My cataract surgeries, improved eyesight

I had my second cataract surgery about a week ago, My left eye has a new lens which  is set at "distance" vision, and I have 20/20 eyesight! I think the left eye was 20/200 before the operation. The right eye has a new lens set at Near Vision. I go back to the eye doctor for a followup evaluation. I think the right eye will also end up with 20/20 vision. The doctor chose to have "fixed" or single vision lenses because the co-pay was $300 per eye. It would cost $2,000 out of pocket for the fancy multi-focus replacement lenses.

Right now, I use "reading glasses" to work on the computer. I have a hard time reading this post as it's being written. The letters are much larger after the message is posted.

    Hey Ron,

that's great news, and I'm glad to hear that you've come out of the operation doing well!

Rest your eyes and take good care of yourself while you're healing up. smileyheart

I'm glad to hear this. Blurry sight and funky vision (not to be confused with FunkyVision™) is a terrible thing to have to deal with.

New eyeball lens... That's cool... My wife's cousin had a corneal transplant a few years ago to correct a double vision issue. Her vision is normal now and it's been a huge relief to her... Especially the part about her no longer having to see two of me...

Don't worry about not being able to see what you are writing... I never look at what I write... Before, during or after... At least for you the letters are just bigger after you post... Whatever I write just gets dumber after I hit post.

Really... You have no idea how intellectually stimulating this post is as I'm writing it... Actually I have no idea either because I'm looking at a squirrel outside on the tree as I'm writing this... But regardless, it's amazingly coherent and full of amazing facts and wise sayings...

    • Fun fact: Before becoming prime minister in 1874, Benjamin Disraeli was an accomplished penguin wrestler and author.. In fact his first novel, Vivian Grey was about a young penguin wrestler who moved amongst London's high society while fighting crime dressed as a penguin... In fact it is rumored that the mysterious "Penguin Man" caped crime fighter who was often spotted fighting ruffians and criminals in the slums, was actually Disraeli in penguin drag.

    • Wise saying: "Face life with a heart that never fears, a temper that never fails and pants that never fall down while running."

    • Amazing Fact: More than 82% of people who have never heard of Tacocat, don't know that Tacocat spelled backwards is still Tacocat.

Well... That's it... God only knows what all that will turn into after I hit post... But trust me if you were here and not watching that squirrel like I am, you'd see how amazing that stuff was...

Anyway, I just wanted to respond and say congratulations on your new and improved eyeballs and I hope all stays well with them... I had a brain transplant a while ago and apparently they started before the new brain arrived and they had to use an octopus they had laying around as a place holder and then the insurance company said an octopus was good enough and they wouldn't  pay for the new brain and even though the octopus was a criminally insane octopus, they still refused to swap it for the new brain, disregarding the consequences of me having a criminally insane octopus as a brain... So even though it's the octopus talking now, he know what you are going through...

I really have no idea why I shared that...

Anyway, have a great day and get completely well soon!

    - Best regards from me and the octopus in my head!

Welcome to the club! I had both eyes done a year ago September and ent from 20/400 or some such ridiculous number to 20/20 right eye and 20/40 left. I went with a pair of the fixed-focus implants and just bought reading glasses for near (closer than 2+ feet - I'm typing this on the laptop without them). I also got a prescription bifocal set for use while watching tv and reading (I do both at the same time - fershluggenr commercials!). In my case, medicare and my supllemental picked up the entire tab.

    I've been wearing glasses since I was 5 . . .

Very good. I've know people that their mobility and driving was rescued by cataract surgery besides the overall comfort and safety the surgery enabled. My eyesight has improved too although I haven't had surgery. It's not back to 20/20 but that's OK it was never anything but mild far-sightness to begin with. I think it has improved because of loosing 70 lbs and eating vegetarian, especially a wide variety of vegetables now.

What hasn't changed is the print size and color choices on packaging labels seems to always increasingly choosen for prettiness, color-coordination and not clashing with the rest of the packaging rather then easy legibility for consumers that need that information.

Great news, I remember your post before the surgery. Good luck with how the right eye turns out. :)

Wonderful news! I'm glad for you, though I'm jealous, too, because my failing eyes can never be fixed (retnal shrinkage and tears). Best wishes, and happy rendering smiley yes

Whoa! I'm glad you got your eyesight back. That's awesome and really lucky considering what the doctor said.

Angelreaper1972, yes it's great that your sight was restored. I was able to see, but my world had been rather dark for at least 20 years. And I had so many problems reading the screens etc. I had walked away from DAZ Studio for several months, and got heavily interested in doing my family genealogy. But I was struggling to read the screens.

Divamakeup, I did get some sleep. I'm having a bit of trouble adjusting to Daylight Savings time. I open my eyes, and it's still dark outside. I think I should still be sleeping, but look at the clock, and realize it's later than I thought. Most of the time it's not a problem because I'm retired. But I've had many medical appointments over the past month or so. I have a clock radio, but can't figure how to set the alarm. I had some instructions somewhere, but the instructions were done in really small type.

Congrats on the new peepers.  After a year I'm still getting used to mine.  I have the same type of midfocus/farfocus fixed focus lens setup and I keep forgetting that in order to read I need to put my new glasses on instead of taking them off.  but without them and if I sit back from the computer screen a normal distance I can do quite well without glasses.  I wear sunglasses now when outside, especially in snow.  But  I don't wear glasses while in the house at all anymore.  Watching TV and navigating the house is glasses free.  I sometimes forget them when I go out to the car and have to go back to get them in order to legally drive, although I could do without them if I had to and didn't have to read unfamiliar signs too far ahead.  Better to just have my glasses on when driving. smiley  My insurance claimed to pay 80% of the cost but when I added up everything it was more like 50%.  Insurance companies, bah humbug, the devil is in the details. sad

LeatherGryphon, thanks for sharing your experience. I haven't done any calculations. There is a $300 co-pay for each eye. I haven't felt any sort of confusion between the fixed near and far settings. Sometimes I can read the screens at the default resolutions. Sometimes I can't. It's been a few weeks since the left eye was operated on. It's been a bit over a week since the right eye was fixed.

Congratulations! My Mom and one of my friends had this operation (both eyes), and they are really content with the results.

I'm 67 years old, and have been living in "Senior Citizens" apartments for 12 years. It's a liberating experience because so many people have gone through the same experiences as I have. And some of the people who haven't had cataract surgery have decided it's worth having! Right now, I feel like a Cataract Evangelist!
