Can someone help me find a chariot?

Well, poo!  You blew my chance for kidding around.  If you had not been specific in your request, going so far as to present examples, I would have shared an image of the tread driven ground vehicle from "Lost in Space".  (It was called the "Chariot".)

    Sincerely,

    Bill

Redfern!!!! How ya been!??? Good to see you again! smiley

Meh, doing well enough.  I don't post as often (not that I did that much anyway), lurking mostly until I read a "straight line" that tempts me to reply with a wise-a$$ "zinger".

    Sincerely,

    Bill

Well, I am so sorry to have ruined all you're fun!!! laugh It is good to see you, though!

  • Silent Winter?

I gave you feedback on page one but now we are on page 2 so I don't know if you saw it. smiley

    Silent Winter?

I gave you feedback on page one but now we are on page 2 so I don't know if you saw it. smiley

It says it downloaded fine - was that the feedback?   The big question is - did it install okay?  (ie can you load the chariot and move the parts?)

Edit: Oh, just saw the info in the post above that one, hang-on

    Okay - here's 2.0

Take a good look and let me know if there are any embellishments you want to add (or other things that need changing, like the length of the harness pole - though that may need to wait until you try to hitch it up to an animal in your scene).  Edit - is the height okay?  That's an easy fix if you want it lower at the top.

I used the Daz Iron shader for the harness and axle, then a basic wood I got from filter forge for the rest, with no regard for the seams.  It looks a little too clean for a viking chariot but you said you'd do the textures yourself so...

The uv map is a little chaotic at the moment - once you get the final version you can bug me to alter seams, etc, according to how you want to work with it (but bear in mind seams in certain places or not causes more or less stretching).

I Love the wheels now! They are perfect. smiley There are a few things I noticed that might be useful to you... I hope I'm not sounding too demanding. surprise

I have included a pic to show what I'm trying to say... but, who knows if I will make any sense at all!! LOL

OK... Where I have "arrows" want to draw attention to the "frame" of the cart. In the pics the frame is sort of "pipelike"? For lack of a better word?

Secondly... Yeah, the harness will need room for horses to fit in there in front of the cart. I will be using the old Millenium Horse.

And Lastly, The height of the "body"  (which I have circled, side by side) has more space... and is sort of just a "panel" under the frame.

Am I being a pain in the butt yet?? (Please, don't hate me)

    I hope not!!!

I do LOVE the wheels, though!! heartheartheart

okay - pipelike frame should be doable.  I'll import the old horse to size it (but that'll make the harness higher than the cart I think.  Might need to be longer too.  Again, easy enough.  More body at the bottom - also shouldn't be a problem.

Don't worry about being demanding - this is also a learning experience for me so knowing what details to pay attention to is good.  Anything else you want changing?  I'm heading out this afternoon with my wife for a prenatal checkup (baby should be here already but it's acting like it's older brother and staying put where it's comfy and warm) - but I can work on it some more later/tomorrow.

The thing youre calling "harness" doesn't sit "over" the animal. It sits near the ground, kinda behind the animal and the actual harness thing (worn by the animal) is attatched to reigns that are tied to it. Does this help?

It would help if I knew what I was talking about laugh

Okay - so it only needs to go behind the animal?  I'll add rings to attach reins/proper harness - Do you still want it to tilt up and down like in the 2.0 version or attach firmly to the base like in the pic on p.1?

Follow-up Q about the piping (which I know how to do - yay):  It also pipes around the holes (inside) correct?  Are those pipes free-floating (attached only to the panel thing) or attached also to the main piping (i.e. at the front top)?  A little hard to see in the pic.

Follow-up Q about the panelling: Do you want it to be double-poly thick?  So you can have a different map on the inside v. the outside.  Or do you want it to be single-poly thick, so whatever's on the front is also on the back?

Got a fair bit on tomorrow but I'll see if I can get this done.

  • If you can try to get it close to the 1st pic (with the goats) that would be wonderful!

