Parenting a Character?

I have a third party Scene and Poses that I am trying to use. I have the Scene opened and have added my Character to the scene. The poses all have a Scene element called "cylinder" that they are suppose to be associated with.Basically all of the poses have the Character touching the cylinder in one way or another.

There is a note that came with the poses that says:

"Parent the Genesis character under the cylinder (drag the character onto the pole in the Environment tab) for instant posing"

I was assuming that by Environment Tab that they mean the Environment Pane, but the Environment pane is completely empty.

I tried changing the Characters parent in the Scene tab to be the "cylinder", but that just causes my Characters shape to become distored. 

Can someone explain how to make this work?

Scene would be the right place, but beyond that I'm not sure what they mean. Hierarchical poses need a figure, not a prop, as the parent.
