dForce looks like a useful new tool that will make updating to 4.10 worth it. However, I'd like to know exact procedure. Currently using Daz 4.8 because I don't want to use Daz Connect and I don't want it to shuffle my files around. To my understanding, you solve the latter by putting things on an external hard drive (which I'm mostly planning to do anyway). How do you make sure Daz 4.10 never activates Connect? Been meaning to ask for a while but I've been swamped at work.

The easiest way to avoid any issues with Daz Connect is to tell it to not ask about logging in when you install it. And if you want to keep your current version of DS, I would recommend installing the 4.10 beta, which will install in a different default folder; just make sure you point it to the same places you store your content if you don't use the default location.
Doesn't using the beta require DIM nowadays? I'd gladly take that option if there's an option to manual download.
Yes, beta installs have to go via DIM. Installing 4.9 or 4.10 won't move your content, remove your categorisations (though it's wise to back them up), or force you to use Connect to install.
Not sure why you feel you need to move your content to an external drive just because you want to avoid DAZ Connect.
4.10 doesn't force you to anything you don't want to, and all earlier forms of installation are the same (ie using DIM or via manual download).
Huh. I thought it had been officially stated that 4.9+ would adjust locations and metadata upon the first install. I'm guessing that's just a Connect thing? There was a lot of conflicting info when 4.9 was first released and I was content to not fool with it at all since I'm a 3Delight user anyway.
As far as I know you only need to use Daz Connect for DRM encrypted content. When I start Studio I get a box asking if I want to connect to my account or work offline, I usualy choose offline. If you don't give it your DAZ password then I suppose it can't connect at all.
4.9 does convert the database to a new format, but without destroying the old fields (which are still used by DIM). Changes made to categories and so in in 4.9+ won't be read by 4.8, but I think that's the onyl difference. Well, as long as you are using PostgreSQL - if you held on to Valentina then you would need to convert to PostgreSQL first.
