Content Library Tutorial?

Can someone point me to a tutorial about rearranging and changing the structure of the content library? I would like to consolidate, reduce folder redundancies, and categorize items in a way that makes sense to me (see attached).

The easiest way I know of is to right-click on a folder and choose "Create Category From > This Folder and Subfolders". The go to the Categories section and you can rearrange the folders and files however you like. Adamr001 has a template for the structure he uses.

I can create new categories but they do nothing...the products do not link to them. I've tried several times. The only products that are in categories are built in products that are in the default categories. I cannot add any products to existing or new categories. Am using DS v. 4.5.1.56

Do you mean the icons don't show up in the categories, or that they don't work when you click on them?

    Icons don't show up.

If you pick one icon, right-click and choose Categorize, does that get it into the category?

I'm guessing the PO means that categorizing them, they don't show up in Smart Content, because they would certainly show up in Categories. All of my stuff is in there, whether metadata'ed or not.

No. No matter where I try to categorize it to, a default one or one I create. The icon does not show up. Take for example GIS_Nova folder and the !Preload option. If I right click that option and try to categorize it under Default - Sets - Architecture - Interiors, the only thing that is there is the !Preload for the Alchemy Chasm. If I try it for a new category I create, the same thing happens - nothing.

After you have categorized, where are you looking for the icon? Alchemy Chasm shows under Architecture Interiors in the Smart Content tab by default after installing Genesis Starter Essentials, so I really think that is where you must be looking. If you look under Categories in your content library, I'd be willing to bet GIS_Nova is right where you categorized it. The reason it's not showing in Smart Content is probably because it lacks metadata.

I don't think you're reading what I'm typing. If I create my own user folder as a direct sub folder under Categories, such as "environment" which appears as a grey folder with a "U" on it (presumably meaning "user") it still shows nothing.

Okay I got it now! I had to select option "Reset Database" under "Content Database Maintenance". All the built in content is gone from the Categories but at least I can add things now.

Sounds like the database was corrupted. I recommend that you periodically do "Content DB Maintenance > Export User Data" so that if it happens again, you can restore your custom categories. The beta version, BTW, has an updated database client, which is less likely to have these problems.

Okay it looks like it isn't working again. I created a few categories and placed items in there and now I can no longer add more. This must be a bug. Maybe I should report it.

Update: attempted to solve problem by installing Pro Beta 4.6.0.15. Would not uninstall old version - gave error message. Reported as bug. My virus protector "should" not be preventing the operation as I have allowed access. No guarantees though. Going to bed.

Okay I've successfully upgraded to 4.6.0.15. I'll try the category creation now. It looks like it is working so far. The layout is slightly different. It defaults to tree view when creating categories and there is no check boxes. I think this is better; it seems more useful and friendly.

A little tip about databases, which is what the "thick as a brick" content system and the categories are, and that is they start to corrupt from the second you start using them, your actions of adding new data and moving data around causes that corruption, so it's only a matter time before it becomes unusable, and saving a backup wont really help as these systems have a bad habit of saving the corruption in there too.

That's a somewhat cynical view of databases, isn't it? I've used databases, esp SQL, for years without any corruption at all. I suspect all my friends and colleagues who are DBAs could say the same.

Simply a untrue statement. You better hope the Database holding all your medical records does not have that point of view the first time you really need it.
