Rosemill Moor Iray rendering slow?

Is the Rosemill Moor Iray scene laggy for you guys?  This scene seems to lag a lot more than others, even before adding some genesis figures.  Running a pretty good rig, so it's not that my computer is slow.  I did use the night scene mesh version, which has a lot of emissive surfaces.  But I turned off all the chandoliers, 36 surfaces there which I figure is the majority and that didn't seem to make any difference.

My interface settings should be OK...

    No one?  sad

I did more playing around what is making it slow.  I dunno.  One thing different with this scene is that I have a card dedicated for the desktop that's not enabled for Iray, even with that set the whole computer lags badly in other apps almost unusable vs other scenes I can use the computer while rendering no problem.

I thought all the mesh lights may have been slowing it down, but they aren't.  I compared the mesh lights to the point lights, render times were similar.  The scene's geometry doesn't seem that complex, I've had more complex scenes that didn't crush the computer.

Here's some render times for my two Titans, only to 40 samples.

*** Customized,  some props and spotlights added ***

Spotlights to 40, different wall textures turn off chandolier lights & tree lights
    4:15

Spotlights to 40, turn off chandolier lights & tree lights default wall textures
    4:12-4:13

Spotlights to 40, turn off chandolier lights & tree lights delete Rosemill Moor Props
    3:47

Spotlights to 40, turn off chandolier lights & tree lights delete Rosemill Moor and RM Props
    0:43

Spotlights to 40, turn off chandolier lights & tree lights delete Rosemill Moor Render Scene Only
    0:45

*** Default scene, no additional lights added - Mesh or Point lights default from scene ***

Rosemill Moor clean Iray night load, Iray night render setting
    3:59

Rosemill Moor clean Iray night load, Iray night render setting, Mesh Lights added
    3:33

Rosemill Moor clean Iray night load, Iray night render setting, Point Lights added
    3:40

  • Hmm, I'll take a look here when I get a chance and see if anything jumps out at me :)

  • While I'm here, have you checked your Draw Settings?

Thanks Jack!  Here's my draw settings.  It was at Texture Shaded, but the values don't change when I switch to Iray.

PS, I also have another computer with Studio.  4.9.4.122 and 4.10.0.107, happens with both.

  • Are these any better?  Under the 'Drawing' section.

Don't shoot me if they're not, but mine doesnt seem to lag with them as they are.

I think a little bit better posing Genesis 3 figures in the scene.

It's still rendering really slow in Iray.

    Inactive Viewport Display was ON

Do you have to restart Daz Studio for that setting to take effect?  I had to reboot, now my system is running much better.  Web browser (Chrome) is pretty zippy now.

Iray rendering seems about the same.

Rendering is probably a little slower given it’s an interior scene.. but the laggy display isn’t an issue here.

Not sure what else to suggest.. hopefully someone can chime in

Yeah, I edited the title as that was probably misleading - the interface WAS a bit laggy, but the tweak helped a lot.  No complaints there now.  smiley

The scene does render really slow - and I almost always render interior scenes, 90% of the time fully enclosed except windows and doors of course.  Typically with an interior scene and a few Genesis 3 figures after 10 minutes I'd have 250-300 iterations.  After 14 minutes, only 52.  I rendered the bare unmodified scene which was also really slow - 4-ish minutes and only 40 iterations.  Thanks again for taking a look!

Solved the mystery with the laggy display fix.  I often change ports as I do some gaming mixed in.  For gaming, I can hot unplug from the 1060 and into a Titan and SLI gaming works fine.  But hot plugging from a Titan to the 1060 makes no difference while rendering, the desktop is still lagged like it's plugged into a rendering card still.  I need to reboot to get that benefit.

Something is odd with the scene.  My second computer with a i7 6700K lags terribly rendering the scene.  It took about 30 seconds to switch between tasks.

I noticed something funky I've never seen before.  On some of the walls, I saw things marked as not visible (later noticed marked visible in render).  Scene doesn't look right if you make them visible.  But it renders correctly.  Deleting them scene definitely doesn't look right.  For example Rmill_Moor_Bk_Wall_Mr
