1070 Card is Dying?

Hi everyone,

I'm sorry of this is long, but Windows fatal error during a render scared the p*ss out of me.  Don't know if DS issue with SubD settings too high or my card might be going out. : (

Strix ROG 1070 (8GB with probably 7.5 available)

Started a render with SubD at 2 on three different actors.

Screen went black for 1 second.  Came back on @ 1080 rather than 4k

MsgBox: "Windows has encountered fatal error at (something)"  Windows rebooted before I could get a SS.  Reboot still at 1080.

Let machine cool down & booted up.  Still at 1080.  NvCPL.exe "No NVidia device installed."  GPU-Z: "NVidia 1070 at 0 Mhz"

Device Manager: "Error: Windows has disabled this device.  Further installation needed.  Search Web or browse to install."

Search web & it installed same driver I'd been using.  Huh?

Long & short, searched web for card diagnostics, but not much out there.  "6 signs your card is dying" don't seem to apply.  (not getting any lag or weird display errors, no dust bunnies inside case, games & streaming work OK, etc.)

Does this happen often?  Geometry or something just too much for it?

Leery about doing any more renders until I find out cause.

Render size 2922 x 2191 ; approx file size 6981 MB

sys info if helps

Win-10 | DS 4.10
i-7 (6700k) on g3 mobo | bios @ minimum of 4.16 GHz
Strix ROG 1070 | settings = no overclock besides factory preset. Drivers are current.

If your display is fine and it isn't wonking out while playing a game or messing around in Daz, then I'd say your card is still ok. It's probably something with the drivers. I would uninstall the current drivers, maybe even reseat the card if you are comfortable getting inside your pc, then reinstall the latest drivers.

If you have more than one PCIe 16x slot I would try moving the card.

Thanks for replies.  That really had me freaked out because my only backup is a 970 & older 1600 x 1200 monitor.

Cleaned everything inside case & hadn’t thought about moving it to another slot.  Was really close to wifi card, so I moved 1070 more towards air-flow in middle.

    Did small 800 x 600 render & OK.

So... Don't mess with SubD settings on more than one actor?

    PS:
Quick question - just curious.  When worried 1070 might be going out, looked at 'professional' Quadro series & sticker shock!  surprise

What is the advantage of these?  More money for less VRAM doesn’t make sense.   These are meant for research institutions, AI, complex weather patterns & such?  I just don't see the benefit-- obviously there must be one or nVidia wouldn't make them.

  • Memory is not the selling point for those. Bullet proof and stability are for the Quadros. They are designed for industrial use, not gaming. They are often found in high end workstations for their stability. When money and business is involved, you don't take chances.

Stability eh?  That might be the magic word after being scared so badly!

Too bad Quadros are so cost prohibitive.

For future planning, is there a series that emphasizes 'stability' over say, framerate?

Much rather have a stable card than one that's might be advertised as lightning fast.  : )