The "piping should be attatched, yes.smiley And double poly would be great on the body, if possible, but not essential.

    And THANK YOU Again!!

Btw... How's the wife and baby doing?

Doing fine, thanks.  We ended up going to the hospital in the middle of the night (baby was moving a lot and wifey was worried) but nothing to report.  Feeling a bit sleepy today but I should manage to get something done.

Once we got back from the hospital my brain wanted to model in my sleep LOL.  It suggested calling the not-harness a 'hitch', and the body of the carriage 'panels'.

So I'm going with 'frame' for the piping, 'hitch' for the...er...hitch, and 'panels' for the body (wheels can stay as 'wheels' ;) ).  I mention this as I don't want you getting confused later when I change all the materials / parts names ;)

Glad to hear things are good with mom and baby!

I laughed that you were dreaming modeling!!! LOL Also, that we now have actual names for the parts we were not naming! LOLOLOL!!

Thank you. Not only for being willing to do this for me, but also for the adventure! wink

It's cool - I'm learning as I go - plonking down vertices in a rough shape, converting them to a curve, turning curve into pipe then back to a mesh - it's looking good too :)

I've mostly done box-modelling before so this is a good combination of different techniques.

Another progress report - can you let me know which of the holes (left/small or right/big) you prefer?  (I'm planning to smooth out the kinks a little so don't worry about those).

I haven't  redone the hitch yet so ignore that (and the way I went nuts with the shaders :p )

On the hitch subject - do you want a central t-shape like in the later pic?  And I asked earlier but: moveable like in the demo, or fixed to the undercarriage like in the later pics?

Here is the chariot from adh3d's Warrior Pharaoh pack over on that other site. I reduced the height of the basket by 70% and set the opacity of all the unnecessary stuff to 0%. I wouldn' be surprised if all the other stuff like harness etc. couldn't be resized to fit your needs. Assuming you can find the goats for it.

For some reason, the attached file will not up load but the final render is almost exactly like the one you posted in your answer to rgrinly.

WOW!!! That is really looking awesome! OMG! I love it so much!

I like the one on the right!!!! The one with the larger holes. And to be honest... I kinda LIKE the kinks. I think it looks more like it's been "used" and made by ancient people to me or something. I like it. smiley

And on the hitch -- I wasn't sure what you were asking last time and I'm not sure now! LOL But the hitch should probably run under the carriage  and be a bit "thicker" to support the size/weight of THIS carriage... Get what I mean? Like in this pic:

But everything looks amazing so far! Great job! smiley I really can't wait! This is so nice of you!!! Thank you so much!!!

There is actually.  It needs you to flag the post and ask for it to be moved out of sight.

Gotcha - should be able to get this done today, but no promises - depends on baby's schedule (still waiting) ;)

  • Norse Chariot 3.5 from a bunch of angles (again ignore the surface choices, I'm just playing).

Not entirely sure on the hitch - is it the right shape/height/length?

Okay - I'll upload it here once I've tidied up the uv-map.  Might be worth having 2 maps, otherwise you'll lose detail.  But it depends on how close you'll want it to be.

I'll give it a look-see, then upload it.  If you don't like the uv-map(s), feel free to ask for revisions :)  (and if you notice any issues when using it, same).

Might eventually texture it myself, then upload it to Sharecg as a general freebie if others might be interested in it.  When I've got the time - wife is due to be booked into the hospital  (for real this time) today and they say they'll probably induce her tomorrow if baby doesn't come by then.

  • Okay - Here's Norse Chariot 3.6

No textures included as previously mentioned.  When it loads up, it's at DS default 3DL shader settings.  Convert as needed.

In OpenGL preview, there are a couple of polys on the left side that look wrong (weird as I mirror modelled it so it should be the same on both sides).  But when textured and rendered it can't really be seen.  Try it out and let me know if it's a problem.

Rigged so the wheels roll, other parameters hidden.

Also attached a couple of uv-guides - let me know what you think.
