DAZ 4.10 and Windows 10 is creating an Icon file for each JPG that I save to my Daz renders folder

I recently re-installed Windows 10 on my system and re-installed Daz 4.10, upgrading from Daz 4.8. Whenever I save a Render file as a JPEG to my selected destination folder, Windows 10 creates an small Icon file to accompany the JPEG. The JPEG is, say, 3000x3000 pixels, and the tiny Icon file is, of course, like 100x100.

I select all the Icon files and delete them to the Recycle Bin, and empty that. But when I go back and open the Render Folder again, Windows 10 has created ALL the Icon files again!

I tried just dragging a couple random JPEGs into the same folder, and Windows is NOT creating a duplicate Icon. So it's got to be something to do with DAZ?

I know this is a likely more of a Windows issue than a DAZ issue, but if anyone knows how to get Windows to stop creating this unwanted Icon file it would be appreciated. I tried posting in some Microsoft forums but didn't get any response.

That is a Daz issue. People usually just use other folder for renders rather than the default one. Changing that will solve your problem.

  • Thanks, Rafmer. I do save all my renders to a completely different path, and I still have the same problem! In fact, the random JPEGs that I drug into that folder a couple hours ago now have Icon files created. UGH!

I am looking at other folders on both my Primary SSD and my secondary internal hard drive and any JPEGs there do not have Icon files created by Windows 10. I thought maybe it was something to do with the Folder Properties (Optimize for Photos or Optimize for General Files) and that doesn't make any difference.

Hoping someone has an idea. The reason I don't want the Icon files is that when I sort by name and then scroll through my renders with a photo viewer, I have to see Big File 1 then little file 1...Big File 2 then little file 2. Annoying!

IIRC, I fixed this by opening the Render Library pane and doing something - lol. The problem is, I can't remember exactly what I did. But it is fixable.

  • This is what DS is meant to do - for any folder set as a Redner Library it will generate thumbnail images for the Render Library pane. If you don't want this to happen don't use the Render Library for saving - if you click the icon to the left of the library picker at the bottom of an open render window you can choose to use a folder isntead, then set the path to a location outside yoru render library and save (with no thumbnail). DS will remember this choice in future. You can point the Render Library Manager to dummy folder that won't be used for images by selecting it from the render Library pane's option menu.

Just to add that these thumbnails that DAZ Studio creates are not the same as those that Windows creates. The thumbnails that DAZ Studio creates are individual image files in .png format. The thumnails that Windows creates when a folder is set to thumbnail or icon view are icon files in .jpg format that are stored within a database file (thumbs.db) for display in Windows Explorer/My Computer.

  • Thanks, everyone. I re-directed my renders per Rafmer and Richard, and the problem is solved.
