I'm already rendering a revision that hides that hollow stump and (I think) does a little better job of the lighting.

Right?? This is really nicely done. I'm intrigued about the game itself - is it an opening move? Is it a pivotal move? Maybe seeing a little more of the board?

Aside from that, what surfaces did you tinker with? The reflective surfaces on the "white" pieces are glass? Where is the color coming from on the white squares? Inquiring minds want to know! (Also, if you attach the image to your comment, people like me can click on it to get an undistracted view of the render!)

    surprise I'm really expressed.

Your picture has a nearly photo realistic look. The shaders works great. Especially the glass shader and the refraction draws my eyes immediately to the played figure. Too bad you haven't attached your original picture to the entry. My first reaction was, to zoom in and take a closer look to the details.

You said, that you are not pleased with the result, but I can't find something that I could do nearly as good, as you did here.

Yes, some people would say, it's a little to dark, or they would like to see more of the scene, etc. etc. , but I find it works great how we see it, because it makes us all curious and if a picture do that, than it works. :)

Hey, the environment looks great. I like how the main light lights the scene and let the background, behind the persons fading into dark. For me, it's not the missing footprints, which I don't know how to insert them, because I'm a total noob in Gimp and postwork.

It's more the outfit from our three protagonists. I know, you put a lot of work in them, but I have the feeling, they should wear fur and thick clothes.
The pose of the women arms are great, we can see, that she is alarmed and will protect the kids.

Only her feets are a little distracting (more like a model pose) ...but maybe she needs a toilet, because of the cold weather and her outfit.  (Yeah, silly joke, I know cheeky)

I would also change the position from the feets of the kids. They clipping in the ground. I think you let them there to imply they in the snow, but for me, the street looks like there is only a small amount of snow, not enough that feets can sink in, such deep.

On the other hand, there are this two persons in the corner who give the whole scene a surreal look and in that case, the whole scene and even the outfits could work. Maybe it's more a metapher we see, but I'm not really into this stuff. I like more the clear statment style.wink

Thanks both of you for your comments. Now if I'm thinking the two of you where asking about is the red spots to our left (his right) then they are lights that are part of his companions arm. In fact I gave both the main character and the newest runner the same pair of cyber-arms, I just might have used different settings for each of them, not sure about that.  I think that part of the reason that it's hard to tell is I've gof DoF in place focusing on the main character and as such the points in question are out of focus.

I was going to suggestion adjusting the bright light as it is a bit of a distraction.  After taking a 2nd look I realized it helps to draw the eye to the figures near the top of the image.

The boy's right toes look to be intersecting the ground.

    Good job.
